Hi everyone; in the past months you guys gave me the opportunity to download some great Stones live video footage!! I've also been using the RocksOff Torrenttracker.
I've downloaded something like 25 full DVD's, and now I want to burn them on DVD-R format. I read some articles about DVD/CD ROT. It seems that if you use cheap DVD's, there will be no bits/bytes left after 10 years; they've rotten away. What's the best brand of CD-R/DVD-R you should use to back up important information (Stones footage, private photos etc), so it will be intact a long time??? I've read that the Asian brands (like Fuji etc) seem to be the best (?). I usually use Philips DVD-R and CD-R. Are these good or bad??? What brand can I use best?

What I've been told is, it doesn't matter what brand you buy, but where it's made.

Try to buy CD/DVD's made in Japan. Like Fuji and Taiyo Yuden. You have to double check Fuji's, it seems like they moved a few plants to Taiwan, those are suppose to be inferior to the Japanese made.

I would love to buy only original discs but,most of the time,the prices are out of hand.I won't pay $80 for a two disc set of less than perfect sound quality unless I become filthy rich one day.$35 dollars seems like a more reasonable price.I do have a bunch of originals that I bought for around $50 but,the last one I bought was the Tokyo '06 Dog and Cat first version only to see it upgraded two weeks later.Since then it's been trading and torrenting.

Well, it was meant as a joke, I thought it was obvious.
Of course copying bootlegs doesn't kill music, and you're not supporting the music business by buying bootlegs.

This is true but,gold discs (usually made in Colorado or France) are even better.The Japanese Fuji's,Microboards,and Maxell Pro Series cdr's are made by Taiyo Yuden.Taiyo Yuden are the best mid-priced discs but,for a little more you can get gold discs which last quite a long time,especially if they are handled properly.Upwards of 250 years for a gold cdr & around 100 years for gold dvdr's compared to anywhere from 5 years to 25 years for other cdr's and dvdr's..

So what company's make the best gold cdr's?

fuji and memorex work just fine for me

Fuji TDK Sony and Maxell are fine

Memorex Phillips JVC next choice

Printable ones are usually difficult to see who made them ,I just bought some Memorex but can't see their name on the actual dvds

In 10 or 15years there proberbly have NO NEED FOR CD-R`s or DVD-R`s Due to some other Format??? So No Need to Worry about the Life of them?

The mid-priced brands that you all are mentioning do work fine,for the most part unless you get a bad batch .... at first.The thing is that they (1) won't last as long as many people would like them to and (2) are scratched\scuffed more easily.

Those companies don't make their own discs (except for maybe TDK and/or Imation [3M],I'm not sure about them,they used to at least).The rest are all made in the same few factories in Taiwan or Japan and then labeled with different brands.As Bingo posted,the ones from Japan are better especially the ones manufactured by Taiyo Yuden.You can't just say Fuji's are great,it depends on which Fuji's you get.I have had spindles that would work fine and a handful that would not work at all,both with the same name on the label.The ones that gave me problems were from Taiwan.Generic discs are sometimes made in other places such as Indonesia.I did my homework on this when I first bought a cd recorder.

Why worry about the life span?I prefer a longer lasting disc because,I would prefer not to lose the contents of my discs down the road.You can't transfer lost data to a new format.Once it's damaged or lost - that's it.It's piece of mind and one less thing that I have to worry about/deal with.The only sensible alternative to gold discs right now is two external hard drives for your computer using one for insurance to back up WAV (etc.) files.

Earlier in this thread,I posted a link to another recent thread.That thread has links for gold cdr's and dvdr's.From what I gather,there is not much,if any difference between brands.E-Film/Delkin Devices has a line that claims extra "Scratch Armor" protection.They are all top notch quality.

Vinyl is a dinosaur and I won't waste any investment in them. We live in a more compact technological world now. That is why film cameras are at the curb too. Its time to move on brother.
