Have Stones fans become their parents?
Posted by: sweetladyjane ()

Wasn't Rock and Roll supposed to be about having ballz? To push the envelope and rock our world upside down for a time, and to f-ck with established views? Have the last 20-30 years made us so mainstream that we want to turn our rock idols into sacred cows?

Have the Stones taught you anything about life?

Yes, of course, but paternal cannibalism isnt what I call rock and roll.

That's a good topic, ladyjane.

A good topic, but not totally mastered in timin', imho.

Still, basic thing is: What now is echoed all around the world
about Keef... is not true. It has not happened.

I know it's only paternal cannibalism, but I like it *

Let's try to keep to the topic however! : )

Maybe to some, but to me it's just entertainment, and as such only a product . I consume rock n roll to shake my booty, and pleasantly while away a few hours. I don't buy-into it being anything much more than that. Of course, I don't necessarily feel like the "established views" were all that bad to begin with, and I quite like my parents.

Again, only my humble opinion, but I have to say absolutely not. They are certainly the best ever at what they do, but there are much more life-enlightening sources to be found elsewhere.

Yes.

They have been sacred cows since 1989.
They haven't been musically relevent in the way you're describing since 1981.
They are beyond mainstream, they are the establishment. Rock's Cash Cow.

Yes. You can be a bloated irrelevant juggernaut and still be entertaining. And as long as people buy tickets and records, you have every right to keep going. Stones shows are for the whole family now.

Have Stones fans become their parents?
Some here have become grumpy grandparents.

"Bah! That's not music! Kid's today don't know real rock'n'roll!"

LOL!

thanks for this thread, SweetLadyJane. some of the reactions to this Snort Story are so reminiscent
of the reactions back when some Stones got busted for peeing in that garage forecourt:
"ohh how dare they, how tasteless, that's indefensible!" damn right - it's the Rolling Stones!
and it's not for being tame, genteel and defensible that we love 'em.

so Keith Richards came up with a totally unexpected, outlandish and imprudent image
makin fun of his vampire reputation and of the media and the public who are so ready to lap it up
all these decades later - and all these decades later folks still take umbrage. i am charmed! i truly am.

"we are not old men - we don't care about petty morals."

They're lovable scruffies now. Happy fun picnic music. Nothing wrong with that. They're not dangerous or offensive anymore, they're pretty family-friendly.

In a way yes, but I think that is inevitable, but. even then, I cant see my old man throwing down 3 grand for a Bell Sound Acetate of NOW!....even if it does have outtakes not yet (or ever for that matter) bootlegged.

Does your ol' man even like the Stones, though?

Either way, laying that kind of cash for anything trite is not an 'age thing' though as much as a 'obsessive complulsive disorder' thing.

Well, my mom and my uncle, both Stones fans in the 60s, both thought ABB was noisy crap, whilst I think it may not be one of their best records, but it still got some great songs in there. So it's rather that the generation of parents likes the Stones of old, whilst the younger generation likes the Stones of today. That much about the demographic.

I'm not really sure what you mean...

As far as kids and the rap sh*t that they call "music" nowadays...

I mean, you call THAT music ?

But the worst thing is that they play it too f*cking loud.

Rock and Roll has grown up with it's creators and audience. Simple as that really.
It can still represent rebellion and fire if you want it to...but it's of little use to kids who who want to offend mum and dad these days...because they grew up with Keith Richards or John Lydon !

Yes it is the modern era...everything after 1976 is...Mid era, Mick Taylor, early era, Brian Jones...if you look at it, it makes sense....
