More than the new album - I am looking forward to Mathijs's review of the new album.

whereas there's been universal praise for WS - I don't think we're looking at a sequel of that fine album - after all, that was a decade and a half ago and its brilliance was more than just partially creditable to Rick Rubin (and I'll go out on a limb and assume Jagger didn't re-enlist his services here).

surprised you didn't like it, i think it's great, in terms of tunes, it's the production i don't like, but i think there are some really great songs on it

Well, rather have a Stones album but I do enjoy Mick's solo work. There are a few songs on his last album I don't like (Joy, and the techno one with Townsend) but the others are pretty good. And good for Mick if he wants to write new songs and make music, his drive is obviously very strong and he is not putting out an album to make money, he wants to write new music. Keith doesn't seem to have much motivation these days to write new stuff, which is a shame.

I just hope Mick takes the Dylan approach and makes something true to himself and earthy sounding. Don't go the trendy route and make something that tries to sound current.

A few thoughts:

So when did Mick pull this off durring the whole Bigger Bang album and tour cycle? Did he and Matt Clifford secretly lay down tracks in the Cambodian jungle when he was hiking last year durring the tour hiatus?

I would think it is much more likely that he is sitting on a bunch of Dogshit in the Doorway outtakes. And as somebody else mentioned, he could be polishing up bits here and there in a home studio / pro tools setup.

If you consider that the only really good song that came out of GITD was the B-Side Blue, an outtakes record might actually be something to get excited about.

I gotta admire this guy's working ethics. He seems to be a workaholic or something. He works his ass off every night in the tour to keep the band exciting and worth watching and perhaps even worth the money people spends on them - while his twin tries to remember the chords he once created, but mostly concentrates to freeride and look cool and enjoy the fruits of being a legend. While his twin spends his leisure time between the legs of tour getting sun at Caribbean, this guy - without telling anyone - decides to do a solo album. Meanwhile his partner is praised if he managed to look decent and keep an almost coherent speech at some celebrity party...

You speculations on all accounts are based on jack s#!%.

First of all, this is your opinion - a lot of people like GITD including myself. Second of all, there's no logic in this whatso ever - you can't base the quality of unheard stuff at all.

No doubt my hot-headed friend, all personal opinion and conjecture. Also, you are not the first person to suggest that I may be full of shit.

Different strokes for different folks, I celebrate the diversity of your opinion. However my Goddess-loving buddy, I humbly suggest the following homework assignment this weekend:

Invite some friends over
Stock up on your beverage of choice
Crank up: Exile + Some Girls + Wandering Spirit (bonus track: State of Shock)

Take a break and clean up the broken glass and spilled drinks from your raucous party.

Crank up: Primitive Cool + Goddess In the Doorway + Alfie Soundtrack (bonus track: Ruthless People)
Say goodbye to your guests (if the room isn't already empty)

Hey, Jann Wenner called GITD a 5 star masterpiece in Rolling Stone, so what do I know?

I can't wait! I'd love a Jagger tour, new band behind him, maybe he'll play Webster Hall again. I bet Charlie will not want to tour past Europe and as someone said, Mick will want to continue being active and vital! Go for it! He'll enjoy success and the fans will probably turn out MORE this time around, thinking if we can't see all of the Stones, Mick in the flesh is fine! BETTER THAN FINE for us DIE-HARD Jagger fans!

I don't mind Keith's stuff. His first album was much better. All of it is missing something though... was is it...

Oh yeah. Mick.

Another thing... cbtaco19,
I know how to entertain, thanks. If I'm bothering to crank ANY Stones at a party, I keep it between 1968-1981 with the exception of Wandering Spirit. Period.

No, at my parties I tend to bring out a little more adventurous stuff.

The News item says "...which is aimed to be released by the end of the year." Does this mean 1) Mick will wait until Europe Tour is over to release and/or 2) The new Mick disc has to be shopped around to find a willing record company?

