1. Not having a passport
2. Reluctance to travel more than 50-100 miles to see them
3. Being afraid of flying across the Atlantic
4. Backing the wrong horse by insisting every day that they wont tour

If I didn't go to any of the shows, I wouldn't be in any position to criticise them.

that argument doesnt really hold up, IMO

Someone could choose not to go because they werent impressed last time they saw the band (God knows why - the Licks shows were great! - but each to their own), because there's no shows anywhere near them (which would be the case for most of the planet outside North America and some parts of western Europe), because they were too expensive or because the only time they played nearby didnt suit for personal reasons. Theres lots of justifiable excuses.

And you can reasonably evaluate how good/bad shows are without going to them - even if youre not getting the full concert experience. I wasnt at Brussels or Wembley in 1973 or at any of the 1972 shows, nor were most people on this board, yet we can still justifiably comment on how terrific they are. It works both ways. If someone hears a recording of a ABB show and doesnt go because they dont care for how the band sound, thats reasonable enough. Better that they dont waste their money and it means a ticket for someone else who will hopefully enjoy it.

One Reason Why I WILL Go to a 2007 Stones Show

1. They're still bloody good.

What you say makes a great deal of sense and in essence, I would find it difficult to disagree with you.

However, using the radio broadcast of the ABB Glasgow show as an example, here is a Stones concert that for a great many reasons, is, in IMHO, utterly unlistenable, and I would never have dreamt in a million lifetimes, that I would ever have a reason to put those words together in a single sentence. Yet, from Jagger's dreadful vocals right through to the godawful wall-of-noise guitar mix, here was a Stones gig that even after severe editing, I could not bear to listen to again.

Being at the show itself however, offered a completely different experience. It was a fantastic concert, even in spite of an over-reliance upon warhorses. The upshot being, that the new Stones sound, even more so than that on the Licks tour, is infinetly better before actual live audiences, but, as such, does not lend itself very well to recordings. Even professional ones.

My point being overall, that had I not experienced them live, in the flesh, I'd have had a very distorted view of their current performances.

I'll be going again this time around, but if they're crap, I'll shout it out loud.

Yeah, the whole vibe of a concert cant really be adequately felt in a recording of it.

For what its worth, I was at the Glasgow show too and thought it was as good as any show I've seen on the last tour (being 4th row helped, it has to be said). I thought the broadcast was pretty good actually, but even though some here rave about it, it certainly didnt do justice as to what a fine gig it was.

I think you're right about the sound on the last tour, although I cant figure out why. At the shows, its far better than on Licks, yet at the same time, I much prefer listening to boots from the Licks tour, Maybe I just found the Licks shows more interesting musically and that overrides everything, I dont know.

hey i'm sorta kidding...aside from my opinion they should take the year off i have no idea and if BV says the tour announcement is coming i bet its coming.... so i'm not saying they are not going to tour....

but if they didn't tour that would be a reason not to go...

I flew across the pond last year to see them in London with high hopes based on the setlist changes for Europe. Unfortunately, I was at Twick #2, and only got Slipping Away as something I've not heard new before, while all the nuggests I'd been hoping for occurred at Twick #1. Then I flew to KY from upstate NY to see them at Churchill Downs, to get only Dead Flowers as the 1 song not heard before when I was so sure that I'd finally hear Wild Horses...

That said, I won't be making the trek to Europe or even anywhere in the US going forward because the spectacle may be great - it has always been - but the songs selection is boring and the tickets are outrageous. When I think of what I could have gotten done around our house with all that cash I gave the boys from 05-6 it still makes me sick.

So basically, I've been there and done that, and I'm not gonna shell out $400-$5000/show/trip anymore just for the prospect of only hearing one song never heard before. The justification no longer holds up.

Oh boy do I hear you, borther. That's what always pounds in my head as I'm standing in some huge crowd listening to "It's Only Rock'n Roll" or "Miss You" or "Sympathy" for the umpteenth time.

But here's the thing. Going to the Stones is always an opportunity for me to reflect on and revist all my favorite Stones records, not just the microscopic percentage they actually perform. And it's always an opportunity for me to hang out with pals with whom I've shared the band as a soundtrack for our lives.

Nostalgia act? Yeah, pretty much. But still strong enough and still forceful enough to bring their own incredible legacy to life for a couple of hours. And that's really sayin' something.

All of which means I'll probably shell out while admiring your discipline and restraint.

1. Lack of money.
2. Hate flying and no bridge/chunnel has been built from US to Europe.

That's it! Somebody else can use my other 8.

01. Cause they won't play where I live

But if they did, I would! In a heartbeat!

I am a teacher, and this is the week my students have to take the standardized tests. While they have been testing, I have been compiling information to back up my reasoning to not spend $ to see the Stones, even if they played in my neck of the woods...

I have seen them 8 times, and of those shows:JJF, HTW, IORR, Brown Sugar, and Tumbling Dice were played at ALL 8 shows. That's approximately one third of the setlist for EVERY SHOW. (Yes, I am a math teacher!)

On average, they have played 4 songs per show that I only saw that one time. That's approximately one fifth of the setlist.

The most expensive ticket I ever bought was my ticket for the Licks ('02)Boston show... I spent $150, which was, at the time, about one third of my paycheck.

These factors will affect my decision as to whether or not I will see the Stones again!

Awesome post!!!

I love Mr. Magoo - ROAD HOG!!!

BTW, I didn't forget the safeword (it's Popcorn, right?) I was just following through with my theory that men love rape. Don't worry I'll be gentle.

Oops... I messed up on my math!! The first bit of my post was supposed to say one FOURTH of every setlist, as there were only 5 songs listed there, not 8... Bad math teacher.
