Play-back with live vocals. It was aired back then. 6 songs (non-playback) available on DVD these days, 3 of them are instrumentals/jams.

There is also a good version of Tumbling Dice on from the same performance.

are you sure this is playback with live vocals? live drums too? how do you fake hitting the drums? anyway....these 2 clips are truly excellent!!

I know this was German tv but...i've always loved the idea of recording albums live in the studio instead of piecing together bits & pieces and singing from an isolated booth etc....better groove. isn't that the way everyone did it back in the day?

Only Loving Cup is playback, the rest are for real.

right, the Montreux rehearsals filmed for the Old Grey Whistle Test -
beautiful!

>> how do you fake hitting the drums? <<

as the good Erik said, most of the Montreux stuff is *not* mimed, but i like this question anyway. :E
i believe the answer is that you don't fake playing - it's just that what you're playing then & there
is not what's being transmitted to the audience. the tape is what's being transmitted.
i suppose there may be different ways of approaching it, though.

Hrrm...it took 16 posts before someone mentioned that it was the Montreux Rehearsal stuff (which I thought was the most common name of it). Thanx anyway.