Another couple questions cool smiley :

If this disc is not to be on Virgin (don't know the contractual details of the old deal), will a new contract coincide with a new Stones' label deal? Would anyone be very interested in releasing Mick-solo given GITD sales' figures?

GITD has sold 1,200.000 copies worldwide including 320,000 in U.S, 150,000 in Germany and 60,000 in UK.
The new album could break the million mark worldwide for sure.

The forthcoming Jagger disc may well be the final album on the Virgin record deal. So it might be a contractual obligation album, which I hope it's not. I hope it's going to be a great record. I hope the melodic "Everybody Getting High"s, "Blue"s, "Evening Gown"s, "Wired All Night"s, and "Out Of Focus"s will far outweigh the bland (Visions Of Paradise), and the monotonous (Think, Sweet Neocon - oh wait! that's a Stones tune ;-).

Since the news item says the album has already been worked on, it might mean that it was recorded during the Stones tour or during the Stones palm tree fall inflicted downtime. So maybe some of the band members other than Mick appear on it, like Ronnie (which I'd appreciate very much), Darryl, Chuck, Bernard, Blondie - though Keith and Charlie rather are unlikely because they'd turn it into a Stones record.

All in all, I think this is really good news. It's clever from Mick to fill up the rest of the contract or go round shopping for a new one with his solo record whilst the band is on a popularity high with the Scorcese movie in theaters.

Jagger's solo deal isnt linked to the Stones Virgin deal, if thats what you mean (unlike when they were on CBS, when the deal included an arrangement for Mick's first two solo albums)

Sad news indeed. I guess this means the Rolling Stones really are done after their last show at Wembley Stadium in London. Record contract done. Last tour dates of the final tour made up and finished. Career spanning film released. Mick already beginning--or more than likely also ending--his solo career on Capitol. How weird is that? He finishes his recording career on his own--which he always wanted anyway--and on the Beatles label. Mick has always wanted to be as successful as as a solo artist as the Beatles were individually.

The four will then vanish into obscurity--Keith and Ronnie a guest appearance here and there, Charlie at Ronnie Scott's every once in a while, Mick behind the scenes in the movie business.

It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Too bad they couldn't have done one last great Stones album while they were still playing together.

Very sad.

A solo album from anybody in the Stones at this point strikes me as a bad idea. They need to break this horrid habit of releasing new albums every 4 or 5 years, and Jagger needs to stop putting so much effort into his solo career, effort which could have been put in to ABB, while a good record, sounds a bit lethargic and failed to surpass Bridges.

But if this solo album will be released, Jagger can't keep doing this trendy stuff. Trendy music has gotten even worse since Goddess, which isn't actually a bad record at all.

Yeah unfortunatly it is staring to seem that way. If all this solo talk is true. There's no way they would do a stones tour and play solo stuff. Wembley could really be the last hurrah.

Couldn't video rewind be considered a career-spanning video of sorts also? I don't think it necessarily means the end. Maybe just the end of this tour. He's done solo albums before and tours have ended before, I would't read too much into it.

Re: new jagger album finished?

It's not the time to write them off at all now. It's just not possible in today's industry to promote an album and a film at the same time, because of the general prejudices that albums are meant to promote tours, and that theatrical releases of films are meant to attract secondary markets such as soundtrack CD sales, DVD sales and/or hiring etc.
Would it really be possible for the band to go ahead with telling the big distributor bosses that their marketing schemes are crap (which in some way they are) by promoting the movie with an album of new material that's not even in it, and then get signed on for a new record deal? Rather unlikely, I'd say.

So Jagger's move with this solo album is actually a good idea - both for business and for the listeners, because at least we're going to hear some new material (even though we might want to listen merely once, depending on how it turns out.)

I agree that "trendy music has gotten even worse". And it's rather unlikely that Jagger would put out a "Wind Up", a "Rudebox", a "Sexy Back" or a "London Bridge".
