keith can not play the dominant riff he once did that carried the groove and band, I can,t believe now he adds his chuck berry angular riffing to the song go and listen compare any 72/73 show to what you get now. he bends notes out of key.


you would think its an easy song to play in open g but not these days any more and RW can,t get warmed up by playing his two note solo.

TD is high-purity, high-power and high-grade song. TD is four nines.
You don't have to taste it out of the gate.

TD is a (IMHO boring) song to rest during a concert. Nothing full of energy to start a concert with. A Stones concert has to start with a rocker (except the Stones and their audience are to old to rock).

I noticed that Tumbling Dice was TAHT song during ABB tour, which opened the high-energy-level of the gig in the crowd. I don't know why, but it is really like this.
IMO, Tumbling Dice is a GOOD song, but not more and I don't need to hear it on every show - not at all as opener.

I once proposed them opening with the first part of CYHMK segueing into "Love Is Strong". They didn't listen.

In my opinion, Tumbling Dice was the opening song for the Voodoo Lounge tour. It typically was in the second slot behind Not Fade Away. I attended six VL shows and it was Tumbling Dice that got the crowd going. I think TD would be an excellent choice. It is a classic song from the band's most famous album.

Woah, woah woah...

Now I've had the same complaints about the guitar players for a while. THey mess up/water down a lot of songs. If there's one song which has been their saving grace on every tour, including ABB, Tumbling Dice is it. It's one song where I'm listening to Keef rather than Mick.

I think it would be a good opener although I really like it best as the 1st song of the closing string of classics. Correction-I mean somewhere in the middle of the closing classics. HTW should allways start them off.

I think you're right, despite the fact that, as for many gigs, the high energy level in the crowd had been opened by the first song! You wonder "Why?" Mmmmm... The song is good. Big parts of the audiences are growing up with it, they know it. And, despite the complaints here, Keith's work on it is good. I think the song works, but i prefer a fast rocker as opening song. Something like IORR, that, IMO, during ABB sounded clearly better than on previous tours.

Not an opener, the only good part is if it is short.

yes, TD would be groovy as an opener. IT worked well as a second song. It really gets the crowd going. Its really well known and hasnt been in the #1 slot yet. I think they really need to find a new opening song, No reason why TD couldnT be it.

yepp, something unsusal as opener would be great. The opening song gets attaion anyway and need therefore not to be a warhorse.

How about "Hitch Hike" or "Mercy Mercy" as an opener?

not bad to start with "you got to roll me", but I think they open with "the last time"

I agree, at some shows I attended the crowd got really into it first with Tumbling Dice. But I don't want it as an opener. I like the hard rocking songs with a kick ass Keith riff. Jumping Jack Flash is the ultimate opening song.

As most of you know, I think Tumbling Dice is positively orgasmic in its composition and execution. (Brussells Affair's version is probably my favourite Stones recording ever!) And it still kicks live! However, I don't see it as an opener. (People have copied me and suggested IYCRM and The Last Time in that position)

I think it would be GREAT as an encore, however. Really stretch out the coda as the horns come on and "roll" all night . . .

Tumbling Dice is one of the ultimate Stones live songs.
But I think it's too much of a backing-vocals-and-horns song to be played as an opening number. The same reason they don't open shows with All Down The Line or Bitch. Usually, it's just the four Stones plus Chuck and Darryl on stage for the first song.

Tumbling Dice was wasted in Hockenheim 2003 after that multi-guitars-Rock-Me-Baby-jam with the AC/DCs. They should have said: And now for something completely different and played Angie.
Yes, I know this thread is about Opening with TD but to me that song is gone since that day. And lots of other more fast numbers, too, they (mis)used to warm up the crowd (Live With me, You Got Me Rocking, eech since then!).

I've always wondered how "Fight" would do as an opener. Has that one ever been played live at all?
