Madonna opening night in Vancouver July 15. I mentioned in the overpriced concert tickets thread that my tickets via Amex were only $231 including all fees for 2! Ironically, Platinum seats literally right across the aisle from me are $500 each.

Buddy Guy, a few shows this week! He is holding his annual residency at Legends in Chicago. I usually see 3-4 shows of his each year here. Great openers, not to be missed. I see 2 live shows of various artists every week, it’s my thing, so I don’t post on this thread, but thought Buddy deserves special mention. Go see him if you are near Chicago! Tickets online, sells out to late walk ups.

Buddy Guy (Prag) - first date in europe spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

not really, according to his website he plays Paris a couple of days before Prague

True, but the Prague Gig was first listed on his Website.winking smiley

I guess buying a ticket for Buddy Guy in Prague qualifies your purchase for the 'Overpriced concert tickets' thread…

Of course, the tickets are expensive, no question, but overpriced ?
I think everyone has to decide for themselves.
For me it's relatively easy to travel from Germany to Prague (round 60 €) then the ticket (round 190 € first row left block) plus a very good Czech meal and Czech beer.
We drive across the border after the gig and I'm sleeping at a friend's house ... it suits for me very well overall, but certainly not for everyone.

To Chicago it would be a much further and more expensive trip for me, even if the tickets are probably cheaper than in Europe.
Paris Tickets (or possibly London, Berlin, etc.) will surely not be cheaper in Europe than Prague.

It's probably really the wrong thread here, but I just wanted to reply to the quoted statement here.

* Jan 21 I would be up the road in DC seeing these Baltimore kids, pinkshift (no relation to BlackPink... or Pink), but for a little transportation problem at the moment.
[youtu.be]
Like many of us here I chase some big legacy acts. But I also find there to be no shortage of young, new rocknroll bands out there striving, some of them damn good. They just don't have the same opportunities now to get big, through rock, that existed in the 1970s.

As for upcoming shows that I will be at:

* The Book of Mormon. Feb. 10. I'll count the musical from the South Park guys.

* Springsteen. March 27. Still irked at the $524 cost of my floor seat. But in the 5 previous times I've seen him it was never from the floor. So, I'm paying it -- one time.

* Titus Andronicus. Apr. 3. The NJ band, not the play.

* Lydia Loveless/Drive-By Truckers. Apr. 28. Top bill for this tour is DBTs, of course; but for me Lydia's music is more interesting.

Not a lot right now. But other stuff will come up.

I had been hoping to go see Tropical F*ck Storm Friday as a bday present to myself. Turns out the bass player has been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. They had to cancel the whole US tour. Healing vibes to Fiona Kitschin. TFS are a really interesting band from Melbourne Australia.

Adding a couple more shows.

* The Book of Mormon. Feb. 10
* Springsteen. March 27
* Screaming Females (Marissa Paternoster). March 29
* Titus Andronicus. Apr. 2
* Amanda Shires. Apr. 22
* Lydia Loveless/Drive-By Truckers. Apr. 28

Also considering Flogging Molly Feb 15 or Larkin Poe March 9

I've always appreciated good album cover art. Screaming Females' photo cover of their Live at the Hideout album captures a core unavoidable part of life in obscure touring bands everywhere... beautifully understated.

An Amanda Shires sampler

I didn't know who she is before I started listening to her husband Jason Isbell. She's the fiddler in his band the 400 Unit, in addition to being a solo performer, and a member, with Maren Morris and Brandi Carlile, of the Highwomen. From Lubbock, at 15 she was the only female and only member under 70 of the post-Bob Wills Texas Playboys. John Prine mentored her. 5'3, she has a voice I don't regard as strong or special. What I most like is her songwriting. Her associations with Prine and Isbell make sense when you hear her songs. She has things she wants to say, and writes some lyrics as trenchant and unvarnished as her husband, at his best, does.

In this 2011 Tiny Desk Concert at NPR in DC Amanda was about 29. The first two songs I found okay, but the third,
"When You Need A Train It Never Comes"
is most interesting; I recommend skipping to it at 7:00
[youtu.be]

Of these two,
"Wasted and Rolling" and
"Bulletproof"
I like the 2nd more; starts at 3:50.
Recorded for the UK BBC Radio June 2, 2014
[youtu.be]

Break Out The Champagne (2018)
[youtu.be]
One of my Shires favorites, it makes a fitting introduction for twisty takes to come and she opens a lot of shows with it.

(I Did A) "Parking Lot Pirouette" (2018)
[youtu.be]

"Im Your Man" (Leonard Cohen cover, 2021)
[youtu.be]

(I Want You) "Gone For Christmas" (2021)
[youtu.be]

"Don't Be Alarmed" (2022)
[youtu.be]
The thinness and frailty of her voice serves some songs well. This is one.

"Take It Like A Man" (2022)
[youtu.be]
She's called this a study of vulnerability and consequences. I don't I hear it as an exhortation to male toughness, but as a deconstruction and commentary on what some males seem to think the phrase to mean, justify, or encourage.

"Hawk For The Dove" (2022)
[youtu.be]
(She significantly sexied up her performance outfits for the latest album and 2022 tour.)

"Empty Cups" (2022)
In Brooklyn Oct 26
[youtu.be]

"The Problem" (2022)
Dec 19 in Knoxville
[youtu.be]
Shires and husband duet. Isbell plays on most tracks on Take It Like A Man, but I don't believe generally accompanies her onstage on the tour. Two recent exceptions being shows in Knoxville, and in Nashville, their home, in December, when he sat in on 4 or 5 songs in each.

I've kept an eye on vids of some of their performances the past year or so. Looks to me like they've picked up the pace of things... adding more higher energy songs into the mix with the quieter ones. Gotten even more interesting.

If they were in town I'd definitely see them. This show's in DC. We'll see.

Merit, or having a following, or being out there touring your ass off for years and earning your spot, aren't the standards anymore. Bands' chances depend on how many Stones support gigs, if any, Thomas Tull decides to leave for other people this year. Mick apparently will sell him whatever he wants for himself and his hireling Ghost Hounds.

Does Larkin Poe have big money laying around to try to bid against GHs? Probably not. So best of luck to them and to every other deserving young act out there who has earned a boost, needs and deserves a boost, but are going up against a selfish billionaire who wants these stages to feed his own ego.

I just picked up tickets for light up the blues. This is with Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Lukas Nelson and the promise of the real plus more at the Greek Theatre in LA on April 22. The presale code is LIGHT. In light of today’s disappointing news, it feels good to have concert tickets, and something to look forward to.
