A fusillade of 'Pirates'

ANAHEIM, Calif. — With the openings of Spider-Man 3 and Shrek the Third history, it's on to the summer's third No. 3: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. It arrives Thursday night.

The hoopla started Saturday night at Disneyland with an over-the-top premiere. At 8:45, composer Hans Zimmer appeared on a stage before a giant movie screen with an electric guitar to lead his orchestra in selections from the film's score. After the cast was introduced, the film played until 11:35. Then came fireworks.

With leading lady Keira Knightley in Europe shooting The Edge of Love, Keith Richards easily emerged as the most colorful character of the evening.

"I feel like I'm on a sort of flashback acid trip," the Rolling Stones legend marveled on the red carpet. Richards joins the cast as father to Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, and Depp got a big chuckle after hearing Richards' remarks. "Disneyland is all about the imagination, and that sort of psychedelia can go in any direction, can't it? It can be quite dark, and it can be quite light and perfect here at the happiest place on Earth with the giant mice."

Looking very Depp himself in a black vest, skulled scarf, shades and jewelry, Richards said he and Depp are "growing into each other." He arrived in L.A. on Thursday and is now off to Brussels to begin rehearsals with his fellow Stones for a concert June 5.

Geoffrey Rush (Captain Barbossa) walked the carpet with his character's pet monkey, Chiquita, 11, perched atop his shoulder and sipping from a juice box. Rush joked, "I invited the monkey because I knew they were going to print a lot of photographs of Johnny (Depp) and Orlando (Bloom), and I needed a gimmick."

Disney has plenty of those to keep Pirates on moviegoers' minds. Among them:

•Beginning Tuesday, Disneyland guests can download exclusive features to their Nintendo DS players at three X-marked spots near the Pirates ride.

•On Friday, Disneyland will unveil its Pirates Lair attraction on the redesigned Tom Sawyer Island.

And Pirates' voyage in theaters might not yet be done. Though producer Jerry Bruckheimer vetoed a TV series, he says more Pirates movies and even a Broadway musical are "a definite possibility."

Which Brussels club is most likely? Or will they do a club show in Amsterdam, to promote Nijmegen? The Paradiso??

Today in the newspaper "De Morgen": Only 20.000 tickets sold out of 60.000 for Werchter says Herman Schueremans promotor of the Werchter festival site. I don't think the Stones management will appriciate his comment: "Because the Stones preform so often in Belgium, they organize there own inflation."

Frontman Mick Jagger kan het Belgische publiek niet meer begeesteren. 'Door frequenter naar België te komen, hebben de Stones voor hun eigen inflatie gezorgd', analyseert organisator Herman Schueremans.

WERCHTER l 'Het lokale bedrijf Stageco levert het podium voor de tournee. Dan is het logisch dat in de dagen vóór het eerste optreden een en ander in elkaar moet worden gepast. In het bijzijn van de groep, ja', zegt organisator Herman Schueremans over de Belgische repetitie van de groep.'

Er zijn tijden geweest dat een Europese tournee van The Rolling Stones een ware stormloop ontketende. Iedereen wilde de legendarische rockband wel minstens één keertje gezien hebben. Maar blijkbaar komt er sleet op de formule: geen van de 24 concerten is uitverkocht en de voorverkoop laat veel te wensen over.
Dat staat in schril contrast met de jubelende mededeling dat de Stones onlangs in Rio de Janeiro anderhalf miljoen mensen op de been wisten te brengen en dat het eerste deel van de A Bigger Bang Tour al 160 miljoen dollar heeft opgeleverd.
"Het ene concert loopt beter dan het andere, maar voor de show in Werchter zijn inderdaad slechts 20.000 kaartjes verkocht", geeft Herman Schueremans toe. "Wellicht een gevolg van de afgelasting van hun concert vorig jaar in het Brusselse Koning Boudewijnstadion. De mensen kregen hun kaartjes wel terugbetaald, maar de annulatie was voor niemand plezierig. Hoewel het concert toen niet doorging, is wel de perceptie ontstaan dat de Stones zowat jaarlijks in het land zijn. In de ogen van het publiek is het geen evenement meer en dus zal de wei in Werchter slechts voor een derde gevuld zijn. Maar sta me toe Johan Cruijff te citeren: 'Elk nadeel heb z'n voordeel.' De oude, gezette Stonesfan zal nu tenminste genoeg ruimte hebben om ongestoord met zijn buikje te draaien."
Heeft die geringe publieksopkomst financiële gevolgen voor Live Nation? "Neen", zegt Schueremans. "De Stones organiseren hun tournees zelf. Wij zijn slechts waterdragers die olijk uitvoeren wat ons wordt opgedragen. Kijk, vroeger deden de Stones hooguit eens in de vijf jaar Europa aan en leek het alsof God zelf op aarde was nedergedaald. Door die frequentie op te drijven hebben de heren voor hun eigen inflatie gezorgd. Zelf zou ik hen hebben geadviseerd dit keer niet naar België te komen, maar The Stones laten zich door niemand de les voorschrijven. Ik gok dat er in het beste geval 30.000 toeschouwers naar Werchter zullen afzakken. En wie weet is het nu écht de laatste keer. Ik zou voor alle zekerheid toch maar een kaartje kopen. (lacht)"

Met de platenverkoop van de Stones wil het iets beter vlotten. Van de cd A Bigger Bang gingen in ons land 15.000 stuks over de toonbank, leren we van Werner Pottoms, hoofd van de Salesafdeling bij EMI. "Een mooi resultaat dat de verkoop van de vorige cd's ruim overtrof. Ook de vriendelijk geprijsde back catalogue gaat nog altijd vlotjes van de hand."
De oude, gezette Stonesfan zal nu genoeg ruimte hebben om ongestoord met zijn buikje te draaien

That's a good one from Herman.
He also says (and I think he's right) that the people have a feeling the Stones tour every year even if that's not the case and so they are not a "not to miss act" anymore.

Of course, the marketing this tour suCks. They should have started with a free concert in Rome, with a BANG

Don't believe this 20.000 tix thing. If it'd be true, the gig would have been cancelled for sure (see Leipzig 06: 18.000 sold out of 45.000 by the time of cancellation) or at least a BIG opening act had been booked (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers/ AC/DC/ U2 league).

Mojo stated that they expect 40.000 in Nijmegen at best

We have been agreeing on the strangeness of many marketing strategies around Stonesgigs.... but I really cannot see why they would provide a lower number than the actual sales. To say it's even less popular than it actually is, doesn't raise the 'coolness' of the event. Why do you think the number is too low beast of burgk?

I asked someone from goformusic a month ago how many tics were sold and he stated it were more than 35.000! So i'm not sure if the 20.000 thing is true

Baboon, don't ask me about the coolness ratio of the amount of sold ticketss... I always try to buy the first one!

I was just wondering about Beast of Burgk's post that they could have mentioned a LOWER figure on purpose. And I just cannot find a clue why they would do such a thing... It is therefor that I added 'coolness' to the amount of sold tickets, because IF the number actually stimulates the sales in any way, I'd exprect it to be the other way around: nearly sold out = popular = need to be there... A bit more clear now? Hope so...
