I've read a lot the debate over best front man and guitarists, but what about the drummer? And I apologize if this has been debated in the past...in your opinion, who is the best drummer ever in Rock? I would go with Lars Ulrich followed by Tommy Aldridge.

The drummer is a guy who gets to hang out with musicians.

to debate the best drummer is often futile because it is rare that a drummer is that distinctive in thier individuale sound.

I SAID RARE not impossible so pickers of nit remember that before your inevidable attack.

I think it takes a certain basic talent to play drums, but as long as you stay in time, you normally don't stand out. I think this is why Watts does not get the wide amount of credit he deserves. He stays RELENTLESSLY in time but rarely stands out in a tune (that is in the public opinion... IMO he has a very distinct sound and is the best, but I have listened to A LOT of Stones)

I think SOME drummers have a very distinct sound

Of course, if you're going to ask any real drummer, Neil Peart is going to make the list; but I doubt most Stones fans would know who he is.

And if you are to disregard anything else he's done, Phil Collins is another which can't be overlooked.

To celebrate the tenth 'best-drummer' thread since I've signed-on here, I would like to decorate this special edition with the honorable mention of Cesar Zuiderwijk, the Golden Earring. fast and precise like a metal-drummer, very distinctive and 'poresent' as a rock-drummer (with amazing solo's) and soulful, almost non-existent as bluesdrummer. In his drumming, the guy does absolutely have no 'ego', he just provides each dong with the right treatment.

Collins can't be over looked as a pop-star, but as a drummer he certianly can be.
Don't get me wrong, I actually like much of Phils discography I just don't think it is his drumming skills that made him a household name. It was not until he started singing for Genisis and then his solo stuff that he became a relevant force in music.

NOW ON TO PEART
This over-rated dingleberry has been playing in that aweful Rush for years and I can't even remember what he looks like

I HATE RUSH and in every damn drummer discussion in the world he comes up. It is possible that if he had played in a good band I would think of him differently... but probably not... he is too show-y for my taste.

and the band RUSH is the most souless and sexless and boring band I have ever been forced to listen to. DAMN THEM TO HELL, they are now and always have been LAME!


with all that said... I am aware that I am in a rock-n-roll minority with my Rush hate... BUT no matter THEY STILL STINK

i can pretty much go with marv on the whole rush thing...

Phil's drum work in Genesis is/was great but his work in Brand-X was magic!

First off - Thank you Radio Marv for all you say about Rush and Peart.

I do think Charlie is one of the best. Biased or not, he just is a badass.
I like white drummers like DJ Fontana and Ronnie Tutt (he played w/ Elvis' live band in 68), black drummers like Jabo Starks, Clyde Stubblefield, Melvyn Parker, Stevie Jordan.
A straight ahead white rock drummer is Prarie Prince from the Tubes.
Chad Smith from the Peppers is great.
There are so many: it's like Charlie has his offsprings in Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick), Paul Thompson (Roxy Music),Jerry Nolan (NY Dolls).
Then the more busy, fluid drummers from the Prince school Ian Paice who predates all of them, Clem Burke (Blondie), Matt Sorum (Guns 'n Roses) and Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction).
Sly Dunbar influenced Topper Headon (Clash).
Then there are some of the more arty drummers who kick butt: Steven Drozd (Flaming Lips) and Phil Collins. Easy to forget that when Collins was nothing but a drummer and BU singer behind Peter Gabriel in Genesis he was a motherf*cker.

There is John Bonham way atop the list, by a mile, then there is everyone else, imo. He was far and away the best. I mean each to his/her opinion, but John Bonham was just fantastic, had finesse, volume control and power like nobody else ever. He never used a double kick, ever!! BUT he played those couplets like nobody can. His playing was beautiful.

I'd say Ringo and Keith Moon also contributed hugely to their bands' sounds, as does Charlie, of course, and a number of other drummers mentioned.

Any drummer with jazz training has a giant advantage in R+R, and Bonzo's heros were the jazz greats. Dust off your LZ DVD's, and just watch Bonzo. It is snowing up here in the Northeast today, a great day to laze about and watch Bonzo!

IMO the top two are no longer with us - Moon The Loon and Bonzo. Add the late Al Jackson to that list of great dead drummers.

but of living drummers I've always liked Clem Burke

Topper Headon and Charlie too, of course. Ronnie Tutt, Jim Keltner as well.
