I would say that the Stones let the people bring into agreement with their reputation as "greatest Rock'n Roll band" by massive ticket-sales and album-sales over decades. That's why, I say: NO

Overrated? C'mon! We're talking the Rolling Stones, not Coldplay! THE ROLLING STONES is The greatest band EVER. Simple as that.

It's like the baseball player who hits .388 his third year. In his next 10 years he hits .333. He is still a superstar/the best.

No one can come anywhere close to: Beggars>Let it Bleed>Ya Yas>Sticky>Exile>Goats>IORR>Black and Blue>Some Girls.

and yes, I am bridging many more albums than the holy four as I can make a case for all of them,

Stones overrated? Probably a bit, but not much.

Not at all overrated. Rather the opposite is true. The sex-appeal and energy of their music is unparalleled. They are cool and intelligent people, who together are more than just a band. The aura is unique. I still think they do not get as much recognition from the "general public" as they would deserve.
Not that it troubles mesmiling smiley, just saying that.

the stones are not overrated, infact they are very underrated.

look at the songs they dont bother with anymore on various albums, those songs would be reguarded as most other bands best recordings.

songs like,

jigsaw puzzle.
let it loose,
far away eyes.
she was hot.
hang fire.
brand new car.
gunface.
infamy.
she,s so cold.
respectable.
shattered.
citadel.
dear doctor.
something happened to me yesterday.
sittin on a fence.
i am waiting
2120 south michigan avenue
we love you.
live with me.
lady jane.
miss amanda jones.
moonlight mile.
heartbreaker.
time waits for no one.
crazy mama.

and many more.

i doubt whether a large propertion of society would have heard many of those songs, yet if they listened to them they would see a versatility and variety of music that has never been produced by a single band ever before.

the original question was somewhat rhetorical...
It had to do with another thread that asked a similar question

("Were the Beatles overrated")

Overrated?
Well, No.
Go see them in concert, don't drink too much & don't get too high. Then you'll agree. It's not about being perfect, that's for the classically trained & musical genius. This is about working with what you got & they do it better than anyone.

The Stones are unfairly underrated by most classic rock fans..

No , The Stones may have received the benefit of the doubt in their later years , but they've always had to prove themselves .

A couple of their releases were not exactly quite up to snuff and it showed in the record sales . The only reason some bought them was to fill out their collection . ( I'm guilty of this on greatest hits and compilation LPs ) . But the critics and the fans have never accepted them blindly .

I remember the review of Goats Head Soup by Greil Marcus in 1973 in which he stated that if you used as a yardstick what the Stones recorded 10 years ago then you would be missing out on some really good music. And no I did not read the review in 1973...I read the quote in a Stones related article. This is so very true as there is some excellent music on Tatto You and Undercover and going forward.

If you consider the Stones and/or the Beatles overrated, who should be rated higher, then? Maybe, then we can come to a conclusion if they are over or underrated.

Not underrated so much as taken for granted.
How much different and poorer would rock music have been be if they hadn't been arround.
The folks who criticise them are often those who owe them the most in my opinion.

Stones in the 60s and 70s are underrated, and today they are overrated live I think. Strange really. I have to promote their 60s and 70s and early 80s to friends and here I put their 89-2006 live period down. There are gems here and there of course but the lack of new material, the synths, Chuck, the horns, the band set up and Keiths versions of Happy bugs me.

Most people underrate The Stones, few if any overrate them. Most people don't "understand" The Stones' music well, it's too noisy. Most people don't understand e.g. jazz either. But they know that they don't understand jazz. But they don't know that they don't understand The Stones, they just think it's not as good as Beatles, Dylan etc.
