Vow, I remember hearing the 7" single version on the radio just before the release ! I was very enthusiastic about it! Being a little short of money (at that time, too), I did not buy the single, but decided to wait for the album to be released some short time after. Then my first impression was a little disappointment, comparatively speaking, at the album track. It seemed somewhat different than the first impression vaguely left on my memory. At the time, I thought that it all had to do with my excitement on first hearing it (so strange,in fact, as Stones tracks almost always grow on me). During the space of time, I rapidly learned to love the album track. But, deep down inside, I always missed what I had experienced during those one or two early radiohearings. What I thought could have been different, I did not know, thinking back. Remember, I did not know there to be different studio versions. My vague impression from one or two hearings was all the same that, what I had heard on the radio, had been marked by another sound of music instruments. That is, possibly had another arrangement, instrument mix or something like that. That is all I can (try to) say. However,it may be schillid who is nearer to what is the correct statement. Thank you, schillid, for the reminder! - This case has a similarity in another issue: The album track I got hold of, buying compilations later on, I will say is somewhat different from the original 7" version of "Paint It, Black" that I bought around the time of the release of the single. I am not at all good at describing music, so I will have to leave an alleged difference to be more " room and air" about the music during some parts of the track.
Then many years later, I read that there had, in fact or allegedly, been two studio versions, one 7" single version and one album version of "Street Fighting Man". Due to various reasons I have never been active enough to acquire the 7" single version. I can't say much distinct about how it was ( and is), only myself verify that it possibly exists as a different entity.
My wonder is in what form this version is available today (to a vinyl listener). Once I hopefully bought an EP, I think it was, that featured a track "SFM". Appearing only to be the album version, to my disappointment.
