OT: Artists you have seen from Monterey Pop/Woodstock

Hard to believe it's now been 40 years since the Monterey Pop Festival in '67, and soon to be the same anniversary of Woodstock in two years.

You can see Monterey Pop's list of performers at:

Woodstock's performers are listed at:

Question to all....who have you seen in concert from either event?

My list from Monterey Pop:
The Association, Canned Heat, Ravi Shankar, The Who, The Grateful Dead

For Woodstock:
Blood Sweat & Tears, David Sanborn (appearing with Paul Butterfield's Blues Band), Canned Heat (again), David Crosby and Graham Nash (no Stills for me yet), Grateful Dead (again), Arlo Guthrie, Iron Butterfly, Mountain, Santana, and the Who (again).

Would love to have seen Hendrix, but those two years I was just a little too young (12 & 14).

Of the performers that you have seen at those events, who would you see again? Who was fantastic? Who was awful?

Woodstock (a couple of repeats):
John Baez, Grateful Dead, Arlo Guthrie, Santana, Ravi Shankar, The Who

From Monterey I have seen: The Association, Eric Burden and the Animals, Simon and Garfunkel, Canned Heat, Country Joe and the Fish, Butterfield Blues Band, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Steve Miller Band, Booker T, Buffalo Springfield, Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix.

From Woodstock: Besides the ones previously mentioned, The Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Iron Butterfly, Mountain, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, Ten Years After, Johnny Winter.

The ones I wish I had seen are Otis Redding and The Who.

My favorites in live performances were Ten Years After (saw them twice), Creedence (3 times), Santana . . . . but all were good.

By the way, I found a video on YouTube of the last time I saw Hendrix. You can go to youtube and type in "Newport '69". You will see a blistering performance of Jimi at Devonshire Downs, Northridge, California in June of '69. My view of the stage was almost exactly where the cameera was.

Aside from the Stones, of course, there were some great bands in that era!

Sure were, DaveG. I also remember in 1970 seeing Rare Earth, J. Geils Band, and Canned Heat, all for about a five dollar ticket.....1972 seeing Alice Cooper, Todd Rundgren, and Free for the same price. Amazing.

When George Harrison and Ravi Shankar came here to Atlanta, I remember that the tickets were $9.00, and my friends and I were OUTRAGED...."NINE BUCKS?! You've got to be KIDDING me! Awww, I'll PAY it, it's George Harrison, but NINE BUCKS?! JESUS!!"

NOW, you have to pay ten bucks to hear MY band at a club here in Atlanta. Weird. If the Led Zep reunion rumours are true, can you just imagine those prices? They probably should do a lottery for tickets to be fair to everyone.

Ony the Who and Simon and Garfunkle from Monterey.
I have been to the Monterey Fairgrounds, where the festival was held,
a few times. If anyone is in Monterey (wonderful small town),
the Fairgrounds are usually open and you can just walk in
and cast your minds back. As with most things that you see in real life
after seeing it in pictures, I was amazed how small it is.
It's not that big a place at all. It's a rodeo/horse show area.
There's usually no one there, so you can climb on the stage.
A funny story about the Buffalo Springfield.
A few months after Monterey, they played my wife's high school
in Los Angeles...and the school lost money! THey didn't sell enough tickets.

My very first concert was supposed to be Buffalo Springfield, the Beach Boys, and the Strawberry Alarm Clock (how's THAT for a 60s lineup!), which was to be held in Greensboro, NC, the first weekend in April, 1968. Then Martin Luther King, Jr., was killed, and the show was, for obvious reasons, cancelled.

My first show wound up being The Association, at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, VA, January 1970.

I saw the Buffalo Springfield open for the Stones in '66 at the Hollywood Bowl. They were almost completely unknown then, and the crowd were more into the other 2 bands, The Standells and The McCoys. Yikes!!

Dave, there are photos from this show in the Buffalo Springfield box set. BS onstage in front of big photos of the Stones.

Thanks, Glam I'll have to get the set, not just for the music, but I'd love to see the pics. I still have vivid memories of that concert.

Good question, Voodoo. I know that Brian was at Monterey, although not as a performer. I wonder if the Stones weren't at Woodsti=ock because it was when they were in transition from Brian to MT and maybe were rehearsing for the '69 North American tour. Just a guess though . . . .
