Am I alone in thinking Eavis is hyping this up to such a level that when said act is announced, he's going to sound like a twat?

You're not alone. But...any PR is good PR for a festival, at least Eavis must think so.

Let me pose this question to you all, as I have not been able to keep up with what the heck is going on with them..........What about the Doors with Ian Astbury as the lead singer? I know that they did some shows in the US a few years back but they never put out an album and I don't even know if they are still together as that line up...that would be more modern......Or maybe a Winos reunion......

I read that as a Wings reunion... grinning smiley

I think the band Michael Eavis means is The Red Hot Chili Peppers who have apparently offered to play the festival for nothing though they may have been turned down as the lineup was already finalised.

No! His only defence will be his own very curious and quirky definition of "the biggest band in the world".

Methinks he's managed to get his favourites, Radiohead, to
sign on the dotted line.

Performing - yes. Headlining - No.

"Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has confirmed The Who are set to perform at his annual Somerset music festival.
However, he said the rock act were not the "biggest band in the world" he referred to in a recent BBC interview.."

Gazza- your friend Joey will be so excited by this news-

He will - but he wont leave Nebraska to do so.

I cant access Townshend's site from work. Any more European dates announced on there?

Erik_Snow, you are wrong. They were the headliner for Toronto Rocks in 2003. I talk about the big festival with more than 450.000 people. Other bands were AC/DC, Rush, The Guess Who, Justin Timberlake, Isley Brothers and more.

If they play festivals in Europe 2007, than they will be the main attraction. They can do Roskilde, Rock @ The Ring, Rock @ The Park and more big events, also Glastonbury.

I'd say about 1%. They never play festivals.

It was on BBC radio this pm that it had been "leaked" that eavis was in fact refering to the WHO

I was thinking about writing "they hardly ever play festivals" but it sounded so stupid, so I changed it into
"they never play festivals"

If you want it absolutely correct, I guess I should have written "0,01% of Rolling Stones' concerts are at festivals"

Of course I know about Toronto 03 and Knebworth 76

Gazza, Radio 5 live were speculating that the "biggest band in the world" in question is The Red Hot Chilli Peppers! Who knows

I would tend to think that it is the Red Hot Chili Peppers that Eavis is referring to, though they clearly are not the biggest band in the world. In the U.S., and even in their L.A. hometown, they are an arena level band, but in many parts of the world, including the UK, they are a stadium level act. In June 2004, they sold out 3 nights at Hyde Park to 90,000 per night and the feeling at the time from the promoter was they could have sold out at least a couple more.

Pete Townshend has been saying since last year that he would like to end this current Who tour at Glastonbury, so it's no surprise that they seem set to play there.

If it's the Stones that Eavis is referring to, let's hope they don't follow the example of Paul McCartney when he headlined there in 2004 and made it his only UK show for that years tour, even though he had cancelled a stadium sized gig in Scotland the year before and should have done a makeup concert there, besides playing at Glastonbury.

Good points, guys. The RHCP are certainly massive over here and the record sales worldwide of their last 3 albums would be even bigger than the likes of U2.

However, Michael Eavis also said that the Biggest Band In The World quote did NOT refer to the Who.

He said that they were "a modern band" so my money is on the RHCP.

What would the odds be of the Police playing the festival if in fact they do a reunion tour this summer?

they're slated to play Wembley Stadium on 21st July, a full month after glastonbury... would it make sense, logistically to play 2 massive shows in the same country a month apart?

Ignoring the comment about a modern band, it would make sense for the Stones to play Glastonbury.

In general, the people who attend Glasto are NOT their usual audience. Most younger generation people cannot afford the ticket prices for the Stones in the UK and generally seated gigs are not well liked! They would therefore catch a different audience and get a lot of media attention for it. It would also seriously improve their image in the UK (newspaper headlines about OAPs in the audience at gigs etc). Remember that UK is the only country in Europe to get all seated venues so that the old fans don't get too tired - other European audiences are much younger (as a rule).

I saw an interview with Michael Eavis where he said that he always wanted the Stones to do it but that they charge more than all the other bands put together. However, Michael would definitely love the Stones to do it. Assumin that the Stones want to go out with a bang, it might make sense for them to slip in a few carefully chosen festivals. They would have to seriously reduce their fees but perhaps they will decide that capturinga new generation of fans to buy their records could secure some long-term "pension" royalties. Obviously Paul McCartney thought so when he did it.

All in all, I think it would make sense for the Stones to do Glasto because it would drastically improve their image in the UK. However, I don't think they will do it.
