(Right now I was supposed to be in the Waterboys concert in DC, but I'd gotten overconfident from my several recent Richmond-to-DC trips going very smoothly, was cutting the trip to 9:30 Club pretty close, and... tonight it bit me. Twelve miles north somebody returning from vacation towing their very large recreational boat had lost control of it, spilled it on the side of the interstate, and had called in a bunch of specialized vehicles that tied up I-95 as they tried to get the big water toy onto another, bigger boat trailer. Finally past the long traffic tie-up I was going to miss half the concert, and bailed on the trip. $56 lost - could have been worse.)

Update: I'd never seen NIN live. Trent Reznor & co. put on an awesome rock show! NC State's basketball arena was filled to the last row of the third tier. Reznor: "There's a f*ckin' lot of people in here! I have no explanation for it. But I'm grateful."

Two random observations: NIN fans (1) love the color black; and (2) gotta get their tour teeshirts! There were many merch stands, and every one had ridiculous lines. I don't recall ever seeing such a demand for teeshirts in an arena before.

Wolf Alice I saw for the 5th time a few nights ago in DC. After two albums they were my favorite young rock band. Now after four albums they are not. It's Ellie Rowsell's band, the boys all do what she wants. She and Joff Oddie began as folkies. Then with Joel and Theo became incredible heavy rockers. NOW Ellie led them into putting out an Easy Listening album. "Just Two Girls," for example, is a pretty song, but reminds me of Dionne Warwick singing Burt Bacharach's "Walk On By." I went into Friday night expecting to be disappointed. Thankfully, they still played some of their kick-ass rock songs too. But that said, I think it's about time for me. to disembark the Wolf Alice train.

Also, for the second N.Am. tour in a row, Joff Oddie didn't come over from England. He has good reasons for skipping both tours, but still, he's a big cog in their machine.

Seeing Johnny Marr next week, but going to a music festival in Buffalo, run my Robbie Takac (bass player for The Goo Goo Dolls and music junkie...I am not a fan of the Goos per se, but am a fan of this festival and Robbie Takac's infectious enthusiasm about ALL music). Called MUSIC IS ART. One day. Free. Well over 100 bands, loads of stages all within an easy walk of each other. Rock, punk, folk, metal, post punk, jazz, blues, rockabilly, rap, singer/songwriter, techno, R&B, DJ set, reggae, Japanese drummers, and on and on. Simultaneously, painters creative visual art on-stage, behind the bands.

After being told that music had no place at an 'art festival', Takac launched this. Much respect for the guy.

I agree with you on Wolf Alice. Saw them years ago and was blown away, became a fan. After this last record, they lost me.
