I think Keith changed guitars pretty often. He might have played a black Les Paul Custom in standard tuning for some shows on that tour, but I've seen lots of different pics of him with different guitars from that tour. Regardless of which guitars he used, here's the tunings he would have used.....(all open G tunings refer to the 5 string version).......

BS- open G
GS- standard (I'm pretty sure he always did this live in standard)
Happy- open G, capoed at 4th
TD- open G, capoed at 4th
Star Star- standard
Mr. D- standard
Heartbreaker- standard
Angie- standard
YCAGWYW- open G, capoed at 5th
MR- standard, capoed at 7th
HTW- open G
ADTL- open G
RTJ- open G, capoed at 4th
JJF- open G, capoed at 4th
SFM- open G, capoed at 4th

.....Keith usually kept the same guitar for the last 3 songs...they did them all in the same key although that wasn't the original key of the studio versions in some cases.....this was probably done so they could charge through the final three songs without having to stop and change guitars and lose momentum.....

Is it possible that he played the Newman-Jones guitar also for the song Honky Tonk Women. I have saw a photo of Mick and Keith, sharing the same microphone and Keith play with the Newman-jones guitar without a capo. I think the photo is from the rotterdam gig

Mathijs -- When you say you've seen "footage" of all those songs except Dancing With Mr Dr, do you mean you've seen video recordings of 'em? Can you tell us from where and what kinds of recordings? I'm very curious about film from the '73 tour ... have barely seen anything. That Old Grey Whistle Test video of Street Fighting Man must be the only one I've found.

There are some super-8 footage of the German 73 shows. The sound is overdubbed...it doesn't match the pictures on the version I've got, but maybe there's better sound->pictures of this footage around.

Essen, Cologne, and Mannheim:

[bootcoverz.com]

The only decent '73 item I am aware of is the Frankfurt SFM, which appeared on the OGWT though I think other shows were professionally recorded. Someone on this board either had seen or knew of Vienna 73 on video, but the owner isn't sharing presumably because he got it from the band.

There's 8 mm video footage quite readilly available in tape trading circles from at least Vienna, Mannheim, Essen, Frankfurt, Cologne, Wembley 9, Brussels 17 first and Munich. Also, for some reason the Dutch photographer Laurens van Houten was granted access to all Rotterdam shows, and there's truly an abundance of pictures from these shows. For most pictures it is not hard to guess the song that is played.

Thanks for the information! I've been searching for '73 DVDs on various torrent sites for years now without any luck. Anyone have any of it at hand?

Is that the TV yellow Gibson double cutaway that Keith is playing on Gimme Shelter? For some reason it looks off.

Looks like it

I know. But doesn't the body look slightly bigger? and it seems like Keith used to have it slung lower. The headstock also different. I'm probably tripping.
Mathijs would know.

I think it's due to the blurry image and thus it looks funny .

I've never bothered looking at that Cologne footage because of the low picture quality, but it's pretty cool if you get into it.

HTW, for example, sounds really groovy – band in top shape – and Keith uses the Ted Newman Jones there.

It's not TV yellow but Cherry.

This Junior turned out to be a 1960 Junior. Used until 1976, and Jagger used it for Crazy Mama at El Mocambo. Then it appears only backstage on the 1978 tour and moved to storage until it appeared at the Exhibtionism.

Is it the same one he played when he sat in with the Faces on "Id rather go blind"?

I feel kind of silly asking these questions because I know Keith's guitars fairly well. It's just that in the Koln footage, it looks bigger than a Junior; (in my eyes..)

Yes, I'm quite sure that's the one he used with the Faces. He played it quite a lot during those years '73–76. Did he use it in Australia '73 for the first time?

I’m straying the subject matter a little, but I wonder if any of their guitars used during the tours of the 1970’s and 80’s are used on stage, today?

A few have still recently been in use, e.g. Micawber and Malcolm (blond Teles - as everyone no doubt knows...), Dice (TV yellow LP Jr,), Sonny (Sunburst Tele), Keith's black '75 Custom Tele, Ronnie's '55 hardtail Strat, his Firebird VII (at least I assume it's the same one) and the Mary Kaye Strat.

First used on Nicaragua Benefit 1973, then extensively on 1973 tours and IORR album. Used on Rambler for most of 1975 and several 1976 shows.

Ronnie's 55 hardtail and Firebird are different guitars than the ones he used in the 1970's.
