Talking about the guitar players not the bands........

Besides, Floyd, to my tastes, is a little morose.
Yes is not the type of music that gets you up tapping your feet, though
if you are high as a kite, it is tough to beat.

That said, Close To The Edge and Animals are really, really great.

But EVH is, for me among the greatest of of players ever--that was my orginal point. (I do tend to get easily distracted...lol)

Well, it's pretty simple. Judging a guitarist by emotional conveying alone requires subjectivity of the listener as well. To compile a list of who makes who feel what would be endless. Of course he conveys emotion to many people - most professional musicians do - to someone.

Being a fan and adoring a certain performer is without a doubt going to give the player miles & miles of a head start this way. You already love Keith, and ache for anynoise he makes before he even strums a chord.

But guitar playing is also a skill, and, like it or not, a measurable one, despite how the THOUGHT of subjective judging clashes with the pure enjoyment of the show or listenening experience.

I'm glad you feel that way. Liek I said, you're experiences tell you this, and they're not wrong at all. But again, as I've stated, playing music is a skill with many multiple layers of advancement. Being a musician gives you a unique perspective on, well, what other musicians are doing.

For me, I see Keith Richard's playing as riff-based, heavily Berry-infulenced, 'sort of 'locked in there. He's a first-rate songwriter first, for me (that's a whole other ball o'wax). Writing a universally recognizalbe, great rock riff is a talent that Keith is blessed with.

Does anyone (else) like Eric Johnson? I don't know if he'd be called strictly rock...

Angus Young also has a place amongst the greatest!
