thing is, Frank, the idea of someone like Streisand being defined as 'far left' would be pretty laughable to anyone outside the US.

It's a fair enough question to ask, isn't it? I don't get all the citisism this thread gets. It's different, Stones related and a laugh. As Camper88 writes, politics are international, and particularly US politics at that, I'd like to add.
I am sure Mick sympathises with one or the other. It's about sympathising, not voting for or beeing a member of, since he's yes, a Brit. My guess is that he leans toward the Democrats. Neo Con, and didn't he support the Carter campagn in 1976? Lots of thing could have changed since then, of course. Never the less, most Europeans stands closer to the views of the Democrats than the Republicans, which is mainly a south/mid west party, as far as I am concerned, and that's where you'll find Americans least similar to most Europeans. And Europe is more lefty than the US in general.

Not really.

That was a very humorous moment in "Being Mick" and Mick was clearly responding in tongue-in-cheek fashion by saying he voted for a very left-wing party.

I don't care how he votes. My guess is he's like a lot of us: conservative on some things, liberal on others.

Gazza, there is a HUGE philosophical/idealogical gulf between Democrats and Republicans here in the USA and although it doesnt matter in theory WHO is elected in our country ( to the rest of the world) when a total fool like Bush is elected it DOES impact the world. It has unfortunately impacted Tony Blair's career as well. I feel sorry for Tony Blair because he was more or less forced to support Bush's plans because of our aliance with England. As for Micks leaning one way or the other, I would say he certasinly would vote Democratic because he is a caring, sensitive, enlightened human being! He does not avoid the masses because of snobbery but more for safety reasons! He is also environmentally conscious, does alot of reading about on a variety of subjects and has definite opinions as expressed briefly in SWEET NEOCON. His wealth may make him seek tax shelters and tax breaks, and THAT is CERTAINLY REPUBLICAN but if I had his kind of $$ I would want to keep some and not piss it away on taxes. That was the reason the Stones became tax exiles in the 70's( I know, you all know that!) At that point, they were not nearly as rich as they are today and when their Mother land was taking 70% of their earnings, it was very bleak! I would hae sought " shelter" in another country too!

And I think that was the point of the threads emphasizing that he was British. Of course, whether a person is on the left or right has nothing to do with nationality. But Republican with a capital R and Democrat with a capital D are to do with specifically American parties, The question as phrased is as ridiculous as asking whether Bruce Springsteen votes Labour, Conservative or Liberal - which is not the dirty word it is in America. Even left and right mean something different outside the US. My reaction to reading that BStreisand is regarded as a far left radical was exactly as Gazza said - i.e., I laughed pretty hard.

compared to the differences in other countries, its relatively minimal. Thats my point

You'd never see a socialist or Marxist politician or party in power in the US. Thats what most people's definition of 'far left' would be. In most countries, the Democrats wouldnt even be described as 'left wing'.

Babs isnt exactly Che Guevara, lets face it.

...you'd have a Libertarian, Carnaby, which is probably the closest thing to Mick's actual beliefs. However, as to the question in this thread...didn't Highwire and Sweet Neo Con give us a few clues to his leanings?

If anything, I would argue that his refusal to play either of them in concert gives an even bigger clue to his real leanings. He doesnt really want to piss too many people off as it might lead to lost revenue and hurt his wallet.

Funny nobody mentioned the song "Sweet neo con" or Highwire, whose lyrics have obviously written by Mick. They both show what type of Republican Mick is...

Lemme see, The Stones played for Bill Clinton's 60th birthday, Mick has written High Wire (criticising Gulf War 1) and Sweet Neocon (criticising Bush and referencing Gulf War 2) ... I think it's fairly certain that he ain't a Republican.

Mick wants everyone to have infinite personal freedoms, but doesn't want to pay for them if they screw up or are lazy. A bit spoiled and hypocritical view if you ask me. All benefits with no costs or accountibilities. It simply isn't the way life works unless you are a rock star.

Mick Jagger once said about British politics that his background said he should vote Labour, his bank balance said he should vote Conservative and common sense said he should vote Liberal Democrat. Personall I think MJ na dall other Brits should get a vote in the US elections - after all the US does determine our foreign policy!!!
