Carlos Santana & The Stones MSG 1975
Posted by: brass olive ()
Date: May 2, 2007 15:04

I know that during the 6 nights at Madison Square gardens 22nd to the 27th June 1975 that Eric Clapton & Carlos Santana both guested on Sympathy For The Devil.
I have spotted some photos of Clapton with the Stones on Sympathy but never sighted any of Carlos during his guest spot with the Stones.

Do any exist?

If so, can that kind soul known as Rockman who reaches into his bottomless bag of tricks & produces endless awesome Stones photographs provide these?
Or anyone else for that matter ?
Thanks if anyone can.

Cheers,
Brass Olive

I was unaware of that! now that would have been a great time to "try out" Can't You Hear Me Knocking--can you imagine carlos Santana playing the MT riff?!

Sympathy is great Bill and Charly trying for 3 minutes to get synchronized.

Clapton and Santana are known guests, but Jesse Ed Davis also guested on SFTD, at the LA Forum.

all 11 of the LA and NY shows from 1975 are in circulation, many of them in very good or excellent quality

I only have "Hold On Tight" and "Eric Clapton & His Rolling Stones". Any others on the RO BT-tracker Gazza?

Who else played on "Sympathy For The Devil" at MSG on 6/25/75? I know when Clapton and Santana played, Keith played bass. The 6/25 version starts out with the bass riff so I'm wondering if it's Keith?

I dunno. I need to go listen to it and pay more attention.

Well, of course, there's some Santana in the MT solo, but the rhythm Taylor plays earlier in the song might not be so natural for Santana. I've always thought Ronnie doesn't get enough credit for his lead playing, but I also think Taylor often doesn't get enough credit for his rhythm playing/weaving.

At that point in time Santana could play anything. He was at an absolute peak, learned an awful lot with John McLaughlin, etc. One listen to "Lotus" (live set recorded in Japan in '73) or "Borboletta" ('74) or "Love, Devotion & Surrender" should convince you.

You are referring to those dreamy, jazzy kind of chords aren't you? I love these!

thanks again for Eric's pic, but are there any others??
It seems they are quite rare compared to the many with Eric C.

Dont know. Theres loads of shows on there and as I'm not the 'host' of it, I dont really keep an eye on whats available on an everyday basis.

Cant access it from work - but youre welcome to have a peek!

Texas fan I am with you on that: Taylor did a lot of great rhythm playing. And he "wove" with the best of 'em. Esepcially early on in 69-71 there was a lot of back and forth between Keith and Taylor.
Jesse Ed Davis on SFTD? ThAT is nice on paper, but to be real - he didn't come and light it up. Strummed the chords and drank the booze.

I believe one of the officially released versions of L.A. 75 has the Jessie Ed Davis encore.

In the 18 years (!) since this remark I have learned Taylor's solo [edit: of Time Waits For No One] is loosely based on Santana's 'Song of the Wind' track from the 1972 album Caravanserai'.

Please excuse me if my maths is wrong here but CYHMK came out the year before in 71. Unless of course Mick Taylor had a time machine.

Bill has been missed since he left. And that bass by KR is downright frightening — it gives you goosebumps...…makes you want to find a place to hide.

It was Carlos who recommended the Mesa Boogie amps for the Stones. He's playing it here, as we see from the picture smiling smiley

To be honest, I wasn't even aware Carlos Santana guested with the Stones at any point. Admittedly, the 1975 Tour isn't an absolute favourite of mine.

Well....likely not: George Harrison was using Boogie MK1 on his 1974 Dark Horse album, which incidentally features Ron Wood. Wood was using a Boogie amp backstage with the Faces, and there are pictures of a Boogie MK 1 on stage with the Stones in 1975, before the MSG gig with Clapton -at least, the stage is the normal stage, not the Lotus Flower stage, and Jagger is wearing clothing he wore during the first soundchecks and stage proofing. So, they knew of the amps before the Santana gig.

For the El Mocambo 1977 rehearsals and gigs Ian Stewart and Alan Rogan were looking for small amps to replace the way too large Ampeg stacks they were using -it is most likely that they simply went for the top of the line amp that all famous players were using at the time.

According to the interview I read he did, but they could have been aware of its qualities, like you say, of course.
