"It Won't Take Long" kicks serious arse.

I like ABB and wish they would play more live. But none are classics. RJ is the best (although not the most creative) but to give it a 8/10 would be generous. I have my favorites (LMDS, WTL, BOMH, LIND, LWTCDI etc) but these are 7s (or less). As pointed out some songs take awhile to become classics. I love B2B much more than I did 9 yrs ago. Will be interesting to see if ABB can age as well (i am not expecting that but who knows)

You have got to be shitting me.

For my money "It wont take long" is the hidden gem. What an awesome guitar intro. Plus great drumming, chorus and guitars. And its a bitter-sweet little thing lyrically. Quite dark. Oh and Ronnies solo is pretty tough!

why cant you just type the names of the songs out because even though some of the songs mentioned are some of my favorites ever, i still cant work out what your talkin about.

or if you prefer:

WCUJTTNOTSOBETSOTSMASOMFE, ISCWOWYTA.

Laugh, I Nearly Died would have been better on a Jagger Solo record.
It was featured on the TV show "Supernatural".

It almost a has a true outro, too!

It's not bad. I like that, Rain Fall Down, and maybe two or three more are OK.

"Shitting you," eh? Um, no. The track is every bit as ballsy and flat-out, actually; a perfectly apt comparison. But since you have endorsed both Pink Floyd and Dave Matthews--on this board, no less--I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time trying to figure out how you look at things.

Dig, boy?

Nice Steadman, though...

It's a wonder why the Stones even try to put out new stuff when they have "fans" who say stuff like this.

I agree. "Rough Justice" is great. It is catchy as hell and fun to listen to. It carries a huge punch jammed in to a 3 minute song. Played live---simply didn't do it. If I only heard it live I never would've liked the song. The studio version is to me, the best and ONLY rocker after "Start Me Up."

Probably their last "hit" was Start Me Up. If you go to a Stones gig in 2012, there will be no song what so ever from an album made 1983 or later, well maybe You Got
Me Rocking that Keith is trying to shift into the "classics" may be in the set list. That is sad in my opinion. ABB had lots of really strong songs like Back Of My Hand.
If they would make up half of the 22 song gig from Woodoo, Bridges and Abb plus a few 70's songs plus a few 60' songs...... well ya know what I mean

I've listened to the album again now the "outtakes" were released. After 2 years, I find Biggest Mistake, Dangerous Beauty, Looked What the Cat Dragged In, This Plac is Empty and especially Driving To Fast are the really goo tracks. All other songs quite forgettable in my opinion. Driving Too Fast truly is a classic in my opinion, I think this is one of the best songs of the last 20 years.

a good thread that will have me listening again with more attention...for me tho, up till now, (and also right off the bat,) i really liked rj; came on lethal...i know it's not ground breaking lyrics but it's rough rock 'n roll and i fell for it...and i still do. look what you can do with two chords...for me lmds is just wonderful...it may be true it's 'by the numbers' sorta...
for me that dosen't matter...around the generally mutually agreed upon super great albums, there seemed a formulaic approach also to me...and actually that was part of their reliability for me...a r&b tune, a blues, some rockers and a ballad sorta...i know it's poppy, but lmds is a magical number for me. i just don't get why people wouldn't totally love the guitars in that one...a total winner...the groovy weave at last...and if they had released it as a single they woulda had one of them there 'hit singles' cross genre...
so rj and lmds, i dunno 'bout the third one yet...there are a couple of candidates actually, (one loping bluesy thang that sounds like it could have been on exile) i'd say much better than the last several studio releases, excepting voodoo which had a healthy handful i really loved...i don't think abb is as great album...i found it hard to listen all the way through frankly...and i had anticipated greatly and bought it the day of release...listened to the first two and got real excited...then i sort of lost interest...
...but i absolutely think they are still capable of coming up with something spectacular pretty much all the way through...(when they write less self-conciously they are more prone to really nail one i think)...the more an album is a calculated thing, a "job," let'say...i think they tend to go through the motions with the writing sometimes. if they don't have all top notch songs, they should do a cover...i know it'a not popular, but i liked 'ain't too proud to beg' for example.
so my tastes are strange...i think 'country honk' is a dang classic...
and 'all sold out' and 'my obsession' and 'around and around' and.....

I think "This Place Is Empty" is a classic. Catchy, nicely written - one of the best Keith ballads. For a rocker I'd go with "Rough Justice" - if not "Brown Sugar"/"JJFlash" league I would at least rate it with, say "Crazy Mama" or "Respectable". And last, I have always been very fond of "Let Me Down Slow". It's a catchy little sorta-twangy number and the first time I heard it I felt like I was hearing the voice of old friends.

a good thread that has successfully reminded me why i haven't listened to ABB in months - and will continue to keep it along with GHS and Dirty Work in my "ignore" pile . . .

I think Under The Radar comes the closest---classic Stones riff/groove and great vocals by Mick. While I like ABB, nothing really jumps out as "classic" Rolling Stones.

Not sure there has been a "classic" since Start Me Up. Maybe Love Is Strong.

Love is Strong would surely qualify. as would a handfull of others: she was hot, undercover, tie you up, all the way down, too tough, almost hear you sigh, mixed emotions and moon is up come to mind right away.

don't stop is up there as well . . .

I like all those songs, not sure they qualify as "classics".

i translate Latin, so i think i'm as qualified as they come . . .

Oh well, in that event.......lol

I am not certain "Too Tough" is a classic in any language....maybe "pig" latin....

sorry, that may have been a 'transcription' error.

what about Too Tight, in that case? that's close to classic status, methinks . . .

how do you say rock-n-roll in latin??

Re: 3 classic songs on ABB

LOL

Don't get me wrong--I really like Too Tough (would have liked more w/o those electric drums--ugh), but "classic"?

Perhaps "close" is a compromise.

"how do you say rock n roll in latin?"

silex et tripudiare

She saw me coming,is the best song on ABB.

Re: 3 classic songs on ABB

People need to tell me what they hear in She Saw Me Coming, because all I hear is one cheesy riff played over and over and over again. For three minutes. With terrible lyrics. I can barely listen to the whole song (but am inflicting it upon myself as I type, just to be sure, and it still sucks).

i'm going to get buried under a barrage of sh*t for this: but when have the stones ever been consistently good lyricists, really in the grand scheme of things?

and secondly wait 10 yrs ABB will sound much better then!

ps- I'm with Gazza all the way, with regards to this album (LOL)

Well,if nothing else. It certainly is the best thing they've done in the last 10 years. Studio wise.

What I see is that between all the posts here there has been a push made for every song of the album as being a classic. (except for the dreadful Neocon of course LOL). I'm not sure exactly what that says abotu this album, but it is something.
"Let me down slow" ALWAYS reminds me of the Prince song "Take me with U".

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."
