I'm making a change to my own list above, I won't be seeing Alabama Shakes April 16 because this young rock duo I've been keeping an eye on just announced a tour. They'll be in DC that day, so I'm seeing them instead
[www.instagram.com]

Last July I pitched them as prospects for future Stones openers on the Opening Acts thread, as follows:
________

...I advocate for the Stones to take seriously the opportunities for new rock bands that their opening gigs provide. [Everybody recalls my griping about the Stones selling a megalomaniacal 50something billionaire lots of opening gigs for his personal ego trips.] ...Take a peek at a new female rock duo out of Buenos Aires. Lead singer/guitarist Ines Adam and bassist/singer Martina Nintzel go by "Pacifica"

I add all this here, RisingStone, because their just accounced tour includes May dates in Manchester (in an only 200 cap venue), Bristol, and London. You might want to sample their albums Freak Scene and In Your Face, and some live show vids, to see if they interest you.

Be advised that that second guitarist, the guy, Rodri, who adds so much to that rooftop set, is no longer with them; the girls are performing as just a duo plus a drummer. I also find their resulting second album as not rocking as hard as Freak Scene did, so I'm not as confident as I initially was that they're going to succeed. Still, I'm keeping an eye on them and will finally get to see them live.

David Byrne Glasgow first night clashes with Samantha Fish in Edinburgh. Should have picked the second night.

On my way back from David Byrne show. Art rock at its best. The choreography, the lighting, the projections — visually one of the most original and stunning concerts I’ve ever seen. Kaleidoscopic is the word that springs to my mind. Just magical.

Was sat on the top level of the SEC Armadillo, the 3k seater where I saw Dylan last year. This is a seating concert and thought the stall/FOS was not the best location to see the show as the way they utilised the stage floor, the visual projected across its entire surfaces, is a big part of the performance. There are stories and meanings there. The mid-tier (balcony) is the best IMHO.

They will be back to Scotland, David’s home country, in July to play 3 shows in Edinburgh. Already got a ticket for the final night and looking forward to experiencing it all over again.

Not for, but saw yesterday. Check out Rodney Crowell on his current tour if he comes to or close to your town. Excellent band, great songs, great storytelling about his musical career.

Am going to Dundee (the ‘Sinister’ show) and Glasgow night #1 (the ‘Tigermilk’ show) in June.

How were your two consecutive experiences of David Byrne in Glasgow?

Massive Wagons X3 - Holmfirth, Middlesbrough and Hull (home) in April

Wolfsbane X3 - 100 Club , Rock City Notts and Welly , Hull (home) in May

Keifer Sutherland - Leeds in May

and lots more. In years when the Stones don't tour we see so many great bands, old and new.

I also saw the American Utopia show in Glasgow. That was magnificent, but the current Who Is The Sky? tour is on another level, out of this world. The sky is the limit. You will be in for a treat.

I visited the Piece Hall in Halifax once for a New Order concert in 2021 (one of my earliest returns to gigs after a year and a half’s off for Covid). Easily the most beautiful open-air venue I have ever been to, reminding me of some Italian or Spanish squares. Hope to be back there someday and immersed in the atmosphere. As I commented, I recommend you to stand on the raised areas where you can see the projections on the stage floor unless you are a staunch FOSer.

I saw the 86-year-old Judy Collins perform an intimate show last Friday in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She gave me a big smile and handed me a rose when she saw my Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young t-shirt. If you know, you know.

"Godspeed You! Black Emperor" ... tomorrow.

My son wants to take me there, after I've taken him to see the Stones, Nick Cave, Roger Waters etc. for years. I'm curious.

Has anyone from here ever seen the band live?

They were once introduced as a spearhead of the ‘Canadian post-rock’ along with Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think etc.(early Arcade Fire were often referred to in that context).
Saw them once, Osaka 2001, on their first Japanese tour. After 25 years, my memory is almost a blur. All I recall is that their tunes were instrumental only, no vocals, the gig was good and worth coming. I haven’t followed them thereafter, though, and don’t know what their current music is like. Hope this helps.

Trivia: their name is taken from the title of the 1976 b&w Japanese documentary film following a group of young biker gangs (‘bosozoku’).

You are welcome.

It’s a kind of avant-rock, don’t think, just feel it.
Would appreciate if you let us know how you will have felt it.

Okay, here are a few words for you.
GY!BE played an really interesting gig yesterday.

It's certainly not the kind of music that touches my heart the way many Stones tracks or other classic rock/blues bands do, but I still really enjoyed the gig and I'm glad my son took me along.

Sure, my ears aren't usually used to hearing these kinds of sounds live, but it was still impressive to hear such a powerful sound.
Two drummers, three guitars, two basses (partly played a double bass) and a violin that played wonderfully subtle accents and solos.

The audience (around 1000) was whipping and felt the energy pulsing in the room; at least, that was my impression.
At some times, the sound reminded me of early Pink Floyd jams from the UFO Club in London.
But of course, that was only partly true; there isn't much I know that sounds quite like this band ... very long songs (mostly over 10 minutes) completely without vocals, but film projections provided visual stimuli to accompany the songs (hope, environment, political unrest, nature).
Even the support act, a member of the Swans (Kristof Hahn) with lap steel guitar, was just as impressive as the headliner.

For €40, almost three hours (including support) of good music (that was completely new to me) – it was a very nice evening with my son and "Godspeed You! Black Emperor".

Many thanks for your firsthand account of GYBE, Nankstone. I’m glad you enjoyed their performance. Sometimes trying an artist you are unfamiliar with can be rewarding and your experience last night certainly sounds like the case.
Makes me feel like getting back to their music as well as gigs.
