I like Woody on Out of Tears. Also, Clapton on the live in the studio Brown Sugar in 1971 is tasty.

not in any order:

jeff back's "Nadia", anyone? crazy middle-eastern modalities and precision landings...

gilmour above the frets on the spazzy section of Shine on You Crazy Diamond

steve howe, also above the frets on "and you and i" and "soon"

skynyrd's remake of haggard's "honky tonk nighttime man"; gary on dobro

taylor on brussels' '73 midnight rambler

sneaky pete on 'torn and frayed"

How about these:

George Harrisons killer slide on Lennons "Gimme Some Truth"
Ronnie Wood on the Faces "Thats All You Need"
Johnny Winters "Highway 61" from the live Dylan 30th Anniversary show
George Thorogood 'Who DO You Love"

Maybe not "best", but one of my all-time favorites is from "Physical Graffiti": Page's workout on "In My Time of Dying". The live version as featured on the Led Zep DVD is awesome, too.

Love George Harrison's slide on everything he did. Some notable mentions have to go to:

Free as a Bird...searing and emotional slide

Cloud Nine-dual slide onslaught...great live with Clapton

And How Do You Sleep!!!! Vicious song with a vicous slide on it.

other mentions..
Motherless Children-Clapton, especially live off his current tour! Man three guys playing the same slide part, packs a whollop of a punch

Hound Dog Tayler- The Sun is Shinning

Has anyone ever heard the live Around the Plynth/Gasoline Alley medley by the Faces? Ronnie's slide solo is incredible, and the overall performance puts bands like the Who and Led Zeppelin to shame. (Its on the Faces box set, highyl reccomended if you don't have it).

Agree with Rockman that Dark Was The Night by Blind Willie Johnson is the ultimate in the slide guitarist's art. Makes the hairs on the back of the neck go up, y'know. All his stuff is wonderful.

In classic acoustic blues there's the wonderful Son House. Also Bukka White.

For all-out no frills joyous down and dirty electric slide, my favourite is Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers. Check out their first album on Alligator "Genuine Houerockin' Music" or the posthumous live album "Beware of the Dog". MMMMMmmmmmm....

So many that I had forgottne. "In my time of dying". Since I saw Howe mentioned on "And you and I" and Sneaky Pete on Torn and Frayed" which are both Pedal Steel, we should mention Robert Randolph too. he tears it up live.
One guitarrist who often surprises me is John Lennon. On Slide too.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Speaking of George Harrison's slide playing,
my favorite of his was The Lord Loves the One (That Loves the Lord)
from the Living In The Material World album.
It's probably the best slide solo he ever did.
Another beautiful slide solo of his is from Your Love Is Forever
from the George Harrison LP from 1978.
Funny, after the Beatles broke up, he hardly played anything but slide guitar.

Some good arguments made but, For my money, the topic starts with Duane A. and ends with Derek T.

Full circle within one band. Amazing really.
