"Satisfaction" from Leeds 1971

I've always liked this strange version - the main riff is missing by either Keef or Mick T. or the horns. Noticed tonight that Charlie's opening sounds like the opening to "Time Waits For No One". Any thoughts?

Mo, I couldn't agree with you more. That song, and a few others that I could name that they've done live embody what it means to truly give a live performance. If we think of a song's potential, its pinnacle as being the recording that is cut on the record, then we should think of live performances as a chance to give the audience something new. If we wanted to hear Satisfaction played as it is on the album, all we'd have to do would be to listen to the album, not go to a stadium, theatre, or arena, and heard it played near-verbatim.

Artists should aspire to, in their "live" environment, experiment with, and play the song as differently (read: faster, slower, with completely different chord progressions) as possible. It should be seen as an opportunity to expand upon their talents, as well as the potential of a song.

I don't know about "completely different chord progressions"......there could be minor changes or they could do it in a different key. Maybe you could imagine a completely different chord progression for a song but I couldn't. It wouldn't be the same song for me.

Good points all, Frash. Why not breathe a little life into some of the warhorses by trying a little something different with them? Dylan certainly has done this.

Exactly - Dylan is the first that comes to mind with this kind of stuff. Obviously the one thing that has to remain the same are the lyrics. But just in how Satisfaction '71 is successful in that it is "anonymous" until the lyrics hit, so could new renditions of lesser-known songs, or take a stab at a dying warhorse (Miss You, anyone?) It could be as simple as reworking the arrangement, or as complex as trying a new key or different tempo. I think the best working example we have of a genesis over the years is 19th Nervous Breakdown.

The first song that came to mind when I was thinking of this was Live With Me.

That could be interesting.

Clapton's re-working of Layla is another example (for better or worse), but "Satisfaction"'s treatment in 71 was unique and very good IMHO.

IORR live is completely different from the studio version. May be more like Keith envisions the song now (Berryish), not the Ronnie/Mick/Bowie idea.

The Leeds version is one of the best. My other favorite is from MSG 69. I mentioned in other posts that I think on these versions, the stones are influenced by Otis' version of satisfaction- the way they do the tempo changes and ad lib lyrics in 69 MSG and add the horn parts on Leeds. I think they heard Otis's version and loved it- I remember Keef saying something about how the riff is a great riff for horns. It's as if they're doing otis doing the stones.I wish they did more treatments like this now.

This is definitely a way to make warhorses listenable again! Why not Country Honk instead of Honky Tonk Women!?
The Who made a slow Blues of My Generation decades ago. Or: Deep Purple always start at least one song in a "disguise" and the experts start guessing which song will develop.

I llove the '71 version, love it, love it, love it... This thread makes me happy. I've tried to get my band to play it this way. It's much funkier, just a great groove, one of the best things the Stones have done live, I think. Very much like the treatment of Get Off My Cloud on Love You Live. I wish the Stones had done this waaaaay more often. It's great when a band takes risks like that. You'll get one in ten that don't like it (see above), but overall you please your audience by giving them a new take on an old song. This one rocks!

One cannot hold a proper discussion of rock musicians exploring the potential of songs onstage without mentioning a group which has done so above and beyond anyone else mentioned in the thread so far. Actually, this band takes it a step further by performing not a handful, but ALBUMS filled with original materail NEVER recorded in the studio - only performed live. The group in question - The Grateful Dead. Another honourable mention - The Allman Brothers Band.

Not many groups out there compare with these two groups in the same way, before or since - and the Allmans are still doing this. They are the perfoect hybrid of technical brilliance and soul-stirring telepathy. In fact, they own caucasian live blues.

re: Dylans re-working of songs. I saw him 2 years ago and I really liked the way they did "It Aint Me Babe". It was a lot different from the version on the rolling thunder CD which is good too.

Dylan & the Dead - another reworked colllection of Dylan songs done live with a great band. Too bad it stinks like a bagged halibut.

Zappa did alot of re-working since his band was always in flux. The same tunes sounded different depending on who was playing at the time. I think its cool. Some songs change on their own and some get new nuances with new members.

I like this version of Satisfaction. I ve heard Dead versions a little slower than this with Weir singing. The usual jammed out Dead style, however, blusey.

Yeah your right on the money Elmo. I like the acoustic version of Layla.

The first time I heard that version of satisfaction I didn't recognize it at first. Then it started to grow on me. Now I love it. I think they should definitly try reworking some of the warhorses.

...and why not do "Country Honk" instead of HTW? It's a perfect vehicle for Keith and Ronnie's acoustic abilities and those useless backup singers to actually sound useful for a moment.

I like both versions but would have to go with MSG '69 because they left the riff intact.....they didn't play it from the same position though. I liked how Keith sort of chorded the riff and then turned it inside out at times....made it more funky. Both versions (plus the "Uptight/Satisfaction" medley) sorta recall the Otis Redding influence to me.

Satisfaction from Knebworth is a freighttrain with only one wheel on the track.

The 72 version is really really tight, not like the Kneboworth version.
If I only could keep 2 live versions of Satisfaction, I'll stick with MSG 1969 and Philadelphia 1972.

I've never been big on the timid yuppified unplugged 'Layla'. Gimme Duane Allman's soaring slide instead, please & thanks.

I'd like to hear a little bit of this version too.
Even a 30 second version would be nice.
