The whole triptych called "Two Virgins","Life With The Lions" and "The Wedding Album" by John Lennon and "Electronic Sound" by George Harrison

Stones songs are actually pretty difficult to cover.

Shelby Lynne did a cover of "Mother"and still performs it live. Her father shot and killed her mother and then himself when she was 17 so the song has a particular resonance for her.

(and what is the point of this thread exactly?)

I don't think the point is to talk about what HAS been covered, I think he's asking about songs that SHOULDN'T be covered. Some songs are universal, but the end of God is just for John. I can't listen to the end of that without wanting to cry my eyes out.

It seems the universal theme of uncoverable songs are those that are too personal with an artist. For that I would say the the anything but Squeeze Box off Who By Numbers, or most of Townshends solo stuff is uncoverable because it has such a personal feeling to it. Someone mentioned Roger Waters, and I think Id have to agree, anything off the Final Cut seems very personal. But i think why people cover these songs that we have said are uncoverable is because there is a certain resonance to it. People can associate to certain songs, and thusly cover them. So as far as lyrics go, i dont think there is an uncoverable song. However, music wise on the other hand...

Gimme Shelter----and that includes the Stones! Leave it alone as it cannot be improved.

I'm with you that the Stones did the best version but there are some good covers out there

Thanx!
I´m always happy to have some people on the board who really are into music and not just nerds. Don´t worry, I sometimes feel like one of them too!

Cheers

Video killed the radio star- The Buggles

But the real question is: Why the hell would anyone want to cover that anyway?

Someone named Jerry Hadley died the other day. His obituary describes him as a “crossover tenor” and says he was “featured vocalist in the RCA recording Symphonic Music of the Rolling Stones, specifically singing Sympathy for the Devil in operatic voice. The disc was one of the label’s biggest failures.”

I’ve never heard of Hadley nor have I heard of this RCA recording (can’t quite imagine what SFTD would sound like sung in operatic voice). Has anyone ever heard of it?

Yes, it was released in 1994. Mick sings "Angie" on it (and Marianne Faithfull sings "Ruby Tuesday").

I have to disagree with you about Captain Beefheart.

Listen to Grown So Ugly as covered by The Black Keys. It makes Captain Beefheart sound like a bunch of retards playing the spoons and washboard.

After hearing the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain cover Smells like Teen Spirit (and it worked, too!) I'm not sure that anything is impossible any more.
