I have to agree with this. He is serviceable at best. Brian, Mick, then: Rod Stewart's drinking buddy. Although, I think he did his best work with Rod. His best with the Stones was on Some Girls. He has always only been, again, serviceable live. Notice how people get all worked up just because he DIDN'T screw up a lead? Pathetic. Oh well, we're near the end anyway.

The nastiest, raunchiest guitar I've ever heard - EVER - is courtesy of young Ronwell in "Miss Judy's Farm".

The guy's an incredible talent and doesn't deserve 1/10th of the sh!t he's got over the years.

Those kind of pointless secrets don't figure with me. I was no Ronnie fan till lately but I've been converted by the proof I've been hearing from him too many times now for it to be a fluke.

It's not really that I'm anti-Ronnie but I think someone else could have helped take this band to even greater heights, that's all really.

Do you think they're complaining about the lowly heights they've reached, then?!

Ronnie Wood made my Licks theatreshow twice as great as it already was. I love the guy for being a great character AND a great guitarplayer, and I hope he'll get over the nasty part of his acoholism. A non-drinker he will probably never be, and that's too much to ask from anyone in the scene. Ronnie, in reasonable state of soberness, is a wonderful guitarplayer.
He's no megalomaniac, and he's still in the band. Even more: he has been the glue in the band for quite some time. That is something that cannot be said of their earlier lead guitarists.
I do not see any other lead guitarist in the band... there used to be another I've heared about, nealry 35 years ago... who cares.

Look,I'm as big a fan of Mick Taylor as the second man,but Ronnie gave the Stones a much needed kick in the ass,,besides Taylor left on his own accord.

I'll take Ronnie over Mick Taylor any day. If Taylor had stayed with the Rolling Stones he would have ruined them. They would be long gone. Ron Wood brought them out of the Sixties and into the Seventies and beyond. The Stones would have gone the way of Lynard Skynard, Foghat and the Allman Brothers. He saved them both visually and musically.

The Rolling Stones just wouldn't be the Rolling Stones without Ronnie on record and on stage. He is an integral part of the whole Rolling Stones SOUND and LOOK.

What song does the average person know by the Stones? "Start Me Up."

disagree with you, and say 'Satisfaction'.

Ok, I'll chime in. Ronnie has been one of my favorites since his days with the Faces. His guitar style was percussive, lyrical, melodic, spirited and vicious, sometimes all in the same song. Some may recall that I was less than kind in my reviews of his playing at gigs in recent years but that was becasue I knew he was much better than his playing indicated. When you set a standard of greatness such as Ronnie has and then fail to live up to it will illicite commment, not of spite but out of dissapointment and a knowing that he is capable of much more. I'm glad to hear that his playing has picked up of late. I hope he'll continue to play to the standard he is capable of and that few have achieved.

on what goes into Ronnie's distinctive style - what makes his playing so recognizably Ronnie -
i would love that, especially if you feel like pointing us toward particular tracks to illustrate.

I think Handsome girls was recorded in Menphis Tenesee...Detroit is on boot lp title(a aban doned in detroit) wich is a different show...hail ronnie!

And can't be bothered to argue about the merits of who's solo's are the best cause for me that not what Rock N Roll is all about.

And I'm NOT saying, remove Ronnie!!! include him!! He & Taylor could probably
cook up some nice interplay right about now on some of the old songs!!

Yeah he did quit and it look's like Ronnie was the best guy to step-in in 1975,
but it's 2006 now, Taylor's still around and can still play like no other guitarist the Stones have in camp, Taylor's want's to sit-in, at least for one
gig - why not???

Its just that there's a certain brigade who have a blinkered obsession for MT and harp on and on about his greatness v RW whilst even forgeting BJ???

I understand. I just don't get the Wood apologists' obsession, either. YES, you can get sober in this business. Ask, for instance, EC.... Getting sober would definitely improve his playing. He's not a bad player at all when he gets his head out of his ass.

Bigbang, the first name that appeared on this thread, besides that of mr Wood, was that of Mr. Taylor. By one of the Taylor-era-fans, the one with the difficult name MTDDTLC. Is that enough to close this discussion and dedicate further posts on this thread to the positive side of Ronnie? Soon enough there will be another post aiming at comparison or even Woodgravedigging. ;-)

Well I have a few personal favorites Ms Sssoul. I loved all the bass tracks on the the first Jeff Beck Group album. Ronnie's playing was very melodic and soulful and reminded me of James Jamerson, the Motwon session bassist. As to his guitar stuff where do I begin? My favorite Faces track is "Had Me Real Good Time" The opening syncopated riff kills me everytime and his phrasing is immpecable. It's very hard for me to emmualte but he makes it sound easy. A stand out track with Rod was their cover of "Twisitng the Night Away" His slide guitar playing is some of the most vicous, crude and at the same time souful playing in that genre I have heard. On acoustic guitar he plays alot of 12 string and I love his chordal phrasing on "Sweet Lady Mary" as well as his electric guitar on that song. When he plays, especially with the Faces, he at times does not let the notes ring out and sustain too much, giving his sound a precussive feel that I mentioned earlier. A stand out Stones track that exemplifies this and is praised by many is "Beast of Burden" I could go on but duty calls...

of all of Mr.Wood's achievements.......i'd put him in my personal hall of fame for the intro to "Stay With Me".....pure guitar brilliance
