Very OT-OT (is this a first?), what is it about hockey players and Canadian politics? Ken Dryden is now a Member of Parliament, having recently run and lost the party leadership bid, and Frank Mahovalich - The Big M himself - is a Senator (as in the second House of Parliament, not the about-to-win-the-Cup Senators...)
There is something about those vintage players though. I was never a huge hockey fan, but being a Canuck, I think I was born knowing what icing is (and had to study hard to learn the infield fly rule). A few years ago I was in a local department store when I ran into Darryl Sittler and Johnny Bower waiting to start a book signing. Lots of dads and kids (and moms) lined up waiting, and I came down the escalator to where their table was set up. Johnny caught my eye just as I saw and recognised him, and I broke into a huge grin, blew him a kiss and a wink that no-one else saw, and he just grinned back at me. Those were the days, when the Stones defined R&R and guys like Johnny Bower were hockey heros. Deja vu all over again, sports fans.
And as a little pre-Cups finals gift to all my pals stateside, and especially on the left coast, a little Canadian ditty to strike fear into your loser hearts, and make you understand once and for all why Canada rules the ice, even if it's just in our drinks! (Yes, we all know the words, sing along, demand it be played every game, and the only thing that could improve this would be to see Keef and Ronnie take a turn with it - it could happen!)
Oh, yeah. Duckies? Phthffft!!!!!! (Heh heh heh!)
