OT: Terence Trent D' Arby Live - JUMPIN' JACK FLASH !! - Excellent !!
Posted by: HelterSkelter ()
Date: February 8, 2007 18:27

Just picked up the kinda new TTD'Arby Best of (DO YOU LOVE ME LIKE YOU SAY) and forgot (till I listened) how brilliant the guy is/was. Also got his latest CD - WILDCARD and there's a lot of kick ass songs on there as well as a slick, well put together CD package. Why isn't this guy big ? He has a great voice and wonderful stage show (also a HUGE Stones fan. When I saw him live years ago he said the only church he goes to is the church of the Rolling Stones before ripping into UNDER MY THUMB - he was into it)..... So where is this Dude? He should be a top performer... What happened to him?

REVISED PART: Thanks for all the feedback. His attitude sucks but he's still a great performer (as I did a little search since posting this originally a few days ago) HE STILL ROCKS !! - here's a smoking version of:

JUMPIN'JACK FLASH live in Milano - 1993

VIBRATOR - the video (great song, one of his later ones after WISHING WELL was long gone)

If either one doesn't work just type in the usual youtube address and do a search under D'Arby. Stupid attitude but the man still has mega talent, what a self destructive waste/shame.....

He went through a mysterious psychological transformation, whereby a few years ago he began to believe he was the Lord Maitreya, the coming World Teacher.

You might think this idea is a manifestation of my warped sense of humour BUT it is 100% the truth. I have an interview article with TTD to prove it.

I have not heard anything of him since...

As far as I remember Terrence was a hugely talented singer/songwriter/performer who had a great future ahead of him. Until he started telling anyone who would listen that he was the greatest musician of all time. He sort of became a parody of the rockstar that believed his own hype. His first album "The Hardline According To Terrence Trent D'Arby" is worth a look.

I always thought his "invisibility" was due to some sort of bad mangement or bad PR. But maybe, like some people say, he really IS nuts. The "you can dress him up but you can't take him out" syndrome.

I vaguely remember that in the mid '80s (during the M/K feud) there were rumors that keith & ronnie wanted him (TTD) to front the band if Mick was going off to do his solo thing......not sure but I think I even read this in Bill German's BB. I read it somewhere. Can anyone confirm this rumor?

Was it more than just a rumor? Was this Keith's way of pissnig Mick off? If this had come to fruition...could they perform under the name "Rolling Stones"? Who owns the name?

SOrry if this has already been talked about.

He's been living here in Milano for years. Never caught him around though. Odd place to settle with all the beauties in the world. Must be for the ladies (sure not the fog)!

I had to go and see him some time ago, but couldn't make it. Funky man! As we say here "he wins but without convincing". There is always something missing for him to be big.

Maybe some problems with his HUGE ego. He claimed at one time to be better than the Beatles.

My dad took me to his show at the Arena in Verona - I wouldn't have been more than 8 years old at the time. That's the last time I had heard that name before I came across this thread.

TTD'A was/is a BAD motherf*cker. First tiem I saw the video to "If you let me stay" I was floored. This guy is going to be humongous, I thought. Just like Prince. Then he put out "Symphony or Damn" which was lethal. The opening cut, "She Kissed me" I saw him do it on TV. He was incredible. The band - he caem out with these white dudes with Afros, playing huge stacks of Amps. Way before that other guy who always imitates Hendrix did it. His moves were like the Godfather['s. and he knew how to write - some beautiful melodies on the ballads.
Then he imploded. A tragic waste.

Take a look - it's pure delirium. This guy is damaged goods for sure.

I saw him at The Hacienda in Manchester in about 1994-5, he was fantastic and did a storming Jumpin' Jack Flash for an encore.

ok...in my previous post on this thread I mentioned the 1988 rumor that TT D'Arby would replace Mick....

I dug up my old issues of Beggars Banquets. Bill German reported (Vol.2 #14) in an articled called "Dabbling With D'Arby" that at a benefit concert (organized by Bill Wyman) at London's Royal Albert Hall, D'Arby sang back-up on 3 songs and ignited a rumor in the Daily Mirror. The Daily Mirror reported that D'Arby fronted the band...and then quoted Ron Wood as saying "He made Jagger sound like a strangled chicken." Bill German ended his coverage with "...even Woody's not that stupid."

So there....it was just a false rumor.

anyway...reading my old issues of BB has brought back memories. I'll let you know if I find anything else interesting. Thanks Bill German wherever you are!

Maybe Lenny Kravitz would have been a better comparison than Sly or Prince.

Lenyy Kravitz. That was the name I couldn't rememeber when I was talking about TTDA already having his band look like Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell way before Kravitz.
I would not snicker at him nowadays; anyone who sees this thread and then reads up on his "liquid" bio on his site. he might be way out there today. But Hendrix was from Mars, and Brian Wilson stayed locked in his room for years. terence Trent D'arby in his short heyday was nothing short of genius. he needed an editor and maybe a strict probation officer type person in his life, but he is no laughing stock.

