Yes, Brussels 73 or the combination with London 73 is the essential bootleg for me. I still play this one every week. I have several versions. In 1979 I bought the Bedspring Symphony vinyl with great intro on side 1. I also have a VGP and Rattlesnake set. Plus I have Headin' For An Overload which is the original Bedspring vinyl plus a slightly different broadcast. There's a zillion others available.

No matter which one you pick, the Gimme Shelter from London is to die for, Taylors guitar is simply not from this world! The version of Midnight Rambler can never be beaten. Other hightlights are Tumbling Dice, Angie, Dancing With Mr D. In fact every song is brilliant!!

I would have prefered a 73 Tour DVD much more than the new Biggest Bang, open the vaults!!

Brussels Affair is my first choice. Get Your Leeds Lungs Out the second. Leeds Lungs has a relaxed atmosphere, and you get the feeling that the band is enjoying themselves.

Nothing wrong with Brussels, but prefer Happy Birthday Nicky. A little rawer, more aggresive sound and Nicky instead of Billy. Maybe Keith's finest live sets. Complete shows also.

What version of Happy Birthday Nicky do you have?? Those recordings are not complete shows. Unless you have a newer version with the missing songs replaced by audience recordings.

I 'play' this one by ear...

'Unreleased Decca ...' consists of material from Philly July 21st 1972 1st show and Fort Worth June 24th 1972 1st + 2nd show

L&G consists of recordings from Houston Houston, JUne 25 1972 1st show
and Fort Worth June 24th, 1972

Sorry I can't remember exactly which tracks is from what show.

Thanks Sohoe. Thats a good one. But nothing is compareble to Brussel. Who also could be called "Taylors affair".

Nice overall list.

IMHO I think Brussels '73 is the One Essential Bootleg.

I reckon Midnight Rambler from Brussels Affair could be "THE" single greatest Rolling Stones live song ever caught on record. IMHO

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

My boo-boo. I was thinking the two discs gave you essentially a complete show, but I guess not (no JJF/SFM). Happy Birthday is still, IMO, the "Essential" Stones boot.

I actually prefer Back Strap Jacket from Australia 73 to Brussels although there's really very little in it. I think Love In Vain and Little Queenie are phenominal. It's a little rawer sounding and i think the group have a more cohesive sound which is why i favour it. I think Handsome Girls is a long way behind the best of the 72-73 tour recordings partly through the absence of Mick Taylor who gave the Stones that extra dimension. Handsome Girls would be the best bootleg from the Wood era, mind.

You got that right.
Interesting if someone have heard a version of Rambler who wasent recorded and could say they heard a better one. No live or recorded that Ive heard even comes close to brussels rambler. Was it filmed or what? I think some IORR members were there,we discussed it last year I think.

I think the best stones boot you can get...few versions of HIGH QUALITY RS at their best...Mick Taylor and Keith at their best....of course as well as the rest....my humble opinion

Oh yeah........those are great performances but I think there are better sounding versions than Happy Birthday Nicky. Do you know which version of Happy Birthday Nicky you have?

I know there's a new version of that out (Halcyon maybe? I dunno....hope Erik Snow reads this, he'll know) but the original Happy Birthday Nicky is not as good soundwise as Rocks Off (Perth 2/24/73 and a couple of songs from Sydney 2/26) and Rock and Roll Stew (complete Sydney 2/26/73 with "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Street Fighting Man" from an audience source).

I don't, got it through a trade.

Thanks TD07, hope somebody can provide info about a new version. It's a tough call, but I think I actually like the Sydney show a little better than Perth. Primo Vibrato!!

Karl - it's very close between the Sydney shows and Perth.
IMO I like the Perth one only because of a wicked Bitch & a Taylor-wah wah Gimme Shelter....but they are very close.

Overall, the Sydney, Perth & Brussels shows are must havs.

I have also been listening to the forgotten (and incomplete) Brussels second show!
IMO the best Taylor-era @#$%& EVER !!!!! Jagger & Keith on fire!

I only wish a complete version of this show surfaced....there might be a hidden gem in there!!!

"would love the the dvd of this to surface, it was filmed and is in the bbc archives".
I work at the BBC and regularly check what is in the archives. There has never been any footage from Brussels '73.

Anything of interest that is in Auntie's archives?

Complete audience tapes do exist for the Brussels shows. If you listen, you can hear why they switched some stuff out for the London shows. Billy gets a little overexuberant (IMHO) on the synthesizer. I have the original reels of this stuff, and NONE of the bootlegs sound like these. all the boots are way too trebly in my opinion. The mix on the reels is much more bassy and even. I have tried copying it, but no other format brings this show to life like the reels. I even have the KBFH Lps, and they sound like the boots, too. I have a feeling, that during broadcasts, most of the DJs added extra high end, in order to offset and loss during broadcast.

...so the second show exists ?

I am fairly certain. I will check when I get home from work. Here is what Nico says:

731017A 17th October: Brussels, Belgium, Foret Nationale (1st show)
(Brown Sugar/Gimme Shelter/Happy/Tumbling Dice/Star Star/Dancing
With Mr. D./Angie/You Can’t Always Get What You Want/Midnight
Rambler/Honky Tonk Women/All Down The Line/Rip This Joint/
Jumping Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man)
Note: Soundboard recording was made.

731017B 17th October: Brussels, Belgium, Foret Nationale (2nd show), incl.
(Gimme Shelter/Happy/Tumbling Dice/Star Star/All Down The Line/Rip This Joint)
Note: Soundboard recording was made.

I go even further: I reckon it the best piece of rock and roll music ever recorded live by anyone. A definitive performance.

I actually think the Sydney 2/26 show is a better performance. It's hard to judge the entire Perth performance because it's incomplete. At least the complete Sydney show is available on Rock and Roll Stew. I think the Perth recording sounds just a little better but Sydney is more complete and a really rocking performance. There's not much difference in the sound quality anyhow.
