Bon Jovi Scores First No. 1 Album Since 1988

June 27, 2007, 10:45 AM ET

Katie Hasty, N.Y.

For the first time since 1988, Bon Jovi tops The Billboard 200. "Lost Highway" sold 292,000 in United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the rock troupe's biggest one-week sum since Nielsen began tracking sales data in 1991. The Island/Mercury Nashville set is Bon Jovi's third No. 1 album, joining 1988's "New Jersey" and 1987's "Slippery When Wet." Sales were fueled in part by the group's new country fanbase, wrangled in with the 2006 No. 1 Hot Country Songs hit "Who Says You Can't Go Home" featuring Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles.

Rock duo the White Stripes have their best charting and sales week as "Icky Thump" (Third Man/Warner Bros.) enters at No. 2 with 223,000; the set's title track is No. 3 on Modern Rock Tracks for a second week. Jack and Meg White have enjoyed increasing success with each new album: 2005's "Get Behind Me Satan," started at No. 3 with 189,000, 2003's "Elephant" peaked at No. 6 while 2002's "White Blood Cells" topped out at No. 61.

Brad Paisley's fifth studio album, "5th Gear," bows at No. 3 and becomes his third No. 1 on Top Country Albums. The Arista Nashville effort begins with 197,000 units, the singer's best sales week ever. Sales were led by the single "Ticks," which currently crowns the Hot Country Songs chart.

After debuting at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 last week, Toby Keith's Show Dog Nashville set "Big Dog Daddy" slips to No. 4 with 73,000, a 64% sales hit. Paul McCartney's "Memory Almost Full" (Hear Music) falls 3-5 with 64,000 (-40%), while Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" (Machine Shop/Warner Bros.) sits tight at No. 6 for a second week, moving 63,000 (-23%).

Amy Winehouse's Universal Republic album "Back to Black" ascends 10-7, despite a 15% sales decrease to 62,000. Maroon 5's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" (A&M/Octone) descends 4-8 also with 62,000 and a 29% sales dip. Fabolous' "From Nothin' to Somthin'" (Desert Storm/Def Jam) slips to No. 9 after a No. 2 start last week with 59,000 (-63%). Rounding out the top tier, T-Pain's Konvict/Nappy Boy/Jive album "Epiphany" moves 5-10 with 56,000 and a 31% sales decrease.

Powered by its hit single "Party Like a Rockstar," Shop Boyz' debut album "Rockstar Mentality" (OnDeck/Universal Republic) bows at No. 11 with 52,000. Other big debuts this week include Lifehouse's fourth album "Who We Are" (Geffen) at No. 14 with 49,000, rapper Huey's "Notebook Paper" (HiTz Committee/Jive) at No. 26 with 29,000, Chrisette Michele's "I Am" (Def Jam) at No. 29 with 26,000 and Mandy Moore's "Wild Hope" (Firm Music) at No. 30 with 25,000.

Album sales are down 7.1% from last week's total at 8.90 million units and down 5.2% compared to the same week last year. Overall album sales for the year are down 15% compared to last year at 221 million units.

Bon Jovi is No. 1 and the White Stripes are No. 2? Pardon me one moment.

There. Now I feel MUCH better.

Make an easygoing pop CD and you will reach no. 1 on Billboard.

Then the question is for every band - how much do you have to compromise with yourself - does it matter being no. 1 on Billboard or not?

I can't believe enough people take them seriously at this point in their career to give them a number one album. I mean their stuff wasn't all that good to begin with and has gotten worse throughout the years.

I must be missing something. Was there like a thirteen dollar rebate inside each cd case?

You know it just goes to show that there are not many artists these days that really turn people on. That's why all the old rockers are still finding a market for their music. Their is no one else these days that anybody gives a crap about.

I remember a few years back People magazine was doing an on line contest for sexiest rock star or something and Bon Jovi was winning until a bunch of Stones fans started voting like crazy for Keith. Over the course of a few days, Keith vaulted ahead by tens of thousands of votes and when I want to bed on the final night of the voting, he was safely ahead. Needless to say, we know who somehow won and ended up on the cover of People.

I'm glad.I'm not a big fan but I like to see this sort of thing making tracks in the charts.

Am surprised I must admit. I mean, I bought it last week but I do think it a rather weak album. Starts out great and fizzles after the 4th song. Very mellow, and a sleeper if you find yourself up at 3 in the morning!

That seems to cement Bon Jovi's status as a country rock group now. Longeivity will show in the future if Rock N Roll was just a 50 year long fad in country music.

Should the Stones decide to record another country-rock flavoured album aimed at Nashville, I'm sure they'd score an even bigger hit with a much better record.
So maybe this is a sign that the time is right for Mick to give Keith's ballads a try?

Good on Bon bon is wgat I say

Think people are a little sore on here that Bon Jovi can score a No1. album, yet the Stones haven't managed it in some time.

They can play their insturments, write their own songs, have some classic rockers in their cannon, and damn it yes, they are a rock band.

Much rather have them at the top of the charts, even if it is rock lite!

Not at all, selling a lot records has nothing to do with being intellegent, creating an interesting moods, writing good songs etc
Same goes for lotsa of other things - look at the trash people are buying
One can even become the President without a head in function
Still, it's sad to see that people buy music of this lowest sort - just goes to show that - edit -

Oh please. As a Stones fan I am not jealous of Bon Jovi having a number one album. What is it his third? The Stones have three times as many number one albums in the U.S. charts.

The Stones still have their share of number ones- tours, dvds etc. Trust me we are not jealous of Bon Phony. Comparing them to The Stones (even in their sixties) is like comparing a guppy to a shark. Musically they are a laughing stock.

ooops, someone had commented, (since edited) wondering why bon jovi was having such success with the public....

so i had replied:

they just don't know any better...they came to the rock and roll party after rock and roll had left the building...whatever was left of it, they killed...
new jersey should be soooo ashamed....
then again, he is sorta like bruce...think about it...
if bruce had no soul, couldn't write, sounded like a adenoidal fake raspy squirrel, was pretentious beyond belief, and shallow as a dry river bed, had an awful band, and was a horrible offense to music, humanity and the spirit and body and glory of rock and roll, well then they'd be exactly alike...

The only reason they had a no. 1 is some corporate type came up with the idea of making some of the songs vaguely country-ish and marketing the album to country music fans. Not country music fans with good taste (those who like Willie, Waylon, Hank, etc.) but newer ones that like that popish Shania Twain country crap that sells so many albums these days.

So between Bon Jovi's traditional fan base (people who grew up in the '80s when Bon Jovi first came out and liked them because they didn't know any better - there was very little new good rock on commercial radio in the '80s) and the new country/pop converts, they had enough of an audience to get a No. 1. That and because albums sales are in the crapper, an album these days that sells enough to get to No. 1 wouldn't have gotten to No. 10 selling the same amount ten or more years ago.

It's a shame that video has pretty much destroyed music as we knew it. Now the visuals are at least as important as the song.

In other words, Jon and Richie's good looks have as much or more to do with their success as the music.

BTW, I heard Bon Jovi many, many, many nights at parties, etc., and enjoyed/ignored most of it. Not really awful, just not my cup of tea.
