Has Neil ever joined them in the studio or on tour?

The closest was probably in the 70's when Neil briefly fronted the New Barbarians. This quickly fell apart BUT would have been a great rock footnote. Neil was in a band with Rick James in the mid 60's called the Mynah Birds though. "Borrowed Tune" off Tonights the Night is basically Lady Jane though uncredited.

Neil and Keith played together at the Rock & Roll hall of fame induction ceremony in 1992.

Yes, it is. I forgot about that. Neeeeyall also got his idea for the Trans tour after seeing one of the Stones' "Tattoo You" shows.

The riff in Neil's "Mr. Soul" sure sounds a lot like the riff in "Satisfaction."

A riff...it's a recognizeable piece of a song, usually played with guitars. I don't know if one refers to a piano-segment as a "riff", though. Maybe is has to be guitars.

Never heard of Neil fronting the New Barbarians either. There was something in the Knebworth 1979 programme about not expecting him to turn up though.

Neil Young was around during the New Barbarians' formative days and is the one who came up with that name for the band,
and did consider playing with them, but fronting them? i don't think so.
the band existed to promote Gimmie Some Neck, and it was very much Ronnie's role to front it.

repetition is essential to making a riff a riff.
a lick can be real recognizable, but unless it repeats it's not a riff:
