<I listened to the 2 "Exile on Main Street" LPs, and WOW, the live version of "All down the line" is sooooo much better than the studio version>

That's very interesting! Why?

can someone please tell me who the hell are those weird guys on stage

Re: Brno update

ah i already see,

the stage is alot higher it seems, and the security stand in the wrong place ?? They should stand lower.

Because the sound of this song live just is "fuller", more powerful, somehow sexier - you should hear it by yourself, it is very hard to explain this only theoretically

My god the distance between the crowd and stage is getting BIGGER and BIGGER!

Why do they do that? It`s really sad..

Interesting you ask that, but I would have to agree with Gerda about that statement he made, because EVERY single time I've seen the Stones perform ADTL, they have absolutely surpassed themselves. I don't know, perhaps the song is just one of those that they find it unfailingly easy to get that mean aggressive edge on, and they do it reliably every time they play it. For me, and I couldn't "list" the occasions on which I've seen them do this song (at least not without going through all the setlists), this is THE one song that has always stuck out as being the one that they're absolutely smoking on. In that respect, live versions I've heard have been every bit as wonderful if not better; that is more raw and exciting (as live stuff often is) as the Exile version.

I've seen ADTL live twice (Oslo 1995 and Bergen 2006). Both smokin' versions. But to me, the studio recording is close to perfection (even with the out of tune-guitar, or maybe because of smiling smiley ). For me it's hard to compare, but it's a fantastic live song, no doubt about it.

OK, lets just say studio and live versions have to be somehow different - hard to compare a song recorded in a studio in 1971 to the song performed live in 2007. But I am glad they play it in the impressive way they play it now - which is just making me go wild

Oh come on!
The Stones has always been better on stage than in studio. They're musicians, not studio technicians!

Still I like Keith on that one most: (pic number 6)

It's funny getting bashed for a different view, but perhaps I can get more clear when I write down the whole story from my point of view.

The crowd was a sedated group of a middle-aged crowd with the occasional young face. A big difference to the crowds in Belgrade, Bucharest and Budapest. Yes, the weather was cool and so were the fans. I'm happy and relieved that not everyone was bothered by that. Perhaps some actually enjoy being in a surrounding that reminds me more of a group of people watching the Stones on TV? I guess you were not bothered by anyone jumping around or singing along the lyrics, I assume that this is some how some people prefer to watch a concert.

I started the concert of from the first row on the tribune to the right, but moved to the FOS area with my girfriend and brother after SMU. There was a couple of young children with their great-great parents sitting behind us and I didn't want them to have an unpleasant evening because some tall guys were standing and jumping in front of them. I was surprised by how early the Stones started - the reason was of course that they didn't stay in Brno, but arrived by plane before the show and left to Warsaw right after. By the time the Stones came on stage the people were just standing/sitting around, no one really started cheering or clapping, people were just waiting. When the lights went off and the intro started on the screen I saw some smiles around, people were clapping, but nothing compared to my previous experiences.

Pls don't serve random crowd shots of the first rows, no matter how lame the crowd, the sheer excitement of being so close to the Stones is so overwhelming that even a the Brno crowd could not resist cheering.

Security was incredibly careless - we weren't even asked for tickets when we entered the venue, no one bothered to even check a bag or anything. Also no one cared that we jumped the barriers to the FOS area after SMU It was not very crowded, plenty of space between people that were moving around, chatting (which was comparably easy as neither the crowd nor the Stones were very loud) and looking for better spots throughout the show. We found a spot not too far away from the front (FOS was perhaps half size from normal) and tried to enjoy the show from there. Looking around us, while we were dancing and singing, we only saw slightly bored looking people, typing sms on their phones or chatting a bit. Politely clapping at the end and looking amused at Mick's attempts to speak Czech. As much as I loved to see the joy in the eyes of the fans in my previous shows, it hurt me to see the bored expression on faces of the crowd in Brno.

I spoke to many people after the show, we had to wait for our train back to Vienna at 4:22 in the morning, and the ragged train station was occupied by 2 homeless and around 50+ Stones fans. Everyone was just shocked how the crowd could be so lame and for many first timers (including another brother's girlfriend) their impression of the Stones was not very good. And I'm so sorry about that, I was the one telling her how everyone is singing along and dancing, etc... People also mentioned things like "Funny how it seems that Keith is often not playing the guitar". Unfortunately, that is not only how it seems to be, it is the truth.

And having the comparison of how Mick interacted with the crowd on previous shows everyone will agree that he shifted down a gear or two in Brno.

To continue where I stopped before - the songs after Start Me Up were good, if perhaps a bit shaky, but nothing to worry about winking smiley ONNYA again, if not my favourite song live, was great to hear instead of Rough Justice (sorry, was so surprised, I texted Gazza they played RJ), Ronnie was turned up quite a lot, which was great for the song. Love Is Strong was THE surprise, with a fantastic performance on harp from Mick and great guitar work from Ronnie and partly Keith. I'm not going to post a song-by-song review now, as you can listen to the bootleg (many thanks silkcut - that was mighty fast!). In my opinion it was not a special gig, Keith does play less and less - mostly you see him moving his left hand up and down the fret, undecided what he should play and finally emerging out of his confused state with a lick. No, I'm not bashing Keith - but if this is what you call playing great, than I have to disagree. I believe we all have different levels of what we call great guitar playing, but Keith has crossed a line for me on this tour.

Last but not least: was great meeting up with Kent, Sohoe, Baboon Bro & kids before the show! I hope it was enjoyable for you!

Thanks for reading & and again, I'm glad if you enjoyed the show more than I did.

i dont agree the stones are better live than in the studio.

they have so many great studio recordings that they could never do live.

hi lorenz,

sorry to hear you did not enjoy the whole thing. the keith thing: what do you expect? him playing like it was 1975? after reading the forum i was expecting a weak old man barely able to hold the guitar and playing the occassional odd tone. and i was happy to see a fXYBAing good concert, they nailed it, man. he is not playing through in every song, but thats how their music is build.

but actually, one cannot actually discuss this. it is more a philosphical question. same show, different perception. a lot to do with expectations also.

cheers,

alex

hey, just found this on youtube if anybody cares (maybe not :-)
the stones crew doing brno soundcheck - "30 days in the hole"

what i was really looking for though is....Love is Strong (by the actual stones) !

Anyone can make a great studio recording, wee bobby. A lot of people have...
But how many can work a crowd like the Stones? Over and over again?
That's where the true rocker or true musician or whatever you like to call these guys stands out!!!

Cool that you liked it, Alex. I've been at concerts that I adored and others said it was horrible.
You know, I can live with Keith playing as he does if at least I can enjoy the show with a great crowd. But in Brno a major factor why I didn't like it was that everyone was really silent and not into the show.

IMO, in many cases they 're better live. Midnight Rambler, Under My Thumb (i don't only mean 1981/82 version), Out Of Control and many others...

Glad to see, here, so many people being very satisfied with Brno concert. Unfortunetely, Budapest was my last gig this summer. Too busy during this @#$%& summer, damn me... As Gazza says, God knows what will happen after August, 26, but i still hope that Budapest (BTW, i liked so much the concert) was my last 2007 Stones concert, not my last Stones gig generally...

Hey, lucky bastards, at the next concerts drink some more beers, for me!

PS: Lorenz, which exactly place(s) will you visit in Greece in August? Island(s), i guess...

I agree it has a lot to do with your personal mood, expectations, situations and people standing next to you etc. And as there are so many fators involved, and I am glad we all have individual memories of a concert, nobody should get "bashed" for any critical observations or harsh criticism - nor should people who think what they saw was wonderful be regarded uncritical, superficial or fanatic!

Í agree with you, Gerda. For example I completely loved the Budapest show (despite screw-ups) and I know that for example Susanne (Babylon) didn't enjoy it at all.

sorry to hear about the crowd, lorenz. i must say that i was one of the only people dancing for most of the show in my front rail section in budapest (ronnie's side, down near where the small screen was - i think you guys were closer to the catwalk).
