Brian Jones comment on Mick Jagger
Posted by: stonesrule ()

In 1966, Brian Jones said of Mick Jagger:

"He's the best pop performer Britain's ever had. He made the group really.
Without Mick, the Stones would have been nothing."

WHich also could be said about Keith, Brian himself, and Charlie.
Possibly also about Wyman. Maybe also Taylor. Ronnie.
I could go on.

Huh?

In those times especially the front man was key to winning popularity with the masses.

Charlie is a jewel.

No way was anyone but Mick ever the front man.

In the case of Brian at his best he had some great musical moments but he was not the guy at the microphone keeping the set going.

I can assure, I didn't mean anything negative about CHarlie Watts,
only meant that the term "best pop performer in Britain" seems a bit odd for Charlie Watts,
he's THE drummer in the Rolling Stones, and of course a key element.

Brian was the leader of the Rolling Stones until he got too drugged out to function which was probably around 1965-66 era. Mick and Keith then took control of the group. In the early sixties the Stones were Brian's group!

Jagger is the best front man,
watts and wyman are one of the very best rhythm sections.

That comment just shows the respect Brian had for Mick's talent and contributions. Brian knew that a powerful frontman is as important to a band as location is to a restaurant.

Ya gotta keep in mind the context of the times. In 1962 Brian could not have imagined the Stones being as big as they were soon to become. His praise of Jagger in 1966 was sincere for many reasons, including the fact that playing Royal Albert Hall was am exciting, huge step forward from clubs and small auditoriums. Unfortunately, Brian did not handle the growing success of the band well.

Some very talented musicians through the years never felt comfortable with constant "foreign" touring or big gigs. Likely one of Mick T's problems.

I might as well take this moment to dispel the false rumor that Brian, Hendrix and Lennon talked about forming a supergroup. Perhaps this was one of Brian's little thoughts but Hendrix and Lennon didn't think that way at all. Just anotaher revisionist history theory as opposed to fact.

Yep, that's the cold fact..With Lennon in Stones as a singer it would have been a smashing band, but that's fantasies...
