I'm very curious as to how this got leaked. I thought the Stones made an effort to prevent their tapes from getting out after the Voodoo boxsets.

I found them when going through another user's files on soulseek. The guy who I downloaded them from doesnt know who he got them from or where they originated from. It remains a mystery.

So, there you go..substantial edits in several of the songs ranging from a whopping minute extra of 'Don't Wanna Go Home', 47 seconds from 'Biggest Mistake, 37 seconds from 'Under the radar', 33 seconds from 'Driving Too Fast', 27 seconds from 'Dangerous Beauty', 18 seconds from 'It Wont take long', 10 from 'she saw me coming' down to a couple of seconds (or less) from some others

If there's a second differencen in the time between each of the mixes and the official release , its probably not an edit at all. And the various mixes of each song are basically the same length as each other too.

I'd be interested if anyone can tell of any significant differences they can find between each of the mixes of the songs which appear more than once.

Good point, which makes my speculation probably wholly idle. But still... the first 2 you mention are supposed to have been done fairly spontaneously at the sessions, I think. The last is another jagger-work, so there may be no alternates from the sessions.

My first listen to ABB in 5-6 months, can't believe it but the best song to my ears is (kill me) SOL...

I just contacted the guy who I got these from and the story is that he was temporarily working in a place about 18 months ago in New York which shared a storage facility with Sterling Sound, where the album was being mastered.

He was going through their server one day, saw a file marked 'Rolling Stones' and, being a fan of their music yet not to the degree where hes ever seen them live, was curious enough to make a copy on an AIFF File. This was before the album was released, of course (July '05, we figured out between us).

Asked him if the lossless version still existed and he said that they didnt. He had some storage problems a while ago, and so they were lost. Fortunately he still had the mp3's however, so theres NO prospect of the uncompressed versions of these surfacing it seems.

Passed on a thanks on behalf of the Stones online community - he was pleased he was able to share it with us.

Before ABB came out you had the recordings of it a some weeks in advance. You not being audiophile, do you think that maybe these could be different mixes too? Do you still have it and are you able to upload?

No..that was the official album. The songs were played at an EMI listening party and someone just had a tape recorder in their pocket and made a lo-fi recoding of it

There wont be a torrent of it as - as said above - its mp3 source

GotToRollMe's links over on Rocks Off still seem to be working ...

The Stones need to learn WHEN to say WHEN, when it comes to the final mixes of their albums. They seem to tweak the life out of them. As for ABB they should have said WHEN with these mixes. The differences are subtle but brilliant and to me, harden the drive of the album overall. The intro and outro of "Biggest Mistake" give the whole song a different, more "Dead Flowers" feel while the lack of synth F/X on SOL let the guitars carry the melody - to better effect.

I'll admit I'm at a loss to hear much, if any difference, on "This Place Is Empty."

They overdid "Steel Wheels" the same way as those early mixes proved.

ha! given i haven't even listened to ABB in about 6 months - i doubt i would even recognize the differences....

On the tracks where things aren't noticabely different, it's just little things like the guitars are louder or quieter, etc..

for example, ONNYA sounds basically the same but there are little guitar fills that are quieter and were later given a volume boost on the finished version.

Except for the intro and outro on Biggest Mistake (luckilly, my favourite song of the album), I don't hear any real differences. I guess the title should be "very late mixes". I still think about half of the album is good, but it just doesn't sound all that thrilling now I listen to it again. I never heard We Don't Wanna Go Home before, that is one trully terrible song! Under the Radar is much better, but still....

I can hear at least 5 edits from this version compared to the original. As I said above, 7 of the 11 different songs have edits ranging from 18 seconds up to one minute from these versions compared to the released versions. Streets of Love, which is possibly the same length, sounds a significantly different mix to me

Which they were, as this collection was 'liberated' in July 2005, probably 6-8 weeks before the album was released and about a month before EMI had their listening parties. It's still an 'early mix' though!

After the first chorus of Driving Too Fast, there is a noticable guitar playing slides that are missing on the final version

mmm, I thought the slide on Driving too fast belonged there...I guess I just don't know ABB well enough to really hear the differences!
