I wouldn't say I prefer one or the other as I love them all, but for the most part, I've always been partial to the lineup the Stones had in '72 and during the '73 Winter tour. I prefer Nicky Hopkins over Billy Preston. I think they sounded more raw and energetic with that particular line up. Love the Brussels recordings and love the '73 European tour, but my favorite lineup has Hopkins and Keys and Price.

Nobody ever said that any footage from Brussels is in the BBC archives but reportedly one of the Wembley Empire Pool shows was filmed by the BBC, either full-length or a very extensive part of it.
Waht material did they film on back in 1973? Film or magnetic tape? Could it have been erased meanwhile or are the archives complete?

Re Brussels, if the Wembley 73 shows or Welcome To New York or Philly Special or some others would have the sound quality of Brussels, we probably would be praising these others...

And I prefer Midnight Rambler from WTNY or the soundboard from Wembley 73 over the Brussels version (which is a bit too fast).

I like the Hampton 1981 show...that version of JJFlash will never be topped.
Brussels is a great performance but mostly is great great sound. I liked Leeds..

Brussels is hard to beat, no doubt about it. Get Your Leeds... is good and nice but I miss some of the edge that you find at Brussels.

Nothing from Mathijs in this thread? In fact he was building a complete website around this show.

Audience tapes: only the first show...Have the other bad sounding tracks from the second as listed in my post with the Nico info.

Thanks,

In a word - yes,

I think the version of Midnight Rambler on that recording is the greatest performance of any song that they've ever done (well, that I've heard anyway). Even allowing for the fact that unlike most recordings its in brilliant quality and its natural to lean towards that as opposed to an audience recording. THAT middle section where Mick whips the crowd up gives ME shivers every time. Every band member is at their absolute best on this one.

I like Leeds too. That version of "Satisfaction" is very interesting - more like Otis's version.

Er yes they did, look back at Melillo's first comment on page 1.

"Waht material did they film on back in 1973? Film or magnetic tape? Could it have been erased meanwhile or are the archives complete? - "

The archives are far from complete, in fact, up until about 1975 they are pretty threadbare where music is concerned, so much was erased. They would have almost certainly used film back in '73 so it couldn't have been wiped as such but may have been ditched or stolen but there is no computer entry for it or anything to suggest it was filmed. Some confusion may spring from the OGWT from '74 which featured Streetfighting Man live from Hamburg (I think, off the top of my head) but this has sometimes been circulated as Wembley footage.

If its the same clip that was shown on the 1973 OGWT edition that was preceded by an interview with Billy Preston, its from Frankfurt (a clip of this song was also show in a 1985 Whistle Test special on Jagger's first solo album)

No, this is not Brussels, this is Rotterdam. Brussels is French speaking.

There's about 15 minutes of video footage from the French documentary Midnight Express, unfortunately the sound is overdubbed. But clearly songs like Gimme Shelter, Happy and Midnight Rambler can be recognised. Striking is that the audience is totally unresponsive. They didn't know that they were witnessing the best ever concert from the best ever band.

Wembley Arena, September 9 was filmed by the BC, but erased in the early 80's as far as is known. The KBFH show recorded both the Brussels and London shows in its entirety, so hopefully Wolfgang will give us the complete Wembley show soon.
