Not seeing a lot of 5 stringers here, at least in the most recent pages. Here's my #1 five string. It's a custom made 1985 Jackson, made by the original team in San Dimas, CA. A bunch of my guitars were stolen and I took all the insurance money and had this guy built to rock 30 years ago. Seymour Duncans and split coils for both pickups, so I get the fat humbucker sound and the thinner telecaster sound too.

I've got some other nice guitars, but when I want to break out Brown Sugar or HTW, this is the one! While it doesn't have the traditional Fender/Gibson look, it's definitely got a great sound.

I play a guitar with 5 choruses of stings, 2 per chorus. It's called a cuatro and it is an amazing instrument. Mine was made in Puerto Rico. Super thick strong neck which allows me to tune it to open B. Here is a picture of one (not mine):



I encourage all you 5 string open tuning players to check one out if you get a chance.

Very cool idea. With 3 of the 6 stings tuned to G, I imagine that would fatten it up a bit. I never take that low string off when I play in open G and have learned to exploit the low 5th (D) that that lowest string provides. There is another form of open G that Lowell George used with slide which I think tunes the high E string to G.

+1. The important thing is setting aside some time to actually go to a bunch of guitar shops, play as many as you can and pick out the one that speaks to you. Try and go shopping without preconceptions and be prepared to be surprised. It's much more fun than buying online, you get the chance to form a bond with a particular guitar, and you're supporting traditional guitar retail too.

When you are looking at specific guitars is most resonant when guitar is unplugged? Ie - loudest, feel lots of vibrations when you strum all over the guitar.

That being said the Japanese versions of guitars are SUPERB. Especially 80s and 90s. you will need to check the specific ones are made in Japan but burny (fernandes), edwards, greco and tokai are all worth looking into.

Yup I have 1986 Japanese Fender Tele which is a acopy of the rare "Custom" US model from 1962-63 and it's superb!

Here`s one of mine : a Fender Tele in Lake Placid blue it's superb too , but it`s not a japanese edition though .

I was hanging out at our rehearsal unit earlier today. I want to run two amps, so I was trying out these 3 tonight. A Vox ac15, TopHat Club Royale and the Fender '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb. All of them are fairly close in wattage. 15, 20 and 22 respectively.

So far I'm leaning towards the Deluxe Reverb and Club Royale. With these two amps I'll have the big 3 covered. The Club Royale can do Vox and some Marshall tones.




It's been a little over a week since I've gotten my Deluxe Reverb and Les Paul Jr. I'm still diggin' them both.

The '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb is almost like having 2 amps in 1. The Vintage side is close to a '68 DR. The Custom side has a Bassman Tone Stack. Kind of making it close to a Tweed Bassman.

What's cool is the reverb and tremolo can be used on both channels. They sound good too. My only gripe is the tremolo doesn't go as slow as I would like. I have pedals that take care of that though. The DR takes pedals fantastically.

Fender removed the negative feedback, so the DR tends to break up a little sooner. I think the sweet spot on this amp is 6 to 7 on the Custom channel and 7 to 8 on the Vintage Channel.


My new love is the LP jr. It's a 2015 model which has some changes that many don't seem to like. One change is that the fretboard is wider. I like this as it makes bending the high and low e a little easier. The second this is the G-Force tuner Gibson is sticking on their guitars. Basically turn it on. Select what tuning and strum. It's fairly accurate. For a little more accuracy you can pluck a string at a time. What some don't seem to understand is that you can still tune the guitar manually. You just have to have the G-Force turned off.

I'll probably take the G-Force tuner off and put on regular tuners.

Completely agree. As long as the neck is decent and you can set it up, some of my favorite guitars have been $100 flea market jobs- let the guitar speak to you.

A used Gretsch G5420T, in orange, has popped up for sale. Comes with a hardshell case. Haven't seen it yet, but I'm betting it's in very good condition. It's priced at $550, which I know the shop will knock it down for me.

I have a G5422TDC (the red one in this blurry pic) which I'm very happy with. A friend of mine has a G5420T, which plays a bit easier, but I think mine sounds a bit better.

Do you like the blacktop Filtertrons? Some quick research shows that some think they're a little thin, but overall they have the Gretsch sound.

I think they're great. Check out our take on Down In The Hole. The two rhythm guitars are the Gretsch (and a Hiwatt amp).
