Found this great site: [www.nzentgraf.de]

710300B March: UK TV (BBC) ‘Top Of The Pops’, London.
- Bitch (MJ/KR) -live vocals on prepared backing track
- Wild Horses (MJ/KR) -live vocals on prepared backing track
Line-up: MJ (voc)/KR (gtr, bvoc)/MT (gtr)/BW (bass)/CW (dr)
Note: Telecast on the 22nd April.
The Stones didn’t use the official takes as playback.

What happened to these have they turned up?
Sorry if this has been overdone. x

No..they only exist on audio form. The original video tapes of the performance and the broadcast have been destroyed.

What a shame, They were destroyed because they were not going to be used?

The BBC wiped the tapes because they were expensive and wanted to reuse them. Other Stones things missing include Juke Box Jury.

OT: In the mid 70s they had every episode of Doctor Who and wiped the lot then spent the next 30 years trying to recover them, still a lot missing but every once in a while one turns up.

I;m sorry, but again and again one hears about these BBC blunders. Were they really broke or just a l;ittle slow on the uptake?

The latter

Just a case of needing storage space and not having the foresight to see what the likes of us would consider to be material of significant cultural and historical importance.

There are only something like 5 or 6 of the Stones' performances on TOTP left. Thats why whenever the BBC advertise some kind of "Stones special" every so often its rarely worth watching as its always the same clips. Tseverin may correct me on this as he knows better, but 2 of those performances that get shown over and over (namely the 26.1.67 clip of LSTNT and the 15.4.71 clip of Brown Sugar) are actually reruns taken from the Christmas day 'best of the year' editions of the show as the original broadcasts have been wiped. The 1969 Xmas Day TOTP appearance of 'Honky tonk women' wasnt a rerun from July of that year, but a new performance recorded especially for the show on 12.12.69 (the July/August appearances have been wiped as well, including the historically significant one of the Stones' appearance on the show on the day that Brian died). The Stones taped 2 versions of HTW that day for use on the show, both of which were shown a few times over the following few weeks.

Funny you should mention that clip of LSTNT Gazza, it was shown on BBC4 only last night on their 'Sounds Of The Sixties' slot. Still amuses me that the words had to be changed for their appearnace on U.S. televison.

They WERE used!

For a short time, the UK's "Top of the Pops" programme included a "featured album" slot in which an artiste would perform three songs instead of the customary single chart hit. The reaction to the Stones' appearance was incredible with the sales of Sticky Fingers shooting up three-fold during the following week.

It's an absolute disgrace that the BBC have allowed such fantastic footage to be destroyed.

Oddly enough the Faces' 'album slot' from the following week (29/4/71) DOES survive. It was shown on a rerun of the entire show in a series of vintage TOTP editions on UK Gold over a decade ago. They played 'Richmond' and 'Bad 'n' Ruin' "

Trevor Lawrence, according to Nico Zentgraf's site.

Odd that they didnt use Bobby Keys as the clip was actually filmed just after the British tour and around the time of the Marquee shows in March, in which Bobby DID play.

The clip posted above by jonny is from December '69, filmed the same day as the Gimme Shelter clip which wasnt recorded for TOTP but for the New years Eve "Pop go The 60's" special
