My own review. The resurrection of the King of Riff
After Werchter, a simple draft and Paris at 80%, i didn't know what to expect for a show in a "small" town with 30000 persons in a 45000 stadium.
With the Stones you can't be predicitve, the show was awesome : 8 different songs between Lyon and Paris,i guess it is a new record. I talk about 2 stadium shows in a row (Twickenham got 6 or 7 different songs).
After Starsailor, i notice 2 acoustic guitars and ask myself what song will be play.
The stadium is not full but the weather is fine and the vibrations just good.
Start me up : the sound is already clear but will improve until the perfect sound.
It's only R&R : first surprise, Keith is good and near the end of the song, when the audience begin to sing "only R&R" spontaneously, i see on Mick's face his smile or "THE" smile meaning : it's gonna be a good evening" and i'm not wrong.
She's so cold with the images of the past on the screen : fantastic, even the end is perfect in time.
Bitch : Keith is on fire and Mick more and more relax
Monkey man : tonight i'm with my elder daughter and Let it bleed is her album.
Mick is late to begin the song and swallow the first sentence; This is the first "mistake" of the evening i can notice. The version is gorgeous and the sound between Ron on slide and Keith on rythmic is phenomenal.
Mick grabs an acoustic guitar and i think Sweet Virginia is the next one but no it's Let it bleed - i just can't believe it -
Midnight Rambler : the dream goes on, a huge version with a fantastic audience.
I make a long "film" on this one with my camera, may be 4 or 5 minutes.
I'll go crazy : ouch, at last they stick again on the Paris set-list after 6 different songs.
Tumblin' dice : what can i say...nothing...no voice, no word to describe even in french
Intros : Charlie does a solo, a real one longer than in Paris and more structured
And now i discover the second acoustic guitar in the Ronnie's hands and he got a bottleneck!? And the best moment of the evening with a fabulous You got the silver.
Keith is in heaven but i'm higher : i got this complete song in my camera and i have to do a single DVD with this single song for the posterity.
Wanna hold you : Keith reads the lyrics on the prompter and everything goes better. He even says Bonsoir and Merci beaucoup without english accent like Mick does.
Miss you to follow (Under my thumb would be greater but YCAGWYW) : the end is a little bit confuse, that's the second tiny "mistake".
Rough justice : great
Get off my cloud : very fast and Mick sings the 2nd verse twice, last already forgiven mistake.
HTW to the main stage and the "warhorses" : great solos, Keith focused all along, Mick in a delirium...everything above perfection.
Some more details : Keith didn't use his white Gretsch for all the evening even on Wanna hold you, could he be better on differents axes?
Ron wore a wonderful T-shirt Iron Lion Zion for the intros.
Lisa wore a kind of Lacroix dress for the end of the show.
After the show i met some french fans and we all hug with tears in our eyes.
All in all this 54th show would remain as one of the best at least in a stadium and i saw in the past Barcelona 98, Chicago 05, Paris 06...real vintages...
My next one will be Budva then London 3 to finish with 56 shows, my year of birth.

As it has always been with this band, when Keith comes in ready to rock, the band can soar. Without him pushing it, the concerts can't reach the high levels that they are capable of. I am very happy to hear the Lyon gig was a great one for those that made it, and I hope Keith is doing well. Don't quit on these guys yet.

thanks for all the beautifully fascinating details, Marclaff -
i'm so glad for you and for everyone who was at this hot hot show!

thanks - i was studying the photos for just that reason!
he's switched from the white Gibson to that cream-coloured Tele for Wanna Hold You -
who played the solo on it? and what guitar did Ronnie use? please and thank you to anyone who remembers

For this tour (2007), Keith used this white Gibson for many songs : Wanna hold you, She was hot even Satisfaction in Werchter.
I'm pretty sure he ain't comfortable with this guitar.
Yesterday in Lyon he didn't use it on the main stage (may be on the B stage??).
For Wanna hold you, Keith does the solo, in fact he tried to do the solo in Werchter and Paris, Ron does a lot of licks and Blondie plays on electric the rythmic part.
Yesterday as the sound was perfect, it was obvious : Keith does the intro and the outro, sings without playing and does a solo.

>> For this tour (2007), Keith used this white Gibson for many songs <<

right - i meant the Lyon Wanna Hold You, in particular.
i was intrigued by his choice to use the white Gibson/standard tuning for it at earlier shows this tour,
so it's also real interesting that he's now switched back to a Tele.

>> Keith does the intro and the outro, sings without playing and does a solo. <<

thanks! he pretty much alternated singing/playing on it in 97 too.
i guess i started noticing his tendency not to sing and play at the same time in 90 -
ahem, but i digress, sorry! did he keep the dirty verse in it in Lyon? :E

The three last gigs I attended were Werchter, Paris and Lyon.
I enjoyed all of them. Each time Keith was the focal point.

