Really bad covers and the culprits...
Posted by: DoughboyUK ()

just reading MR MILLERS post about songs that will never be covered made me think of this topic.... "the worst cover versions" that destroyed the song...
dont know if this has been a topic b4...

my nomination would be The Pet Shop Boys version of "Always on my mind"

that was a sickener and embarassing to an Elvis fan...

whats yours?

not to mention Willie fans.

now Ryan Adams' version is a completely different matter....
mouth-wateringly wonderful.

The Rolling Stones' cover of

Harlem Shuffle (original by Bob & Earl).

Criminal!

I think that´s a great cover. It´s so totally different from the original. The only song I like with Pet Shop Boys.
Rush did a cover album a couple of years ago that I think is catastrophe. A prime example of great musicians who can´t play anything but their own songs.

Sorting through my CDs, the Keepers and the Trash, and found Michael Buble's first album (someone MUST have given it to me...) and was shocked to see Sway on the track listing. Morbid curiosity - had to listen to see just how bad it was. Relieved to hear it was not the same "Sway" or would have required medication.

Dodged a bullet here - who else should never cover Stones songs? (Think we covered Celine Dion and Bill Shatner sufficiently in earlier threads - appalled that these are all Canadian...)

Nominations? Or hoots of scorn and derision if already recorded? Preferably from another country...

I think Devo's cover of Satisfaction is about as rotten as it gets.

not to mention Willie fans.
not to mention Brenda Lee fans, the first artist to record that song.

Van Halen - You Really Got Me
Overtly bombastic, and that horrible "solo" before...

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Completely soulless "hard rock" version.

And a special mention to Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes. Sounded almost like the original except instead of the rocking part there were some weird noises. Awful.

Van Halen solo is called "Eruption".

Ugly Kid Joe - Cat's In The Cradle - Love the original but I didn't need a hard rock version.

Sam Cooke - Tennessee Waltz - I LOVE Sam Cooke but this one I skip every time. I think I've heard the original way to many times to ever understand a version that isn't a "waltz".

Peace,
Mr DJA

And I think the Stones Harlem Shuffle is brilliant, especially Bill's bass. It's the last cover they made their own.

Devo's Satisfaction is a great interpretation. It was ballsy to do it that way.
