Thoughts on "Biggest Bang" DVDs

Having waded through most of it, here are some initial thoughts…

Disc 1 is superb! This is the showcase. The band is in good form and the mixed-up setlist gives it some freshness. Ronnie rips the second solo on Sway, it could have gone on much longer, “Bob Wills…” is well done, nice country vocal, not too hammy. Keith’s Buddy Holly tune is ragged but a fitting tribute. T&A is disappointing…all horned up and kind of long. Ain’t Too Proud is good to hear, but not the best version. Nice intro to a great version of “Under My Thumb”. The rest is what you would expect, great night/great Stones show! Oh yeah, the "I Can't Be Satisfied" jam from the soundcheck at Milan is perfect!

Still too many camera cuts, the sound is very good, but I am not set up for 5.1 yet!

Disc 2 is a disappointment, only because I have had this show for a while and I always thought the band was a bit tentative at this gig. Buenos a bit later was superior (some of that show is on disc 3). I didn’t watch too much of this one.

Disc 3 is a hodgepodge of Eastern and South American shows. I really enjoyed the documentary of the Shanghai show. “Moonlight Mile” plays in the background while the band talks about their feelings about finally playing in China. Keith says “If they try to keep me out, I’m going to find a way to get in”. The Duets are pretty mixed. Bonnie Raitt is perfect for Shine A Light, Eddie Vedder is less annoying than Dave Mathews but can’t harmonize worth sh*t. The Chinese guy sounds like William Hung.

I’ve only watched bits & pieces of disc 4 so far. It seems like a good documentary. I didn’t see any real old footage. The songs from the Totonto warm-up club gig are complete, great footage!

Also, this box matches the description on the Best Buy site, not Futureshop link posted earlier.

I know this isn’t very in-depth, there is a lot to absorb! If you have any specific questions, just ask!

Thank you very much for that review!
What about the guitar sound, the mix? Does it sound good?

Oh so those extra "archive" songs aren't there...like the clapton, axl rose and hubert sumlin clips?

how's keith and ronnie in the mix? guitars loud? does it represent the wonderful sound we got on this tour?

Guitars are loud & clear, but I think I liked the mix on Live Licks better. the drums don't "whack" as much as i would prefer, either. I realy need to set of the 5.1 sound to get the full gist of it.

thank you Ross -
if you run into anything that looks like the sixth number "never released before in any format"
i'll be fascinated to hear about it (until further notice i guess they're referring to the "busking by Mick"
or simply miscounted)

Thanks for the report, Ross. BTW, yes, you owe it to yourself to invest in a 5.1 setup.

Also, be on the lookout for any hidden "Easter Eggs". I believe Four Flicks has a couple of them.

Artinis,

I think the "Bitch" during the credits is edited. It is right at 3 minutes so it's most of the song. And, yes, it's live!

Bassplayer,

I will be on an easter egg hunt for sure!

thanks for the review, Ross.

Youre not one of the ones who bought this on e-bay are you?

No, Gazza.

I got a tip from IORR-ian Danielisdell that they were on the shelf at a Best Buy not far from me. I figure they were in the back and a stock-boy put them out by mistake. Best Buy isn't known for hiring mental giants!

But they had a ton of FOUR FLICKS out (more than usual..price was NOT reduced).

i guess we got the Best Buy employee with the high school diploma.
(just kidding) Best Buy employees are no dumber than Circuit City employees.

Ross or anyone: do you know the format of the DVDs? 16x9 for large-screen?

Glam,

Austin and Rio are 16x9. To be honest, I can't recall for sure if the others are or not! I will be watching more of it tonight I'm sure!

Steven,

JJF opener sounded great as I recall. I skipped around on that one a lot since I had seen it. the sound is an upgrade from the torrent version.

Any chance to put up the excerpts from this awesome dress rehearsal for TV shooting?
This is hotter than Saitama in spades.

Claudia (Mrs. Plexiglass) is going to Best Buy to pick up some items I set aside and I asked the guy on the phone if he could add a copy of TBB to my other items.

He looked it up on the computer and said yes, they had it and that in fact, he had seen a bunch of them for sale.

So he will add it to my pile and I should get a chance to enjoy it tonight!

Tim

Update - Bastards!!

when it got to where Claudia went in to get it, they decided after all it could not be sold til the 12th, bastards. Sorry for being precipitious.
