RUN RUN RUDOLPH!

Has Keith ever played it live (New Barbarians / Winos ?)???

the Barbarians rehearsed it; the Winos played it at East Rutherford

That was the only ever live performance I'm aware of (17/12/88 - last show of the Talk is Cheap tour)

Bewildered as to why the Barbarians would have rehearsed it - as their tour was during the summer, they would hardly have been thinking of playing it.

Mind you, with the volume of substances consumed on that tour, anything would have been possible....

>> Bewildered as to why the Barbarians would have rehearsed it <<

because they could! and/or: because it was there. :E
anyway Barbarian Rudolph sounded great.
(their tour was apr 24th - may 22nd, not counting the Special Dates before and after it)

still even further away from Christmas!

Was thinking of 'summer'' because Knebworth was the last gig, in August '79.

actually the last Barbarian show was in Milwaukee, january 16th 1980 -
but i count that as outside the tour per se, like the CNIB gigs and Knebworth.
but does this mean you haven't heard the Barbarian Rudolph?
i'll have to see if i can figure out how to remedy that ... :E

Thats the gig without Keith though, isnt it?

I have NB rehearsals from Culver City in April '79 - cant recall if Run Rudolph is on that, though

When the Winos played it at the Byrne Arena, Johnnie Johnson was on piano -- like you had died and gone to heaven, until the music ended and you realized you had to find your car among the beer cans...

I suspect that Keith can play most Chuck Berry numbers in his sleep - if you listen to boots, the Berry tracks are generally in a groove, with very few glaring errors -- Little Queenie, Carol, Let It Rock, Bye Bye Johnny. It's a bit of a shame that the Stones don't play his stuff anymore.

I still wish that the guys would resurrect "Let It Rock". The 1978 version is my favorite set opener from ALL of the tours.

This one in particular, from "Handsome Girls" :

The version of "Let It Rock" on Get Your Leeds Lungs Out is also very good.

right, and without Stanley Clarke, and without Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters on the drums.
smile: strangely enough, it's also apparently Milwaukee (but in 1979) where they played Rudolph at the soundcheck.

Right, I recall reading that too; about the fans rioting. But who ended up playing? In the setlists from the tour they do the entire regular set. Even Keith's vocl numbers.

From nzentgraf.de:

800116A 16th January: THE NEW BARBARIANS. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Uptown Theater.
Line-up: RW (gtr, voc)/lan McLagan (p, org, voc)/Bobby Keys (sax)/
Johnnie Lee Schell (gtr)/Reggie McBride (bass)/Andy Newmark (dr)/Mackenzie Philips (bvoc on some songs)
Note: 2 1/2 hours set, mostly RW songs, some Ian McLagan-songs and Honky Tonk Women (unverified) as the only Stones-song.

the riot was at the 1979 Milwaukee show, where the usual Barbarian line-up (including Keith!)
played the usual Barbarian set - i've got a bootleg of the show, and they blew the freakin roof off,
so maybe the riot was just Milwaukee's way of askin for more? :E
but it was blamed on the promotion implying too strongly that there would be "special guests"
(ie Jagger or Dylan) who didn't (of course) appear, and the 1980 show was to make up for the damage done.
the 1980 set list doesn't seem to be confirmed anywhere, so i guess Chelsea must be referring to the 1979 Milwaukee set list?

Just discovered the Milwaukee 79 soundcheck on YouTube. Great version, but it didn't make the (known) setlists.

I was lucky enough to have been there that night so long ago and I was one of the ones looking for the car after the show , I kept mixing up the sections in the darn big parking lot . What a special night it was after all and the only live RUN RUN RUDOLPH BLOWS MY MIND AWAY .!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been there Greek.... where is the confounded car!!!
Dang big parking lots grinning smiley I eventually hadto make a rule, especially for big parking lots in news places far away. Rule- When exiting the vehicle and walking into the venue, be sure to look back at 10 feet, 50 feet, 100 feet, 200 feet, 500 feet, 1000 feet, 2000 feet, 5000 feet and keep looking for and making mental notes of non-moveable landmarks (aka not the big white Ford van we parked next too) towards where the dang vehicle is. was. I try to pass that on to my nephews and nieces and other youngsters...

Great unique moment, especially if you were there, I agree.

Superb piano playing by Johnny Johnson, way up in the mix in the beginning thumbs up

What strikes me is Steve Jordan's neanderthaler drumming... No ROLL at ALL... Strange...

I was at both Milwaukee shows. This Uptown Theatre show was a mess. Ronnie was pretty drunk and kept knocking over his music stand. Mackenzie Phillips sang backup on HTW. Admission was free with a new toy (for charity.) I remember the bass player stepping up to do a solo (yeah, a bass solo!), and halfway into it he stepped on his cord, yanking it out of his bass. He bent down, plugged it back in and continued. A lot of people left early. By the end of the show I'll bet there weren't more than 50 people left, all crowded right up in front of the stage.
