OT: The Police Tour
Posted by: DGA35 ()

They announced an additional show in Vancouver and Montreal after the original dates sold out. Vancouver show sold out within minutes, which is pretty amazing. They're playing GM Place, which holds just under 19000 for hockey and is right across the street from BC Place, where the Stones finished up their tour. Bell Centre in Montreal holds around 21000 for hockey.
I'm not that surprised that the shows sold out, but I am surprised at how fast tickets went and that additional shows were added on. Wonder how ticket sales in other cities will do.

They timed it right. It's the middle of friggin' winter. Not much going on. People suffering from "cabin fever" and desperate to be entertained. I'm amazed, sometimes, at just HOW desperate people are.

What I mean is that if they had waited until April to put the tickets on sale, they would be competing with all the other big summer tours. Putting the tickets on sale now, when nothing else is going on, makes Police tickets look pretty good. Not only that, but by selling tickets now, they have all your money sitting in bank, earning interest, while all you have is tickets for concerts that won't take place for another four or five months.

i hear you..but i think this is the tour of the year..this will sell out everywhere regardless of when tickets go on sale..

there's plenty of 30somethings like me that always wished hey had seen them and never thought they'd get the chance...

at least thats my impression..i hope i'm wrong as its going to make getting a ticket very expensive and difficult

Yeah, tatters, the Stones/Cohl have mastered this (collecting interest on our money). Still, the Police will deliver with a good show.

I hate this business of putting tickets on sale 6 months or even a year before the concert takes place. Back in the day, tickets would NEVER go on sale more than two months in advance. Any band that makes a "Give us your money now, and at some time in the very distant future, if no one gets sick or dies, we will entertain you" deal is obviously behaving in a criminal manner because they are not fulfilling their part of the contract within a reasonable amount of time. Not only are you paying for a show you're not going to get to enjoy for a long, long time, you may not even get the show you paid for. In 2002 I paid $450 for a pair of 3rd row Who tickets, and by the time the show took place, five or six months later, the guy who should have been standing right in front of me, playing the bass, was instead thousands of miles away, decomposing in an English graveyard. It was still a good show. I would even go so far as to say it was still the Who. But it wasn't the show I had paid for. I know these guys are all in the "drop zone" where anything can happen at any time, but the chances of such a fiasco taking place would be greatly reduced if tickets didn't go on sale so far in advance.

So much for the "naysayers" who did not think there would be anything close to sufficient interest in this tour. More or less ends that debate.......

This tour is going to be huge--they have a catalogue of great tunes and the Grammys proved they still have the musical chops.

2 shows at the Garden, August 1 and 3---think those tickets will last more than a day? More than 1/2 a day? More than an hour?

I agree that it is a neat to put tickets on sale months in advance, but it clearly, is now part of the biz.

Didn't Entwistle pass away on the eve of the tour--like within a week or two? I seem to remember that but not sure, if it was close then the question of timing of the ticket sale probably did not enter into it.

Yeah I hate that, when they put tickets on sale so far in advance. You wait and wait for a good show to come to town. Then they all come at once. Right now I got tickets for four different shows up on my 'frig. 2 of them next weekend. Two more on the same weekend in March..
I am also suprised The Police sold out so fast. I am still waiting to see where they are playing and hopw much they will charge. If it's a stadium I'll probably pass.

Yeah I think Entwistle died literally days before the start of their tour.

That was my recollection SCL--in fact I thought it was kind of, I don't know what the proper word is.."disrespectful" or maybe "unseemly" but I suppose the show must go on....particularly when there is all that money at stake.

Oh there is no doubt about it. No matter how Pete & Rog tried to defend it. It was extremely poor taste to continue the tour. Espicially with little or no delay from what I remember.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

AS much as I would like to see The Police, I will chose to remember the way I saw them in the early 80's. I'm sure the DVD from the upcoming tour will be stunning and cost far less than parking at a show.

Thanks SCL--that's what I was looking for--"poor taste".

And I think you are right about the no delay.

As for the Police--read that Sting, as part of his inducement agreed to split the tour proceeds evenly (apparently that had not been the case previously) and give Andy and Stewart input on the set list. The latter "concession" is good news, especially for us fans of Stewart Copeland's drumming.

I think I heard they are also donating some of the profits to charity. Sting being the big environmentalist he is.

25 cents a ticket??

Sure, at least it's something. Jimmy Buffett's tickets say that something under a dollar goes to a charity. No biggie to him considering his performance guarantee is 103%. Yes, he gets 100% + 3% of the local venues parking and concession profits. He sells out every ticket no matter what size venue he plays usually within a couple hours so venues and promoters are glad to give him 3% despite making ZIP on ticket revenue.

Wow--those "Parrot Heads" are some seriously dedicated fans.

Personally, I don't get it, but different strokes...

So much for the show's being sold out. I just went to ticketmaster and could have just purchased ticket's to both show's including opening night in BC. I don't think there was to much naysaying,i do remember people saying it would blow there mind if they sold out multiple stadium's,which i still think will be hard for them. These are only arena's and there not sold out. It's all about the hype for promoter's and ticket broker's right now. Time will tell,i'm still sticking to my gun's about the stadium's.

I would'nt spend over a hundred dollar's to see the police that includes all the fun with it beer's,parking,etc... I'd rather save my money and finish what i started in 05 and see the Stones in Europe this summer if it happen's.

Fair enough. But why, then would you take such an active interest that you are making phone calls to check ticket availability? Why care?

The fact that they are adding shows would certainly seem to suggest they are doing a fairly brisk business. And, yes, it is not a stadium (Thank God) but it is also the exact same venue the Stones played.

Like i said time will tell. They say it's sold out but it is'nt bottom line! I'm am interested because it will blow my mind if people are stupid enough to pay outrages prices for a band that has'nt existed in 25 year's,with no new material to boot. If they had a album to tour behind i would probably be more inclined to the subject, and possibly go see them. I saw them in LA in 81 good show nothing stunning though. Even though i got to second base that night with some stunning chick i did'nt even know that was cool right in the middle of the show.

I agree it would be much much better if they had made a record.

Well, sounds like you should have fond memories of the '81 show.

Yea music aside, Right when the police went on i just grabbed this beatiful chick and started kissing her for the first 2 song's,that's what southern comfort did to me in those day's plus the fact i was only a sophmore in high school. Hey it was a good show but nothing to the phenominal stage.

If that had been me...the girl would have slapped me in the face, then the "uniformed" police would have thrown me out and I would have had to go to
school the next day and try to explain the entire debacle.

O c'mon slide you never got drunk,in your youth, and said, c'mon Baby do you want to party with Elvis tonight! Then it was on!

Well, I certainly mastered the first part of that equation in my high school days... but no , never downed a bottle of Southern Comfort and started making out with a total stranger at a concert. That didn't happen, unfortunately. Had a nice girlfriend who would have done about a shot and a half of SC and been sick the rest of the nite---lol And--her dad was a cop--no lie.
