Re: The Eagles - I strongly suggest you buy "Desperado" and "On The Border". These two really showcase their best writing and singing IMHO. Very countryish on Desperado and more rocking on OTB.

I'd really like to get deeply into Dylan and/or The Band. I have just a few by these guys.

Dylan and the Band?.... If you don't have it, get 'Before the Flood'. Great 1974 double-live LP showcasing great versions of classics by Dylan and the band, taking turns and jamming together.

R.E.M. I saw them in 93 or 94. Never bought a single disc. Maybe a good retrospective will pop up with their R@R HOF induction.

The first two albums were great IMHO ;-) (After that they sort of disappeared up their collective arses)

Freddie and The Queen......

....my son loves them, so I hear quite a bit ....and cannot decide whether I like them or not *lol*

I mean sometimes they do play some mean tunes...at other times it's just a waste of space ;-)

...but you gotta love Freddie...always over the top and beyond *lol*

Van Morrision sure is a "thread" to follow ....but if you're only starting out I'd avoid the last two or three albums and "...go back, way, way back, back to Hyndford Street....."

Lots of good stuff from both of these. The Beach Boys seem to be one of those "either you like 'em or you don't" type of groups. (I do.)

Van has so many great songs - I'd start with the "Moondance" CD and explore from there.

"Decade" a double CD with his best (?) songs, featuring comments by Neil on how he wrote the songs, and what they are about.
Was the first Neil Young CD I bought.

My problem is sort of the reverse...I own a lot of things I wish I didn't. lol

Up until recently, would have said Elmore James and/or Big Bill Broonzy, but took both of them off the list last weekend.

Lou Reed.

Speaking of Patti Smith...I highly recommend "Easter"! Amazing.

Until about a week ago I would have said Van Morrison, but I just picked up "Astral Weeks" and "Moondance".

5string - pick up the "And I Feel Fine" R.E.M. compilation - came out about six months ago and is a retrospective of their I.R.S. Records years ('82-'87). It's a great introduction to their earlier (and better) stuff, and for a couple of bucks more, get the 2-disc version, with more studio cuts and lots of live goodies, as well.

"Moondance" is an amazing LP. Everyone should own it.

Oddly, I don't own any chuck berry.

Josh.
