OT: Uncoverable Songs
Posted by: WMiller ()

After listening to John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band a couple of weeks ago it struck me that God is truly "uncoverable".

Can anybody think of other songs that are so personal that it wouldn't make sense for anybody else to cover them? I can't think of one that tops this.

BTW, it's a perfect listen for a drizzly day in Boston. How's the weather where you are today?

Lou Reed actually did cover "Mother," at a tribute concert in the late 90s, I believe.

I would have said Trent Reznor's 'Hurt' beforehand but Johnny Cash took it to a whole new level.

Most of Scott Walker's stuff from 'Tilt' and 'The Drift' is just too depressingly personal albeit brilliant. Similar tale with a lot of Roger Water's solo output.

"I'll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon."

I'd say most of Frank Zappa's and Captain Beefheart's output is uncoverable

There's a couple of tribute albums of various artists covering Beefheart.

There's at least one more. Check out some of the folks who have covered Beefheart here:

One might think so, however...

A few years ago, I went to one of those Beatlefests gatherings at a Meadowlands hotel. I took my son, then six years old. It was fun. They had a battle of the bands one night. Each act was allowed one Beatles song or solo-Beatles song.

To my surprise, some guy did "Mother"... complete with painful wailing near the song's end.

I asked this question of my teenage son and he replied Dragonforce because nobody can play guitar like those dudes. I told him that he's got a lot to learn.