In Werchter, he looked drunk or stoned, maybe both. He could hardly speak, but played good anyway.
In Paris, he looked pretty tired, but he performed well and was great.
In Lyon, he was absolutely fantastic during the two hour show. He was in high vitality. He was running, moving all around, playing guitars terrifically. Besides, he sang You Got the Silver, perfectly without any instrument in hand. He played the encore Jumping Jack Flash with such vigour and rhythm that he gave the impression that he was going to saw his guitar.
Keith is really a great performer and so are Mick, Charlie and Ronnie. The Stones have been great for forty-four years and they will never stop…
I am eager to go to next gig.

Ariz, your last one of Mick in front of horns and Darryl should go to Rolling Stones magazine, imo.

ouch! - Cream-coloured Tele?

Do you mean the Telecaster with the rosewood fretboard, single coil neck pup and white pickguard?
lets have an own thread about official colours of "his" guitars.

btw, it's nice to read the british way of "coloured" instead of U.S. "colored"

what do you call this colour?
in 97 he was using that butterscotch Tele with a single-coil neck pick-up - isn't that interesting.
(and he was improvising the lyrics then too, by the way. did he include the dirty verse in Lyon??)

Oh My God........I thought Paris was a great show, hang on it WAS a great show, but Lyon was quite extraordinary. The gig has been reported in detail on this thread, but I can only add what a joy it was to hear such songs as Let It Bleed and Monkey Man performed Live and what a joy it was to see Keith and the whole band in such fine form. BarRoomQueen, myself, Beast and paulywaul were grinning with excitement as the setlist unfolded and revelled in the atmosphere of The Rolling Stones giving us all a show to remember. What´s more, they were really enjoying themselves too!

The Bigger Bang just got even bigger......

I guess I was a little exaggerating - it's not really *ouch*.
I believe they call that colour blond, but with the new Baja Telecaster is called Desert Sand.
quite confusing, while they all look cream coloured winking smiley

I still don't know if Keith include the dirty verse in Wanna Hold You.
that question is still up for those who were there.

In Paris Keith sang something like....I'm gonna shove it up your.....whatever
here's a snippet of it

i agree! and people seem to use "blond" for everything from natural to butterscotch to this kind of finish,
not to mention for Gibson's TV yellow and lord knows what else, so ... so let's say i was describing it rather than naming it.
and you knew what i meant, so ... so there. :E

>> here's a snippet of it <<

LoFL! thanks my dear. sounds just like Keith to me!
the version on the B2B dvd has some improvised lyrics too - not as hilarious as this, though :E

I think Marclaff raises an interesting about whether Keith is better or worse on different guitars. I was thinking the same thing in Paris. All the solos he played on the big black or big white Gibsons he messed up (except for Rough Justice). But the solos he played on the yellow Les Paul special (Sympathy, Satisfaction) were two of the best I've ever seen him do. The big guitars are much heavier than the les paul special and the stratocaster that he plays on I'll Go Crazy. What do other people think?

Re: Lyon reports
Posted by: with sssoul ()

Mathijs said this a while ago about the relative weights of Keith's instruments:

>> A regular Tele is around 6.5 to 7 pounds, any ES-335/ES355 is between 9 and 10 pounds
(especially with the Bigsby and Grovers, they add up). A Les Paul is around the 9 punds,
but at Gibson's Custom Shop they can choose the wood and make them around 8 pounds. ...
I bet his Tele Custom is close to 9 pounds, as is his '55 Butterscotch Tele.
He even used the old Dan Armstrong again: 12 pounds. And again, the ES-355 is not a lightweight guitar. <<

that's in this thread here if you want the whole context: [www.iorr.org]

which is the "55 butterscotch Tele", by the way - isn't Micawber usually said to be a 52? although it varies :E
i recall an interview last year where Keith was saying one of his butterscotch Teles
is seriously heavy, but he didn't specify which one he meant, and if i recall right
the kind patient learned iorr guitar experts couldn't sort it out either.

but anyway, the tree i'm trying to bark up is: i wonder if weight could have something to do with
Keith using the 67 sunburst Tele on Happy now? if i'm following Mathijs right,
that one would be considerably lighter than the Teles we've gotten used to seeing him with on Happy.
update: just watched some video clips from Paris, and Keith used the black custom Tele for Happy there,
so that's another good theory shot to hell! i love it when he does that :E

>> the yellow Les Paul special <<

it's a Junior - technically the model is (or was, originally) called a Les Paul TV,
which is a Junior with the "TV yellow" finish, designed to show up well on black & white television.
same as the doublecut Junior he uses on Rambler.

About the white Gibson Les Paul Junior: First, the neck is shorter compared to a Telecaster which results in lower string tension. Second, the neck is thinner compared to the big hollow body Gibsons. Both things make playing easier and that may help him a lot, just look at his fingers. Since i love the sound of that guitar, its fine for me.

same here Firebird - and i was pondering whether the neck wouldn't have more to do with it than the weight,
so thanks for highlighting that.

and ... oh never mind. maybe open-g's right that we should start a thread about Keith's Guitar Colours. :E
both Juniors Keith is using now are "TV yellow". i wonder if the sunburst Junior will make an appearance as well.

Yeah, you are right, the color is "TV yellow". Regarding the sound, I think 98 percent of the poeple in the audience do not even notice how different gitars like the LP Junior, a Tele or a ES355 sound.