What happened? Well, having recorded an admittedly great multi-million selling album, TTD disappeared up his own rectum faster than a proctologist looking for a gold suppository. Blame a combination of rampant ego (at the height of his fame he declared "I am a genius, Point. F-ucking. Blank"), drugs (he was a big coke and MDMA fiend), and believing his own hype. TTD decided he wasn't a mere pop singer with classic soulman chops, but A Major Artist - like, you know, Dali or Goya or BOTH! He followed his debut with an unlistenable mess called "Neither Fish Nor Flesh", which bombed BIG TIME. He then retreated and re-emerged with a watered down version of his debut called "Vibrator" - which was addled with self-conscious attempts at "musical maturity" and the same po-faced "genius" (let's call it muso w.ank) which dominated "Fish". Lenny Kravitz had, of course, by that time taken away most of his fans, so TTD - highly talented though he is - was left without much of an audience.

I think his problem was that he wanted to be Prince. Trouble is he was too dumb to realise that if you attempt to follow the unique, you end up making a tit of yourself and falling flat on your face. Which he did. He should have concentrated and built on his own strengths - brilliant songwriting and a terrific voice - instead of trying to imitate someone else's. You can take steroids and pump iron all day, but you won't be Arnie, you'll be a big dumb lunk with tiny balls and no dick. Which is what TTD's become.

Oh, and he STILL wants to be Prince - name change, internet only releases ... Trouble is, Prince changed his name back and is now signed with a major.

Dreadful shame, but there you go.

I remember in 1992 he appeared on stage with Bruce Springsteen and they did Jumping Jack Flash together. There was mass booing at Trent, not Bruuuuuuce-ing.

I think he also appeared with INXS for a one off show in Australia, after Michael's death.

Yeah, I have the bootleg of that Bruce show - Meadlowlands Arena. Bruce was very pissed off by the crowd reaction.

What a shame...the guy was really onto something.

In the '60s and '70s, bands had to put out at least three or four really good albums before going crazy, taking themselves too seriously and dropping off the musical map. That requirement seems to have been lowered to one good album sometime in the '80s and has stayed there ever since.

Not to mention the f.ucking dreadful prose. But, like I said, this idiot is a Prince tribute act ... in his head.

For everyone's benefit, this is what someone going Colonel Kurtz up his own arse sounds like ...

Sananda Francesco Maitreya, (Artist Name: Sananda Maitreya) was born from the smouldering ashes of a former artists heart who had undergone severe trauma, lost his will and prayed devotedly to his creator to restore him to a new life. After much meditation, in 1995, at the age of 33, earth years, his prayers were answered and he was given a new consciousness. The name given to this consciousness was Sananda which means 'one who walks with light' , Maitreya which means 'among the sons of God'. He presents his music as POST MILLENIUM ROCK because he feels that it is more inclusive and representative of the vision his spirit inspires him to share. He inherited a body born March 15th 1962, in Harlem-Manhattan-New York City and married for the first time in 2003 his wife and long time friend Francesca Francone Maitreya. He lives full time in Milano-Italy and looks after his own affairs. He says that he had his light switched on at the age of 2 by the music of the Beatles and has been a fool for music ever since. "I have suffered music and she has suffered me and there is no doubt that she has seen my willingness to bear her love even in the darkest hours and because of that we have earned one another's trust and our bond is close and deep. I would die for the music and in fact already have". He plays the four basic instruments of Rock: drums, bass, guitar and keyboards; as well as a few others instruments besides and can never remember a time when music wasn't playing in his head! From the beginning of his professional career he has written and produced his musical affairs. He was and remains a fan of all kinds of music and is committed to completing his own unique vision of what music can be as filtered through his own set of circumstances and the truth of his own nature. In describing his music he quotes from one of his idols, the great American Prophet and Poet Walt Whitman "Listen, I will be honest with you. I do not offer the old smooth prizes, but offer rough new prizes". His hobbies include whatever explains beauty and allows him to put more of it back into the world of wonders.

¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤

Once upon a time, an artist, a fish, woke up to find himself in an era swimming in various kinds of music,
the best of which touched him as a fish swimming in water feels everything that the water contains.
He decided to take elements of all that moved him, wrap it around his vision and call it: 'POST MILLENIUM ROCK' (PMR!).
PMR acknowledges with respect all that has gone before it, adds new strains and continues it passing it forward.
PMR recognizes no valid ethnic, gender, age or language barriers and recognizes that its origins belong to the people. It is by its nature a hybrid form just as pre-millenium rock was/is and so contains aspects when inspired of country, soul, gospel, jazz, 'world', hip-hop, classical, reggae, and anything that moves the spirit. Its main elements are heart and soul (the soul that is present in all true music, that comes from the heart, not the marketing category of soul). Its nature is passion, courage and curiosity and it acknowledges no rules and will not be tamed merely for easy corporate consumption. It is its own beast and shall remain so. Its purpose is to lead the listener back to the garden in their heart, to provoke the mind into seeing fresh new shapes in order to encourage fresh new visions and PMR has a preference (though no rules) for natural instrumentation played by living beings praising spirit and humanity through their chosen intruments.
This particular fish heard the call of Sananda in 1995, at the age of 33. And he has been one of his voices since.
He was also instructed to use the new music he would be given by Sananda not as a further barrier of separation,
but as a call to community and shared values, because we are all one!

Sananda
