Here's another great Drummer I thought was already mentioned.
Jerry Mercer from April Wine.
His solo's are amazing!

"White drummers don't swing, except for Charlie" That's very true.

Mr. Charlie Watts!!! Nobody even close.

Four pages and no one has mentioned Hal Blaine. He's on more songs you know than you can possibly imagine.

Ït's impossible to tell who is the best. When it all comes to all, it's about how they function in the band: Keith Moon, a fantastic drummer, would never work well in the Stones - and visa versa with Charlie and The Who. Same thing with guitarplayers. To play in a band is to play on a team. It doesn't matter how good you are individually, it's how good you are togehter with the band that counts.
Stones would have been nothing without Charlies groove, and his style fits perfectly with Keith Richard's guitarstyle. Remove Keith and Charlie, and the unique sound and groove of the band will dissapear. All the great rock drummers got something unique in one way or antother to their playing, and therefore I think it's hard to tell who's the best. Who is best - Picasso or Da Vinci?
Having said that, there's no doubt Keith Moon, John Bonham, Ian Paice, Dave Grohl and Bill Ward are among the greatest drummers in rock history.

John did use two bass drums before and during the very early stages of led zep.

I read somewhere that he also used a single bass drum but with a 'doubler'? from circa 1972 onwards.

whoever that guy was on runaround sue and the wanderer...all those flams and rolls; really quite distinctive... and such a swinging hot rockin' beat...
i've heard dion in interviews but don't remember the guy's name...dion was saying he was this 21 year old skinny italian kid from the bronx and the session players were all older black guys...they made some amazing music...

some of the most memorable moments in my life were watching buddy rich on the ol' johnny carson show...he was mind blowing...he'd just go solo on the kit for several minutes...and then the big band would come in at the end to some ultra souped up hot arrangement...that carson drummer ed o'shaugnessy would be playing along with the rest of the big band, and buddy would be exploding like gene krupa or keith moon all throught it...hitting every emphasis hard and perfect...(incredibly hot and sophisticatedly smooth but punchy horn arangemnts,) all at the same time rich is going off like crazy firework show...mind blowing.

everybody great i can think of has been mentioned already...except maybe dino danelli of the rascals...i try to throw him in every few months when this thread comes around.

Ginger Baker on Sunshine of your love.......that's hard to top, but I agree with the guy who said, a band is a team, and it's like comparing apples to oranges, all mentioned are unique, but at the end of the day...who cares? rock and roll is being overanalyzed, bang that drum Charlie!!!

I've seen many I love (and many others I like less) like
Bill Ward
Carl Palmer
Bill Brufford
Chester Thmpson/Phil Collins
Abe Laboriel Jr
Ian Paice
Carmine Appice
Billy Cobham
Alex Acuna

But the only two that really blow my mind are

Bonzo and Nick Mason.

Charlie I love to much to be really fair. I even love the blue socks he wears.
