LEEDS '71: One of the best bootlegs around?
Posted by: mrrockandroll ()

Allright, Brussels Affair is definitely one of the best Stones bootlegs around; the sound is magnificint, and they are on fire! So there's no doubt about that.

I also noticed that a lot of people on the web also note Leeds '71 as one of the best Stones bootlegs. Is that right?? Is it really that awsome?? What do you all think?? I haven't listened to it yet.

I would agree for a variety of reasons overall. Besides, Let It Rock is there.

Very good sound, the classic live lineup, great setlist, but I dunno I always felt like the performance is a little lacking in energy. Keith is very on, might be his best Little Queenie and his Let It Rock solos are insane.

Great boot, but IMHO doesn't quite stack up to the best.

EDIT: Oh also, missing a couple of songs.

Yes, it's a must have. The sound quality is terrific and it's the band at the end of its still "small" period. Taylor playing on DF and LIV makes it vital. And there's a very funky Satisfaction. They don't experiment like that anymore. I've seen written by someone that '70-'71 was the band at its best. It's not worth arguing about, but I understand the point.

It's a very enjoyable and entertaining show. It feels like a shaky 69/72 hybrid (if you know what I mean). Hearing the Sticky Fingers songs introduced as 'new' is cool. Stray Cat and Love in Vain are better here than on Ya-Yas.

I love the ambience of this show. It has a loose, relaxed feel to it and the performances of Let It Rock and Satisfaction are among my favorites. It's a pity that a complete recording has not circulated or indeed a complete, quality sound board from this tour hasn't as well. The lost tour indeed!

first bootleg I bought, I find it pretty sloppy and not all that great.

From what I've read, a lot of shows on that tour were pretty lousy - Leeds was apparently one of the better ones.

Another thing that makes this bootleg so good is that Ian Stewart's piano is so easy to hear and listen to; just listen to Little Queenie! The boot has a very "real" sound to it.

Agree 100%. It's a much more intimate show than what were used to hearing on 69 or 72. Leeds is much better that Marquee club show from the same year overall. I think the midtempo songs are the stongest here HTW, LQ, SCB, DF. BItch is great. MR gets a good workout but the last 90 seconds never really takes off like were used to hearing from 72/73. They do Satisfaction like the OTis Redding cover- it's one of my favorite versions along with MSG 69. If I were putting together a boot collection I'd put it in the top 10.

Let it Rock alone makes this boot an absolute must IMO

First bootleg I ever heard. Blew my mind at age 10.

You beat me, I got it at 12...from a writer of a Stones book, whom I wrote to.
Brussels 73 and Leeds 71 in the mail, that was a good day.

You're right on both accounts.

I've heard people talk about what a great performance this is but it's not......not in my opinion anyhow. It's not bad by any means but they could do better. The reason this boot is so popular is because of the sound. It's a great soundboard recording of what is probably a decent performance. I suppose it depends on what you're comparing it to though.

Never been a favourite of mine. I don't like the clean sound, and I find the Stones really lacking in energy. The Roundhouse show is so much better!

Energy-wise, it beats the frantic coked-out screaming of the '72 tour. But I like the '72 tour. They do sound every so slightly desultory on this.

I agree that '71 had a cool intimate and laid back club feeling -- at least on the boots (all I know about) -- but I also agree with Mathijs that Leeds '71 is lacking a bit, and the Roundhouse '71 sounds better energy-wise.

Speaking of Lost Tours, one of my holy grail's has always been a clean SBD recording of Roll Over Bethoven from Europ '70. All the boots I've heard from that tour are beneath my enjoyable-listening threshold.

One of the first boots I ever got many years ago. I love it. I love the reworked version of satisfaction. They should try that these days. the only drawback is that the crowd seems real subdued.

No way LIV is better on Leeds than YaYa's.

Agreed, it runs to slow, and lacks the "sad blues-feel" of Love In Vain of GYYYO.
But Stray Cat Blues surpasses GYYYO, that's true.

Has the bloke yelling Paint It Black, anything, anything! ever come forward to collect his royalties?

Well, some call it "sloppy" some call it "cool". Maybe they were just riding high then and enjoing it. But I can see your point. When I first heard it, I also sensed something limp/loose there, before I really got into it.

I particularly like the Chuck Berry section, Love in Vain and Midnight Rambler. As for the remaining tracks, it might be just a matter of perfect sound - everbody loves a perfect recording!

Even though the overall sound is somewhat understated, with very litte atmosphere, I'd certainly put it among the Stones best bootlegs. It's almost an antidote to Ya-Yas.

Dead Flowers and Rambler alone, are worth the price of admission.

huh?

I don't think he says "Paint it Black, anything anything!"

If you're talking about Ya Ya's (they slipped it into Flashpoint too, I swear), then he says "Paint it Black you Devils!"....

Enjoy this one because it is soo different.

Jagger Fan made a good point about it being a "shaky hybird" of '69/'72.

There's a guy shouting "Paint It Black, Paint It Black, Paint It Black, Paint It Black" before Let It Rock at the Leeds 71 bootleg.
