Savannah is a beautiful city - Jacksonville is not so pretty.

Bill speaks of visiting Savannah in 1965 in his book - 2 nights before Keith dreamed "Satisfaction". He admired the beauty of the parks and trees. Oldest city in Georgia (1733). The Stones had played Statesboro, GA the night before. One of my friends' Dad drove the boys to the show. He said they were drunk as hell - some things never change!

Savannah is absolutely worth visiting. The fishing land outside of Jax used to be lovely but it's all been developed.

Great photo of RVZ by the way. That is a very true likeness. Some made him look like a drunken lout...part of the "image" Rudge encouraged.

I think Hand Of Fate from Knebworth is one of the Stones' best moments.

Today most rock bands would blow Stones off the stage, but I doubt that happend in 76. Hopefully one day we can see the proof?

Nonsense. Skynyrd were great ...but the Stones were....errm...the Stones.

Apart from anyting else, I don't think any other band could have woken up that huge knackered audience at that time of night... and held them for a set of that length .

I was there, and the probable reason that would've been written is partly because that (a) Skynrd finished their set with a truly blistering version of Free Bird, and (b) the Stones didn't get off to a great start, not helped as I recall by generator problems. But after Fool To Cry (can't recall how many songs into their set that was) they warmed up bigtime. I have the Melody Maker review up in my attic somewhere, haven't read it in 30 years, but I do recall one line from it ... "the night belonged to Keith Richards". I think the comment was in the context of lavish praise being heaped up on KR for fantastic work on Wild Horses.

Both bands were great, but it would be true to say that after people were still buzzing from Skynrd's Free Bird, the Stones found themselves with indeed a hard act to follow and initially didn't get off to their customary flying start, but that was in fairness largely to the fact that they kept losing their sound due to backstage generator problems.

From what I recall Freebird (the Lynyrd Skynyrd movie) is from Knebworth. Skynyrd played flawlessly and with passion.

By comparison, the Knebworth DVD of the Stones shows them as sloppy and a bit out of it.

I have this DVD. It musn't include the whole Knebworth set. Freebird is taken from another show (when they were support act to Peter Frampton). Allen Collins was incredible on this song.

Absolutely no way. LS were great but come on, I don't think anybody could blow away the Stones at that time. Zepp would have come close. But with that set list they could do no wrong. I remember standing there in disbelief as they did Route 66, Around and Around, Little Red Rooster, Stray Cat Blues, Dead Flowers, Let's Spend The Night Together Wild Horse and Satisfaction - songs that hadn't been on their 75/76 setlist. No one expected any of that.
To show how well they were received, the Stones didn't come on until really late and played until the eraly hours after which time all the trains had stopped running. I and thousands of other fans were stranded out in the Hertfordsire countryside and didn't give a damn as we'd seen the best band in the world deliver a great set, PA fvck ups included.

1974 Skynyrd ruled imho. Maybe an even game in 75.

I remember a great set from Lynrd Skynrd, but after a combination of too much sun and too much smoke I crashed out before the Stones eventually hit the stage..lol
