one thing to keep in mind when naming 'best drummers', is that there are many amazingly good drummers ie. john bonham, moon... on and on and on.
one thing to keep in mind though is that you can't really anazlyze a drummer away from their band too well.
i think charlie's style compliments the stones as a band very well, but would john bonham work in the stones? i'd love to hear it, but i cant see it working as well as with charlie.

would neil peart have worked in the beatles?

i can name a big list of amazing drummers, but to rank them is silly, you can't say one is better than another overall, you have to take a lot of factors into consideration.

That's Keef's famous quote from back in the day.

He must have said that before seeing Tom Ardolino of NRBQ.

Been thinking % re-watchin' Stonefunkers & I notice
they have several drummers, various 'skin'colors.
But the band in itself is a good example on white dudes that swing.
Gee, I miss these guys.

Wow,
So many great ones out there, how can one decide?
You all have named most of the great ones, but I think two names that deserve to be on this list are:
Prince & Sheila E.
I know there not the typical rock drummers but they do ROCK!

If I had to pick one drummer, it would be Chad Smith. He can play anything & does live in concert.

I do not think that Stewart Copeland has been mentioned in this thread and he certainly deserves to be.

Bonzo
Charlie
Simon Phillips
Sly Dunbar

But I agree with the point that there is "best" from a purely technical standpoint and then "best" as in---fits the band best. Two different things, really.

I agree with you on Mick Fleetwood Beeley. I think he does tend to get missed in the discussions of great drummers. But mick has done it alot of years in a lot of different styles. I love to hear him play.

1. Buddy Rich (not really a rock drummer as we know that style of music, but clearly there is Nothing he couldnt do on a kit))
2. John Bonham (base pedal alone)
3. Neal Peart
4. Ronnie Tutt (Elvis Presley's Drummer)
5. Phil Collins ( His Jazz Fusion stuff was incredible)
6. Max Weinberg (E Street Band)
7. Antog Figg ( David Letterman, Ace Frehley, etc..)
8. Simon Phillips (Pete Townsend, The Who 1989 Tour)
