Information about the O2

to give some idea of the size of the complex, here's a few facts taken from the official website:

* The O2 has an overall diameter of 365 metres, an internal diameter of 320 metres, a circumference of a kilometre and is 50 metres high at its central point
* The twelve steel masts are 100 metres high
* If you turned The O2 upside down, ir would take Niagara Falls 15 minutes to fill it
* Alternatively, you could fill it with 3.8 billion pints of beer or the contents of 1100 olympic-sized swimming pools
* The volume of The O2 is equal to thirteen Albert Halls ten St Paul’s Cathedrals or two old Wembley Stadiums
* 18,000 double-decker buses could fit into The O2
* The O2 is as high as Nelson’s Column
* The Eiffel Tower could fit inside The O2 lying on its side
* 12 football pitches or 72 tennis courts could fit in The O2
* Entertainment Avenue is the same length & breadth as New Bond Street

And from memory I think it was a big headache for years financially as they built it for the millenium but it did always loose money so may be now there will be tons of concerts there and they will get it to work in a great way I hope. But how about the acoustics? Domes are dangerous vs. acoustics. The Commerzbank Arena in Franfurt is like a dome...

Bjornulf, I'm in there for Prince on the 10th of this month, so I'll report in on the subject of acoustics after the show.

This is all very well, but does it refer to the Dome, or the actual concert venue?

My understanding is that the O2 is a newly built venue, which is actually inside the Dome, along with the Indigo, a movie theatre and all the inevitable restaurants and bars. The Dome tself is, to put it bluntly, a high-tech tent!

BV, you're absolutely right, the Dome was a huge PR disaster, like building Disneyland and only running it for a year. If it had been built for the long haul, it would have been a different prospect...like the London Eye which was derided when first built.

The Stones gig will be my first at the venue, so I have no personal experience to draw on, but all the indications are the acoustically it's the best venue of it's size in the UK, possibly even in Europe.

All the crazy facts refer to the dome. As you said, the O2 arena itself is inside the dome.

The O2 is the name of the venue (that used to be known as the Millenium Dome), and the O2 Arena is just one part of the venue.

No, it won't fit inside the arena with the stage at the end of the floor as it shows in the seating chart. I am sure they will use the ABB arena stage. Makes sense.
