Premier make a cheaper kit than normal, but for her first kit buy second hand. That's where the bargains lay. A tape recorder to play back her playing. And trust me on this one. Learn all the rudiments thoroughly. She will feel these are not neccessary. But as she listens to other drummers she will begin to understand their use. And practise at every spare monent. You can practise anywhere. Even on the toilet tapping on the knees.

If your friend is under 5...I'd suggest turning saucepans upside down, and give her those big porridge-spoons as sticks.

My now ex wife always complained about me tapping out a paradiddle on her back. I lost the wife but do a mean paradiddle.

I'm a drummer. Don't buy a new shiny kit from Guitar Center or other music store. You'll get more bang for your buck by buying a used kit. It won't be all nice and shiny but it will sound better. Yamaha makes a good kit, so does Pearl. Cymbals are important and the same thing holds true for them. Personally I like Sabians. Feel free to write me directly if you would like to.

When she has the cash upgrade to Zildjian turkish made cymbals. They don't make bad ones. Looking at the future and more income the ultimate kit is Ludwig. Their Speed King bass pedal is great. Tama make a very robust kit for the heavy hitter. Drum cases are a must to protect the drums in transit. And your investment. Choosing the right sticks is probably personal. Unfortunately in the world of drumming different drummers have different preferences. Marvpeck goes for Sabians. Me Zildjian. Everyone has personal taste. That can also depend on the type of music a drummer plays. Enjoy.
