The photo of Jagger at the microphone on the C2C Chicago show "She Liked The Way I Held The Microphone" is from Vancouver.

The only guess I have about Keith standing to Jagger's right has to do with the performance of "Happy." Did they incorrectly think that that side would be easier?

Years ago there was a used clothes store in Isla Vista, California adjacent to UCSB. Under the glass counter was a photocopy of a check signed by Mick Jagger for some clothes purchased by him in the Los Angeles store of the same company. There was also a photo of him wearing that '72 leather jacket which I was told was purchased with that check.

I´m not really a guitar geek but I´ve never seen any other pics of Keith playing a Fender Mustang (Or is this a Jaguar?).

Vancouver´72 is such a strange show...

BTW thanks for the pics Erik.

Okay here's one:

This is a nice pic, but it's definitely not Vancouver, as MJ wore the black leather here. This denim jacket didn't appear until San Diego and was most commonly seen during the 2nd part of the tour. Also, the Vancouver scarf was very light in color, not the dark one seen here.

Here's another Vancouver.

Hi Torn&Frayed, yes I noticed that as well, quite surprising
All the other Vancouver 72 photos of Keith playing that guitar is either B&W, or Keith was standing in the shadows - which made me think it was some sort of "extra sized Telecaster"....it's not before now that I see it's a red Mustang
Maybe Mathijs or open-g will chime in, while waiting for With Sssoul...

This is fabulous! This is something I have been looking for the last 20 years or so!

The firs couple of shows of the '72 tour are a bit mysterious, as they did have problems with shipping gear. I have always understood that for the Vancouver and Seattle gigs they were playing with some of the backup gear, and they were experimenting with some gear they acquired after the robbery at Nellcote in July '71.

From left to right: Ampeg Armstrong bass, used throughout the '72 tour, but in Seattle Bill played his Competition Mustang Bass (also on this picture).

Then a 3 pickup Custom with Bigsby: I have never ever seen this guitar in the Stones camp! Keith's Customs were stolen in '71, and this probably is the replacement.

'54 Tele: Keith used this one throughout '72 to '76, then the tongue was removed. I am not sure this is the same guitar as Malcolm, but it does look like it.

The famous Gibson ES 345 that was used by Taylor after he left the Stones. Uncertain if this is the same 345 used on Exile and before on tour.

Fender Musicmaster: Absolutely cheapest of the cheap, and for sure a replacement guitar. Never seen again -and never seen before.

Bill's Mustang bass, never to be seen after the Seattle '72 gigs.

Micawber: acquired in March '71, here still without the PAF neck pickup fitted. The pickup was fitted somewhere along the '72 tour. Also stil with original three-saddle bridge.

A sunburst Tele. I have one picture from Seattle '72 of this guitar. Is this the '67 Sunburst he used ever since '81? It does not look like it. Is this a loan or rent?

'57 Strat. Used throughout the '72 tour, seen briefly on the '79 NB tour, and again in '88 for press shots.

Mathijs - I knew the minute I saw this pic in the thread that you'd be all over it...very cool background information man! I have never seen that Musicmaster in any pictures...how cool!

Thanks for the insight.

Thanks Mathijs! What knowledge..! Yes, I guess the Gibson ES 345 could be the same as the one he's playing here....allthough difficult to be certain about it

Yesterday I listned to the bootleg CD of this show on VGP, only the special songs like Ventilator Blues, Torn & Frayed and Loving Cup. Some big mistakes in it like the end of Ventilator Blues and very long time between songs to adjust guitar, sound etc. It really takes minutes to start a song sometimes! No wonder they never played it again.

Keith stood on the left in Vancouver. Mick's scarf is the longish one he wore w/the red polka dot at SF#3. Mick is not wearing the leather jacket, but a shiny top.

I know this has been the story for so long, but it doesn't seem like it's true.

For example, according to John Catto who seems to have some connections to be able to know such things Keith gave his psychedelic custom to Ken Rogan? but asked for it back and got it.

Then there's the non psych custom he's seen playing 69 - 71, was this stolen from France? That means the custom he is shown holding at that early 80's? photo session is yet another custom, or, is it the same one he used circa 69 - 71!?

John Catto say's Keith has many customs. The fact they are all bloody black makes it nearly impossible to differentiate between them unless they have a bigsby or psych paint work etc.

I notice the bigsby custom has a capo on the 2nd fret, which song does that suggest it was used for?

I didn't realize Keith had so many 3PU Customs. The Bigsby LP is only one of three I have seen pics of. I wonder where it is today and why he didn't use it more on the tour? Also, why the Music Master? As to which songs he used the Custom on, I would guess Jumping Jack Flash and Streeting Fighting Man. I don't have the Vancouver setlist handy so I'll check it out later.

Re: Vancouver, Canada 1972
Posted by: His Majesty ()

The capo is on the 2nd fret, for JJF etc it's usually on at the 4th fret.

Seems the stones have had about 5 50's customs or so, atleast those that have been used in public.

There seems to have been two of those P90/Alnico customs, the one Keith used has a ABR bridge, where as the one Mick is pictured using has that weird 'dog bone' shaped bridge.

Then there's the psych custom, the 69- 71 plain custom and now this bigsby. If the theft story is true, then the custom Keith is shown holding at the 80's photo sessions means there's yet another one.
