ohh thank you ChrisM - that does simplify things! sweet nickname too :E
it has that telltale "stripe" running down between the pickups, right?

Oh Ms Sssoul, the guitar you state as being a mid 60's Goldtop in the caption above is actaully a 1952 model, which was the first year of production.

oh - i mean it's the one Keith had in the mid-60s, not that it's a mid-60s model
but i'll edit that to make it clearer.

Last night I picked up a copy of Guitar Legends which featrues the Rolling Stones and on page 59 there is a full body shot of the Jim Marshall photo! Speak of the devil! From looking at the pic the Les Paul appears to be "Claw" as the distinctive figuring can be seen between the and above the pickups. However I was mistaken when I said that the guitar had only five strings because in this photo the six string is clearly visible. Also the truss rod cover on this guitar appears to be non original as the script "Les Paul Model" can be seen and originals were blank. I wish I hada scanner as I would love to post this pic for all to see. I'd like to find another pic of this guitar that clearly shows the headstock as well. Does anyone have one?

Hope you like this one, ChrisM!

Edited: No "Les Paul Model" written on the truss rod cover, BTW

Ah yes! Thanks very much Bruno! I can't see the Les Paul script here either but in the Guitar Legends photo it is clearly visible and both photos are of the same guitar. I think it must be a trick of the light. Wish like hell I could scan the photo in the mag!

I didn't actually snap these 1972 Chicago Keith pics. I merely "collected" them and placed them at the proper shows. The color shot is Chicago
June 20th 2nd show. The b/w is Chicago June 20th 1st show.

thanks Erik! i'd love to hear why you feel that's San Antonio and not Baton Rouge -
i'm not anywhere as good as you are at id'ing the 70s shows.

WIth Sssoul, it's basically because of Richards' pants, Jagger looked quite the same. I think it's the pink-striped pants in the photo posted above, it's hard to tell from a distance...but I think so. Besides, there's a different guitar strap in the above pic, than the Goldtop pics from Baton Rouge..as seen on page 1 of this thread.

Baton Rouge (don't know who took it, but I don't think it's Bob Gruen)

2 nights in San Antonio (from "musicpictures")

In other words...Keith did for sure use the goldtop in San Antonio, there's pictures from 4 different 75 shows in this thread with that guitar. If we had some more shots from the other Baton Rouge show + Kansas City, we would have 6 shows all together.

The B&W pic in this last series is not a Les Paul though???
Of course I must have seen it in photo many times over, but I had never taken it in consciously, that Keith did play a Les Paul in 75. Obbviously it is the "Rambler". The first Chicago shot with Charlie seeing "double" is also Midnight Rambler. The jam part. Once it slowed down they were both soloing and playing loose. This position is probably them in a huddle plAYing tight; therefore the fats part. Also Jagger still seems to have the belt on.

Hehe, no, it's not. That guitar is covered in a different guitar thread. Just to show that these 3 pics comes from 3 diff concerts...the 1st pic (of the 3) is from the same Baton Rouge show as on page 1 of this thread.

good theory! thanks for the analysis, Erik - i can't see Keith's guitar strap at all, though,
in the Fin Costello shot, so you're doin *way* better than i am. have some popcorn. :E

That's it, actually. While Keith has the same shirt in that Baton Rouge shot, and you can see the black/brown strap...in other words, it's a white strap.
Thanks for the popcorn

Indeed the Chicago 72 pic feature the band playing MR. But I'd say that on both San Antonio 75 pics, where Keith plays the LP Goldtop, they are playing Happy, as as he plays with the slide.

Chelsea was talking about picture number #4 from the bottom, but you are right about those Happy pics.

Thanks erik. Oh yes bruno, "Happy" all the way on those. Slide, Capo in 4th fret, Keith at the mike with Jagger ...all equals one big "Happy".
I like the way we can tell all these things.

Thanks with Sssoul,
well, quite frankly I'm having some doubts concerning which pics comes from Baton Rouge and which comes from San Antonio. What I wrote the other day, might be wrong after all.
The TOTA book only covers Milwaukee onwards,
And the pic here (just a boot-scan)...it looks just like the one listed as San Antonio above, apart from Micks trousers. My guess is that the outfit were almost the same at every 2nd show at those 4 first concerts....In other words 2 outfits for 4 concerts. If somebody has a picture they KNOW the date of, it would be a great help... It's always nice to have the correct dates for the pics

PS: I do not know the date of this pic, don't kill me if it's a 76 pic...just thought it could be June 1st - 4th 75

What would be incredible, is if someone would do with 75 tour what Harlold C did with the 72 tour. I don't know if the TOTA book does that since I don't have one.

ohh it's hard to tell it's hard to tell ...
ahem, i mean! i don't know: i reckon they may have changed their stage clothes for the four shows we're brooding over -
or not, of course. so: yeah, it would be great if anyone has photos that they know for sure are from any of these shows.

meanwhile: what would they be playing in that shot i posted?

and now ... thanks to the gallant Spud's elegant scanning job,
i will attempt to post the article from the september 2007 Guitarist magazine
about that historic 59 LP sunburst that was once Keith's and then Mick T's.

sorry about the chunk missing from the middle of the portrait;
i spliced it as well as i could.

interesting that they have a totally different version
of the history of this guitar than "we" have, innit -
someone should write to the editors and invite them
to have a look at the Ratbag Boogie :E
